Thanks for the review. I've been wondering whether to pull the trigger on this one, since it's kind of spendy. Now I think I'll give it a try. Cheers!

I haven't popped mine yet, but look forward to drinking this one. @ONovoMexicano really puts some great New Mexico beers in to our hands. Great guy to share a beer with, as well as just chat.

    Kona Lemongrass Luau

Artwork: Typical Kona-style artwork depicting three dancing ladies in front of a Hawaiian sunset. Custom Kona bottle with the map of Hawaii and the message "Liquid Aloha" embossed.
Appearance: Clear yellow with a thin head that disappears quickly (and completely) leaving no lacing behind. Very little carbonation visible.
Smell: It smells like someone who had recently drank a ginger ale just burped in your face, which is to say not bad.
Taste: Ginger and a hint of lemongrass followed by some barely noticeable maltiness.
Mouthfeel: Pretty thin and watery. Carbonation disappears pretty much immediately.
Overall: It's an OK beer to drink (preferably super chilled) on a hot day.

Wow, look at that reddish purple color, some lacing with fairly decent head retention.
Blueberry on the nose, as well as strawberry, raspberry, citrus and slight vanilla.
Very, very nice on the palate, smooth and not overly tart.
Very nice feel and finish, so refreshing.
Will definitely grab a few more of these before they're gone!

I hope you find it's worth it. It definitely came across to me as a refreshing IPA that is nice and subtle in its bitterness.

Woah... was that pool awesome... and even better what made it more awesome was that I got a beer too!!

Bottle of Anchor Steam (glass kept outside the deck area), to go with it how nice is that! Man it was still hot.

Unfortunately I brought home something else, a sunburn a bit on my back. In the end though it's ok, but it will be interesting to see how that turns out tomorrow.

That said things might be cooling off a bit, there might even be rain?! get out of here!! which would be great for my garden! Those hop vines are growing real well too!

    That said what's next?

Poured from the can into a nonic pint glass.

Shiny chestnut out of the bottle hitting with not a sound into the glass. Forms with a foamy appearance and light tan one finger head that just barely seems to get going. Creamy bowled thin puck and collar, resting on a dark mahogany body, with some good clarity towards the top.

Good solid aroma. Creamy coffee notes that are nicely accented by the base malts. Nutty and toasty with a thick rich sensing almost chocolate flavor coming in all around. Coffee angle actually hits to nice ground dark spice tones of clove and even sweet nutmeg.

Palate continues the goods. Creamy mouthfeel with a bit of spice and vanilla tones, makes for a nice palate. First sip is of nice rich coffee and an almost molasses nutty flavor that coats everywhere. Slightly boozy astringent aftertaste, maybe a bit of pine to herbal hop push, but also with some nice coffee grounds and bitterness that fills the stomach nicely. Feels a tad boozy. Slightly flattened a bit, almost cask like out of the can (none to surprising considering the maker), but full of nice rich solid flavors.

A real nice coffee brew with a good English style behind it.

Thank you kindly. Figuring out how to start NBS is more fun to do than I ever thought it would be. Although sometimes, I must admit, I disgust even myself with the more horrendous alliteration.

Thanks again to the good NBSers today ... y'all got me through the Atrial Rubicite release almost unscathed. :stuck_out_tongue:

New American Wild Ale Sunday for me, a full experience to try Jester King's raspberry beer:

    ... and a taste

Atrial Rubicite is pretty, pretty good. The aroma starts off full musty barn then quickly turns into sweet cherries and eventually raspberry. The flavor is much more sour, lemons and more lemons, while the raspberries mask a lot of the musty barn/wet hay/dried grain sacks at first then start pushing in some actual sweet fruit flavor. The nose gets super sweet, like sugary syrup sweet, but the flavor remains a sour/sweet mix with lemons and raspberries dominating. It's interesting how some of the signature Jester King farmhouse notes exist in the introduction then all but disappear. Haven't had another JK brew that does that.

I managed to snag a second 8 oz. glass full of this stuff, and this one was the very last pour from the 2016 batch ... no joke:

Getting that last glass made the crazy turnaround from working the late shift Saturday night to driving from Bryan-College Station to Austin early Sunday morning feel like a smart thing to do. Not sure *how* smart, but it sure was fun!:grinning:

Enjoy your weeks and be safe out in the heat!

    Cheers!

Greetings, NBS crew. The scorching heat/incredibly high humidity finally released its grip on southern Minnesota last nigh, so I'm sitting on the patio after mowing the Ovaltine family grounds enjoying the bat shiznit out of this excellent Double White IPA from Kern River.

This is my second beer from Kern River, and I really enjoyed the first, so I was anticipating this all week. It did not disappoint.

I think white IPA's are gorgeous beers, and this one is the (early 70's version) Raquel Welch of white IPA's. A cloudy golden straw color with a finger of white head, this beer glows. The smell is pineapple, mango, citrus - really dank for a white IPA.

The taste, though, features the dryness I associate with a white - and a really dank hop flavor that I don't normally find in a white. It has the pineapple and mango and citrus, but there's another flavor I'm getting - cantaloupe maybe? Not sure, but I really like what it brings to this beer.

