OK So I just bottled my first batch (pumpkin chocolate porter), that a number of you have helped me with along the way. I got 8 22oz's and and 40 12oz and a few glasses for myself to drink (even though its flat) :grinning:

Its so smooth even without carbonation its one of the better tasting beers I have had. I hope the flavors come together nicely has it sits around for a while longer.

My wife is a saint I have to admit, right now my kitchen looks like a beer crime scene, I got beer all over the place! spilt some, knocked a few over before capping, bottle bucket was on floor early one with sanitizer in it and I must have bumped the damn valve-did not notice it until about three gallons were all over the floor. Pretty much every towel we one is laying on the floor. She did not complain once or ask me to move future projects outside, even though another batch is already in the primary, she and even hung around to help with bottling!

Long story short... just wanted to offer a thanks to everyone for the new questions along the way its been appreciated.

The effect $15 worth of flowers has on a woman is baffling. It's like coming home and your wife pulled some Loons from behind her back.

I've had things like this happen to me, too: the g/f freaking over the mess in the kitchen I had just conjured.
First, think of this as lessons learned, what not to do, and how to plan what you are going to do, what "movements" you want to make while brewing/bottling in order to avoid the same mistakes.

As well as bottling messes, I've had major boilover messes that took me hours to clean up. (In fact, the paint on the walls were so stained with wort I had to repaint eventually.) But I cleaned the kitchen to a spotless condition, much cleaner than before brew day. This point is another you should mention, "but honey, the kitchen is now cleaner than ever!"

Second, not only will flowers etc help, but when she tastes the beer and loves the flavor, she will understand (hopefully) that a some spillage is a small price to pay to drink this beer. While she's tasting/sipping on your beer, it's a good time to have a laugh over the trials and tribulations required to get to the point you're at now, and to tell her how you have planned NOT to allow this same mistake again; otherwise, she may never allow you to brew in the kitchen again.

Time to think about kegging. There really is no analog to 'bottling day' when you're doing kegs. Racking to secondary is pretty much the last step.

And congratulations on finding a saint. They're really not that common. Don't skimp on the flowers.

I used to envision something else when asked what the guy-equivalent of flowers was. I'll be re-thinking that.

I think there are a lot of guys out there who need to subscribe to your newsletter

OP: I am not sure exactly how you did it, but I always fill, cap, then fill the next one. That way there's no chance to spill a filled bottle. Get a bottling wand if you don't already have one.

    Thanks AlCaponeJunior!

Or use reverse psychological warfare to keep peace (or to escalate, whatever, eh?) when brew day becomes Disaster Area: have her help you when bottling, or ask her for advice on little things and then...then you can blame her.... hehehehe!:sunglasses:

I just get a bottling partner. One fills one caps and afterwards we both have a good beer

:stuck_out_tongue: This has been on my mind before I even bought the supplies for the first brew. But I know it will not stop here w/ me keg's mean I brew more, need more storage, refrigeration, why to serve-which then turns into a home bar and the only area for space to do this is in the garage which does not have AC/drywall etc.. so here is a whole house remodel just to keg :grimacing:
But trust me it will happen, just later

I have a bottle wand but the damn thing leaked it did not stop all the way when removed. It did slowdown but is just did not stop completely. So I ended up taking it off and using the bucket valve to control flow from just the tubing, filling 10 bottles or so then cap them.

LOL would not work with my wife... She got one of those red light ticket via letter that has a website you go to and see the video. She drives so safe and slow its crazy... no uturns, will not cross traffic she will drive 3 miles out of the way if she can use lights for protected turns instead of cross traffic, uturns etc...

She always give me crap about my driving, so I am watching this video thinking I have to give her a hard time. While doing this laughing about her mistake and giving her a hard time.

With out missing a second she looks at me and says, "Well I am sure it was your fault."

I am thinking WTF and say, "no way during that time I was at work and did not have the car, it was you driving"

Now I know she cant say anything..

She responds, "Nope its your fault. You know I dont like to talk on the phone and drive, but you still call me. You must have called me over and over like you do sometimes, so I picked up the phone was not focused on the road ran the light so really you made me do this"

    I just walked away....

I think I may have just done too much in one seating, we removed labels, washed bottles, sanitized them, then the same for bottling equipment then bottled and capped. long process... needless to say I will not longer let my brewery purchased bottles sit around without rinsing. I will take labels off and wash them as I use/get them.

Yeah I always rinse them thoroughly after each one I drink. But I get what you mean, we always seem to want to do too much at a time. Last weekend we wanted to bottle our first batch of beer. My brother in law came over and since we had the day we decided to brew batch number two and then bottle after. Needless to say, I was burnt at the end.

Depends on the yeast and the temperature. Check after a couple weeks from bottling day. Or one week minimum if you can't wait.
