I walk directly past Poor House every time I go to any of the bars/breweries along the 30th St corridor and the one time I stopped in was enough for me. I know they have their fans but you will never find them among my recommended list for the neighborhood.

Agreed! At the risk of this turning into a total referendum on Mike Hess Brewing, does anyone have any insight into why it's so mediocre? It is consistently disappointing. I thought for sure they would have improved by now, or had at least one hit beer.

Thanks to all! I definitely plan on walking down the 30th st. corridor one evening. More for tasters/flights than anything. If I can't make it all in one night, I could split it up to 2 nights with the 3rd in OB. I likely won't have a chance to be back soon, so I would like to try to hit as many joints as possible for flights and move along...Is 30th st. a decent area after dark?

Yes. You might have a bum hit you up for change or something but that's about it. Exercise the same amount of caution you would walking around any other average urban area after dark and you won't have any problems.

Speaking of Alesmith, do they usually have something barrel aged on?

In the anvil and stave room there are roughly 8-12 BA offerings daily.

Edit: And the 2015 bass i had last week was like a bourbon covered dark chocolate ball. So tasty.

8-12?? That's a lot. Maybe multiple years of the same beer?

We head out for SD Sunday for 5 days with no kids. Can't wait.

They have an updated taplist on their website for both the main bar and the Anvil & Stave room.

Yeah, I haven't been in there yet, but it appears they are still putting up a password for Anvil and Stave on Instagram pretty regularly.

I was told that the password is really only for busy times and the weekend. And for those that don't use any form of social media it, the password is in a small picture frame on the shelf behind the register in the bottle shop/gift shop anyways.

It's their attempt at emulating a speakeasy. Therefore...password to get in. Posted on their FB/Twitter/Instagram/on the shelf behind the register in the gift shop area/sky written overhead/sent via carrier pigeon/sent via fox/etc...

I agree, with the marine base so close I don't think a single carrier pigeon has made it to its destination....and yet, they keep trying.

Also the prohibition era decor is very comforting in that room.

Is Anvil & Stave kid friendly? I know Alesmith is. Thank you!

Thanks to all who offered input. It looks like 30th st. has too much to offer for just one night, so I plan to hit up the southern end: Thorn St walking up to Toronado on one evening, and starting at Fall Brewing headed south towards Rip Current on the other.

Ocean Beach will likely be my other excursion with Stone Liberty Station, Pizza Port, and Newport Ale House.

If you're starting at Thorn St, consider Grand Ole BBQ Y Asado for dinner that night. Great spot with a BYOB policy, but the food is worth it even if you don't bring any food in.

Aside from that, damn good plan.
