Mine are all rather stunted this year, but I also probably haven't been giving them enough attention, since we have a new born. It's also their second year in the ground, and they haven't been doing as well since I transferred from pots. Still need to get my soil built up a bit more, but one day I will have a windfall of hops.

It is with a heavy heart that I am here to post that even the heartiest bines are no match for golfball to tennis ball sized hail. I lost my entire garden, half the siding on my house, and my roof along with some body panels on my wifes car. while all that crap can be replaced, my hop loss hit my heart the hardest.

Chinook and centennial. I may get some chinook still, but the centennials are stripped bare and the bines are broken in multiple spots...

Wow, that had to be noisy. House and cars have insurance, gardens and hops not.

My second year bines have been going gangbusters since they emerged late February/early March. I didn't thin them, did nothing to discourage them and the bines that ran at an angle from the top of the mini-arbor to my bedroom window on the second floor are getting to the point where they might soon be ready. Looks like I'll get to cut them and then do a second set of runners for the ones that are coming up behind.
Good luck and great weather have made all the difference.
The third year set at my fiancee's place don't have flowers near the size of the Y2s.
My first year mail order crop are getting going finally but none are looking like serious producers. All I really wanted from them was a good root development year anyway so they're ready for permanent transplant next year.
My luck growing anything is traditionally horrible so I find hops to be rewarding and encouraging

Hops are like weeds anyway, they take over everything. With a little guidance they really shine. I think I will be investing in hail nets next year.

Both of my hops (cascade and chinook) are crazy big this year. I will likely get pounds of hops from each, no doubt about that!

Only thing that sucks is I forgot which side is which... Any good way to figure out which hop variety is what when they product the cones/flowers?

Put a couple in your pint glass...the Chinooks will be easy to differentiate:slight_smile:

This has been a weird hop year here...all fruit trees are producing bumper crops, but hops were besieged by aphids. Aphids have finally subsided, but only a few bines came through unscathed...all (with the exception of CTZs:slight_frown:) are enjoying a second growth spurt...unusual for this time of year

Cascade looks like a tight little artichoke while chinook looks like a wizards beard... if that makes any sense.

My hops came up very late this year, as did all my plants. My fruit trees blossomed a month late, and my cacti even flowered 1.5 months later than normal. I usually have my first harvest of Cascade by mid May but this year my tallest bine was barely 3' tall by then. But on the bright side I was gone for a month and all my hops survived thanks to my drip system actually working, even with a week of 115F+ temps . I missed the first batch of cones, they were dry when we got back but the second round is about to start.

My Hersbrucker got burned or something, they stopped growing and haven't been putting out new growth down on the ground. Everything else looks really good. Need to water the backyard hops tonight since it has been awhile since the last watering. Need to look for burrs as they should be coming on soon. My buddy strung his up earlier than mine this year and already has cones on some of his plants.

Haven't had the aphid issue, but I have to agree about the fruit - this is the first year that my plum tree has produced fruit large and sweet enough to eat.

Cascades have made it to the top, climbed across the entire perpendicular rope, and are starting to flower. In hindsight, I should have just planted 4 Cascade, they grow much better than the others up here.

My wife just text this to me. My Chinook (oldest and biggest plant) dropped over the past 2 days. Guess my string couldn't take the weight of it, snapped at the eye hook. hoping I can get that bad boy back up tonight.
