I was wondering how limited of a release this is? I was hoping to trade for some and was just looking for an idea of what I'd need to offer. Thanks.

It's limited in the sense that it only comes out once a year (this year was April) and you can only find it in South Carolina as far as I know. If you're in South Carolina around the time when it comes out, you can get it. I wouldn't consider it a "whale" by any means, but you can't trade for it now as it's come and gone. Next year when it comes out, I'd be happy to set up a trade with you. If not me, keep an eye on these forums or directly on the COAST Brewery or Charleston Beer Exchange websites to find out when it's out and you can set up a trade with someone else.

It is not once a year, it is a when they decide to make it beer. A new batch just came out and is available at the brewery for the tour today.

Whoops, my bad. I should've known that it was one of those - I think I remember it getting released again sometime in the summer. Thanks for clarifying.

This is the third release this year.

In Columbia it's kinda tough to get. One store got a keg for growler fills and it sold out in like a hour. It seems to be easier in Charleston but still isn't just a walk in and pick it up anytime you want kind of thing.

I would think something a little rarer than standard off the shelf stuff would get it done. A similiar good limited seasonal or something along those lines. I have traded a lot of it. I have gotten things like Pliney, Heady Topper, Zombie dust, Half Acre Double daisy cutter, etc.

    Hope that helps.

As others have said its available multiple times per year. However, I think (and I may be wrong) that there is one "big" release, in which they produce enough to distribute to various places in SC, and the other releases are small batch brewery only sales. At least it seems like this current release is a small sample brewery only. That was the impression I got today when I was at COAST.

Yeah, kinda sounds like the case. Thanks for all the help!

Now that they do bottles of it, it is much easier to get. A growler fill of BK used to pull pretty good trades back in the day.

Every release so far they've sent at least 1 keg up to Columbia for growler fills.

I've already got some Boy King bottles acquired but I'm looking for somewhere to fill a growler. I'll be there in 2 weeks and I'm staying on Folly. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I would suggest you check back right before you are here in Charleston, as I doubt places that have it available for growler fill now will still have it in two weeks. But other, different places may have it then.

The CBX did a Rare Beer Tuesday with Boy King this past week. They have it on tap at Closed for Business as of Wednesday night and you can get a grower there for $30 I think. It is available around town on draft (Poe's Tavern, EVO and Closed for Business and possibly others).

Hopefully Smokey Oak won't hold on to a keg for three months like that did last year and finally put it on tap; turned into a gross malt-bomb that was not what they originally intended.

    Hope that helps.
