I love the idea for once a month like the book thread. Gives people a chance to prepare and will make for great discussion.

Greetings, fellow NBSers, and thanks to @utopiajane for getting us underway,

For once I had no new beers whatsoever during the week, contenting myself with a couple different local and regional beers that were in a certain quantity in the ol' fridge. It's been a hot week in the Inland Northwest, with temperatures varying from the low to high 90s. Today seems a minor respite from that. Right now it's high-70s, with a predicted high of 84.

On Tuesday I took possession of a box of local beer and swag from our very own @beertunes:

Yes, that's an "airline" bottle of local bourbon located on the right, near the foot of the bottle furthest to the right . That is something I've never thought of for swag, but I think I'll add it to my repertoire. Anyone getting a box from me in the future could well find a small sample of Dry Fly product in it. Hopefully they like wheat whiskey, gin or vodka (I don't think their bourbon makes it into those tiny bottles, or at least not yet).

I've yet to crack open anything from it, but plan to later on today or tonight. First, I'm dealing with a new beer that was already in my possession, named after an iconic villain, or at least anti-hero:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22432/79451/?ba=woemad#review

Okay, nothing great. It was canned a little over three months ago, but my score’s in line with other reviewers, so I don’t think that was why I was underwhelmed. It had potential but falls short. The hops just don’t seem in sympathy with the coffee, which is itself burined in the mix and takes quite a while to emerge as the beer warms up. So far I’ve had nothing locally that reminds me of the cans of Regular Coffee and C.R.E.A.M. sent me by @SammyJaxxx. Come on, PNW! We’re supposed to be all about the coffee!

In a little while I’m going to walk over to Iron Goat and try my friend Shereece's Sassmouth Saison that went on tap yesterday (All Iron Goat employees are being allowed to formulate their own recipe, which then is brewed in a small batch - fingers crossed it doesn't run out before I get there) and perhaps have their porchetta sandwich for lunch (I do my own version of a porchetta in the crock pot, so I'm curious about their spin on it).

Then I'll be hitting one of those big boys @beertunes hooked me up with. I still haven't figured out which one to lead with. Any suggestions?

Hi everyone and thanks, as always, to Maria for the intro. It's another hot, humid day in North Carolina but not too hot to share my review of The Event Horizon Imperial Stout by Olde Hickory Brewery. This Stout has the highest BA rating of any North Carolina beer, and given that it is a Fall release I'm glad to have found it. In a word, it's a magnificent BA Imperial Stout! I think its taste equals KBS and BCBS but at 8.5% ABV, it's far more drinkable. I now wish I had bought another bottle or two. Btw, the hotel glassware doesn't do the head and lacing justice. Here's my review:

    4.59/5 rDev +5.3%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.75 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Bottle dated 11/18/2015. Poured into pint glass. It pours jet black with a foamy, mocha-colored head and lacing. It's a very aromatic stout with a strong fragrance of bourbon, Cocoa, toffee, and coffee. The smell is very inviting! The first taste encountered is the bourbon; it's strong but smooth and mellow. It is followed by honey, toffee, milk chocolate, coffee, and a hint of dark fruit. It's absolutely decadent; one of the best BA stouts I've ever had. What is really impressive is the mouth feel It's rich and creamy as expected but with an ABV of 8.5% it's not overpowering like BCBS or KBS. It might be a little less viscous than the latter but the flavor is right with them. Overall, I'm thrilled to be able to try this. It is a world-class BA Imperial Stout that is right up there with the kings of the style.

Love your posts that include statements like this :stuck_out_tongue:.
(Note: I also enjoy your posts in general)

Carton Regular Coffee is now mythical in my mind after the one time I had it at Extreme Beerfest. East Coaster in me smiles at this sentence in general, though .

Also, thanks for the encouragement on "Throwback Thursday, beer edition", guys. If I go through with it (or someone else runs with it, even), I expect posts from the likes of @jvgoor3786, @JuicesFlowing, @Premo88 (and others). Maybe I can entice @LeperJim into a very simple graphic for it????? I only ask it include one spaceship . Another [real] NBS post coming up...

