Making the trip to Savannah from NYC at the end of this month. Would greatly appreciate any help in bottle shops, food spots and breweries I should check out on the way down or back up. Stopping in Richmond, Charleston and Virginia Beach. Also planning on stopping somewhere off of 95 in North Carolina, just not sure where. Thanks in advance!

I would usually recommend a few days in Asheville, and although that seems to be out of your way, I think it would definitely be worth it to you. I don't know anything about the beer scene in Fayetteville, but I'm sure a stop in Charleston would be worth the trip. As for Savannah, check out Coastal Empire brewing when you get there.

You're going to have to get a little off 95 for the most part. If your intent is just to hit a NC brewery / taproom then Double Barley isn't a terrible option... it also happens to be closest to 95 on 70 and serves decent food. They have some odd hours though. They don't open until 3-4 in the afternoon on weekdays and are completely closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. It's on my "visit 4-5 times a year list".

I'd recommend meandering west to Raleigh and further to Durham if you want options, but it'll take more time. Maybe consider coming back south by way of 85 and 77? Would open up lots more brewey opportunities in NC (Triangle and Charlotte)

Charleston will be worth it for sure!

Thanks guys! I'll take a look at all of these. The only real reason for Virginia Beach is the wife wanted to end it at a beach and we have family in Maryland too so not totally out of the way to go say hi to them.

I have been through Savannah about 4 times in the last year and I used the recommendations contained. Feel free to check out my place reviews, if you are interested.

Charleston isn't exactly close to 95 though.

@Gerry129, while in Savannah stop in to see Coastal Empire and Service brewing. My favorite bottle shop in Savannah is Hops & Barley, the owner is a really awesome dude and he's always willing to let you sample beer he's got on draft. I've also done shares at his shop and gotten to know some other great beer dudes. Just down the street are two of my favorite beer bars. My personal favorite is The Distillery which has a great tap selection and great food. A close second is Crystal Beer Parlor, honestly you can't go wrong with either choice.

The only considerations you'll face when visiting a brewery in Savannah is the nonsense associated with Georgia's alcohol laws. Georgia has a very strict 3 tiered system and the "beer tour" law that was put in place to help small breweries has faced a lot of stiff opposition from distributors and the state's alcohol commission.

No it's not. But if you actually read the OP.
He said he's stopping in Charleston.
