This Friday, July 8th when our tasting room opens at 4pm, we’ll be releasing 2016 Montmorency vs. Balaton — our barrel aged sour beer refermented with cherries!

We’re going to try something new with this release. In an effort to try to cut down on the size of the initial push for bottles, and to give people who can’t make it to Jester King on Friday or Saturday a chance, we’re spreading the release across at least three days. We’ll have the following quantities of bottles and draught available on the upcoming weekend days:

    Friday, July 8th — 1,000 bottles & four 50L kegs

    Saturday, July 9th — 2,500 bottles & six 50L kegs

Sunday, July 10th — 1,000 bottles & two 50L kegs, plus any leftover bottles and/or draught

As you can see from the numbers above, we have a total of 4,500 bottles and twelve 50L kegs of 2016 Montmorency vs. Balaton. The bottle limit is two per customer per day. Bottles are $20 (500ml). Aside from special events, 2016 Montmorency vs. Balaton will not be available outside our tasting room.

We hope this plan gives people a little more flexibility in terms of getting bottles and/or draught. We’ll see how it goes. We’re not tied to this experiment and aren’t claiming it to be the new normal. We hope you enjoy our 2016 batch. We’re really pleased with how it turned out!

I love this plan. I'm hoping it makes for a more enjoyable and Friday and Saturday. I'll be heading down on the way to a family reunion on Friday. Will it last until 6 PM when I can be there? Doubtful, but at least I have a chance to swing by Sunday on my way back to DFW.

I think you'll be ok 6, my personal opinion, but don't shoot me if I'm wrong, lol.

I normally show up around 8:30 or so on Friday nights after the drive in from Houston and don't have a problem getting bottles, but since they're making this change, I'll be there when they open.

Pretty cool plan IMO, be curious to see how it works out. Also like the fact that they're willing to try something new so more people can possibly benefit.

I agree that its very cool they're trying to spread the love... I'm just curious how many people will be standing in line three days in a row - cause you know there will be a few

IMHO, this ruins Jester King releases for me as a whole. I have always LOVED that when JK has a release, if you go, you get bottles. No lottery, no presale; if you show up you get a bottle.

If i were to leave Dallas after work Friday, I fear that I would not get there before they sold out Fridays allotment(seeing as OP sold 2000 bottles the first day). Friday for me was always the day for releases. Saturday will be a sh*t show, with a line forming at 8am, and i have no patience for that, especially seeing as this early line could easily cap out sales before noon. This leads to something worse however

Most importantly, this will not stop people from going. This policy will in no way deter others from showing up in hoards, and will ultimately result in many unhappy customers being turned away when they sell out that days allotment.

As someone who loves the work this brewery does, this sadly puts me in a position were i will no longer be willing to attend major releases such as MvB

Yep, very dumb idea. It will make the chance of more people getting bottles less likely. I think most locals go Friday as well so this hurts the locals who actually support Jester King every weekend. One of the worst ideas I've ever witnessed but I've given up on Jester King a couple of months ago. They are slowly ostracizing more of the local support in my opinion.

I too will miss waltzing in at 8 pm on a Friday after a commute and getting bottles. So now I'll get there earlier in the day to make sure I don't strike out after incurring the expenses involved with traveling in. End result will be the same; people like me with flexible schedules will still get our bottles, people without flexible schedules will strike out in greater numbers if they aren't there before the day's limit has been run through.

If the goal was "to cut down on the size of the initial push for bottles", it's only created three initial pushes for bottles for each day of the weekend. And these initial pushes will be greater knowing there are only 1000 bottles available on a Friday/Sunday, or 2500 on Saturdays (to a lesser extent).

I like the new format. It will be nice to know you can have at least three opportunities to go up to get bottles as opposed to likely only 2. I think this is probably in response to O&P selling out much quicker than expected, but this and Atrial have much larger bottle counts. I don't see any way that many people are going to line up before opening to make it sell out the way gin nocturn or O&P day 2 did.

If this beer was limit 12 and given away for free across multiple weekends, people would still complain.

I've yet to go to a fruited release but was hoping to do so this summer. I'm all for the brewery doing whatever they think is best because no system is perfect. Personally I think this makes me less likely to go though. As an out of towner the idea that I pretty much knew if I showed up sometime on Friday I would be guaranteed to get a bottle was very appealing. Now there is definite uncertainty because I can't just leave my job early to drive over in time to for sure get a bottle on Friday and who knows what time you will need to line up on Saturday or Sunday to get a bottle. I'm not saying that I won't wait in line for a beer, but waiting in line and then not getting any is a for sure deal breaker for me in terms of anything not just beer. Would be very easy for a brewery to send someone with tickets to hand out as folks lined up. That way at least if you show up and don't make the cut you know you can cut your losses.

I actually tend to feel that this favors hoarders with flexible schedules rather than locals or the masses but perhaps I will be proven wrong.

No kidding. I love when I get a JK email; it means I get to come to BA and watch the babies pee their pants no matter what.

HEB has no limit on Enfamil, guys.

This is so true. I am entitled to my 2 cases as a local! How dare anyone else have the chance to get my allotment. Good to see JK always trying to better the experience for the patron. Happy to see this higher bottle count too.

Basically this gives traders / hoarders a chance to get bottles on three different times legitimately. They'll still line up early each day in order to get their bottles with their mules in tow. 1000 bottles at 2 pp may sound like it quite a bit, but it really isn't considering the popularity of their sour program. Add in the extra lead time of announcing the release on a Tuesday, it'll probably be pretty crazy.

    We'll see. Believe me, I hope you're right and it isn't.

Ill go ahead and be an arm chair owner. I still dig silent releases so the MAJORITY of people have something to bitch about equally which means they have nothing to bitch about at all, right ? It will give LOCALS a SLIGHT advantage but I don't see anything wrong with that.