@Prager62, thanks for your review! PseudoSue is on my short list of "seek out" beers. The katydids are out in force at night in Jersey, as well. Time to double-down at the shore! Cheers!

Picked this up in the morning since I believe it was mis-priced at $15.99. Best price I had seen was $18.99.

O'so Wease the Juice is bright red with 2 finger off white head and moderate retention. Splotty lacing on the glass along with a thin ring. Nose is funky sweet, tart cherry skins and juice. Notes of cherry, wine, and some Brett. Flavor is slightly tart cherry with very light sweetness. There is some woodiness and Brett flavors on the finish. Light bodied with moderate carbonation with a dry finish. Not too different from Blood on the Cherry (which I had last week on NBS), only the faint notes of Brett.

    New Hefeweizen Sunday (week 597)

Greeting fellow NBSers from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY. Not so hot today as it's been, thankfully, as yesterday and today are the annual Cleaning the Augean Stables counterpart at work. These two days of work have beaten me the fuck up. I am a BOS right now and I soooo wish this beer was refreshing me as a good Hefeweizen ought do. It is not. And regarding this Hefe from New Paltz Brewing (New Paltz is the nearest actual town to me) let's take a little quiz, shall we?

Which brewery is NOT located in New Paltz?
    A. Brewery At Bacchus
    B. Gilded Otter
    C. New Paltz Brewing
    D. Pull Brewing

If you guessed C you win and get to not try this beer as your prize. Here are the details

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/43976/210925/?ba=cavedave#review

of why I really am not digging this, and am about to hit the rest of the growler of DBZ I started y'day, which I know will do the trick to make this tired old hippie happy. Hope you have a better Great American Beer in your glass than this one. Cheers!

Ok, it has gotten to the point of the evening where this beer has become a desirable option for NBS. Sharing with the GF, as always, but I will still get the bulk of this 18oz of imperial stout:

(edit: oops!!! forgot I hadn't finished the photo or mentioned the beer)
    Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout:
I must admit, I let this sit a few minutes while I read a couple posts and prepped this one. The tan cap atop this thing is still sitting there. It's waiting patiently for me to burst its surface, likely to leave its mark on the opposite end of the glass. Before I do this, though, I have to know if it smells fear...

Nope! But it does have that "English stout" note to it. A slightly sour milk note to the nose, but it pairs with a dark chocolate and slightly nutty note. It's far from the bold bitter roasted stouts that I am more used to, but it is not weak in power, and is enticing in its own way.

Okay - the streaks of damage do appear across from me as I take my first big sip of this beer. Tan foam tells of my actions. The cap, however, barely flinched. Classic deep roasted malt notes, a decent malt base. The malts, however, are bitter in their own right, and by the end a roasted coffee flavor linger.

In between, I must admit, I got a little more licorice in this beer than I expected. After getting it, though, I can kind of see it in the nose. Combined with the lighter feel - specifically a medium-light body, and I get a certain aspect of a porter base (yes - this is according to the style boundaries I have defined). However, this does stay more roasted in nature (the coffee lingering) versus more bitter.

This is not going to fight with the thick and extremely robust American Imperial stouts... ate least not for boldness. But it deserves its ratings, I think, in its own rights. Well done!

That's an excellent point, plus I'm not sure the evening warmth will be particularly complementary to a big barrel aged stout or an oyster stout (only my second, incidentally). That alone narrows it down to the two Belgian-y beers.

I already know I'll be posting about 120 Minute once a year. Just have to decide on my first post. I have a TenFidy I've been sitting on a year. I was not as impressed as others with that beer when I drank the other three fresh. Maybe that's my first post

Regular coffee is truly unique! I have one can left and every time I think about opening it I think, "there will be a more opportune time." Next thing I know, it'll be January and I'll be driving down to Carton to load up.