This is one of the most quaffable (I don't like that term, but it fits this beer) 8.5% ABV beers I've had the pleasure to experience. I wish I had purchased more of this. Rated 4.27.

Pours a nice 3/4 inch mocha head over a near black body.
    Nose of vanilla, cinnamon, mocha.
Tastes of mocha with a bit of heat from the cinnamon.
Feels like a regular coffee with extra cream?!?!?
Overall, yeah, I'll get another one of these!

Next up, this massive imperial stout from Prairie.

Full disclosure: I don't particularly enjoy "booze bombs," and this is definitely boozy,so consider that when reading my evaluation of this beer.

It pours pretty close to jet black (some light leaks through the edges), and there's a finger of tan head. The smell is dark chocolate, dark fruit, and a boozy quality from the apple brandy barrels.

The taste has the dark chocolate, and the apple brandy is REALLY present. If you like "booze," this is world class. If you don't like booze, it's merely great. I don't like booze.

    Rated 4.21.

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Thanks to @cavedave for getting us started off today. Yet another semi-busy week ahead of me, with some biking and not much else. Got more new beers on Friday night so I am stocked up again. Review 4500 is coming up in less than 2 weeks for me. A buddy of mine got me a Westy 12 as a birthday gift earlier this month, so I figured I'll do it then.

    New beers:

New to MI as of a couple weeks ago via Shelton Brothers. Some kind of Ancient yeast wild ale. This is really great! Aromas and flavors of big tart lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange zest, pineapple, pear, guava, papaya, mango, melon, pepper, hay, straw, and light leather/musty funk; with a light-moderate wheat/crackery malts. Moderate tartness and peppery yeast finish. Medium-high carbonation, light-medium body; very smooth and crisp; fairly acidic and light grainy wheat in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate acidic dryness, and super refreshing. Tastes like a standard dry hopped Brett wild ale, but I have no complaints. I loved it. 4.05
    [IMG]

BBA Quadrupel. Wow this is amazing! Aromas and flavors of huge caramel, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, molasses, vanilla, bourbon, coconut, and toasted oak; with moderate raisin, plum, fig, date, apple, and light peppery yeast. Light peppery yeast and bourbon/oak tannic spice on the finish, balancing the sweetness. Very full bodied with a creamy/slick/silky mouthfeel. Slight hint of tannic oak dryness. Insanely smooth, mildly warming ABV @12%; zero barrel booziness at all! DAMN. So much complexity going on here, and so rich but never cloying. Fantastic balance of the barrel. Blew me away. 4.35
    [IMG]

Dry hopped Berliner with Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Stillwater / Hudson Valley collab. This is outstanding! Aromas and flavors of big tart lemon, lime, green apple, pear, peach, passion fruit, white wine, hay, straw, grass, floral, pepper, and light musty funk; with some light wheat/cracker malt presence and verrrrry slight vinegar. Nice spicy/tart finish; very crisp, moderately acidic, with light grainy wheat in the mouthfeel. Bit of salt/salinity as well. Light bodied with nice dryness. Highly refreshing. The complexities of both white wine and Berliner weisse compliment each other pretty much seamlessly. Very impressive all around. 4.2

Late to the party today, just got home from a weekend of fishing with the family. Kids are in bed and it's time for a beer. Lost Nation Mosaic IPA. Haven't really heard all that much about Lost Nation but I'm a sucker for mosaic so I had to grab it. Pours a very hazy straw color with a bubbly white head which dissipates quickly, little lacing. Aroma pops with the classic mosaic profile, a little dank and earthy with some cantaloupe and berries. Taste primarily follows suit but the fruity flavors show up first and lead into the dank flavors, a small amount of onion in the finish. Malts are pretty slim in here, which is ok but with single hops I'd really love to see some more complexity. Flavor is fairly light overall with a little bitterness. Mouthfeel is smooth with tingly carbonation. It's a good beer overall, has all the elements of a mosaic IPA, the haziness was a surprise, but in the end I think I wanted another layer of flavor. Will definitely pass for a mosaic fix though.

    Hey,gang, I'm back with another-
    [IMG]
Dinner's over and I'm settling in for the night- probably watch another episode of The Last Kingdom on Netflix- but I'm still in the mood for something tart and quenching. Victory Kirsch Gose to the rescue!

This one retains its gose character quite well, and there really is just a bit of cherry in there. But that's all it needs anyway; a touch more than an accent, but not so much that it detracts from the sharp lemon-like tartness or the bready base of the beer. I gotta tell ya, I thought this would be my last one of the night, but it's just so refreshing and easy to drink that it's just about gone already.

So, yeah, it's pretty straightforward, that's for sure. But it's also expertly assembled and laser focused, which may be a greater asset in this context. I'll give a very pleasurable A- to this beer as well, all said and done (4.0).

Trout Slayer has a great appearance with tons of effervescent bubbles that do not stop, like watching a fishtank. The head is soapy and full, the nose is faint to none, the flavor has orange peel, bitter pine, and dry wheat. Overall I'll pass next time but I'm glad to have checked it off.
