Hopefully that is a paraphrase or else they may owe a certain politician royalties!?!

Hopefully the new owners will teach them consistency.

I was there last month, no worries if they don't, there is so much other greatness in that town it won't matter!
Try to visit Torschuster bar & meet Tomas, the owner/bartender/classic vinyl spinner. A great experience in an awesome little bar, (I just wish he would have sold me the "Halt" sign from an East Berlin checkpoint)

Thanks for the suggestion. With only two days in town, we may have to skip a brewery or two . Sounds(no pun intended) like this place is definitely worth a stop. Whats their tap list like ?

There are only 2 beers on draught, Herrin Pils (very fresh) & a 2nd beer that I do not recall, but it was from a regional Franconia Brewery & it was outstanding (someone help me out w/ the name of this beer, I think it is a Torschuster draught regular). The other good thing is that they stock all of the Bamberg beers in bottles, so if you miss a brewery or two, you can find the beer at Torschuster.
Enjoy your time in Bamberg, it is a great town to visit & drink beer!

Last Nov. we stopped at Klosterbräu. The beers were not as good as I remembered, no major off flavors, but not süffig either. The stube was the most empty we saw in Bamberg, just two other tables with a few old gents.

Greifenklau was packed with all ages, and the beer was lovely. That was not how I remembered it.

Went to Klosterbrau last Christmas. Braunbier was delicious and spot-on. The Bock had clear diacetyl issues. Schwaerzla was great, too, as was the food.

Were the issues bad enough that you didn't finish the beer or was it tolerable?

Was clearly present but fairly tame in terms of diacetyl. Just a ****ling flaw in an otherwise good beer. Finished it and then switched to Braunbier.

I really enjoy Torchuster and it's absolutely worth visiting for the atmosphere and Tomas. Also if you're looking for draft list, my favority spot is Cafe Abseits. They post their beer list each week and also routinely carry many local Franconian beers.

Another place to possibly visit during the warmer months is Zapfhahn at Untere Sandstrasse 14 (not too far from Pelikan) -- the site of the former Blaue Glocke. On paper this should be a must visit place -- 5 beers on tap -- last fall it was: Mahrs U, Keesmann Pils, Huppendofer Vollbier, Hölzlein Vollbier and a guest. Plus 35+ different mostly Franconian beers in the bottle (plus some German "craft" beers).

Why lukewarm recommendation? I don't think they are all that interested in the beer itself, just as a marketing tool. I don't think they clean the lines often enough (if at all). Their menu had a map showing the bottled beer they had and there were many, many errors.

The warmer months comment comes from they have a nice courtyard and when it is open they don't seem to mind if you stop in for a beer or two without eating. But when it is closed they really don't want you sitting down inside unless you are ordering food. The last straw for me was last October when the place was maybe 25% full but all the tables had "reserved" signs on them -- generic ones not the usual German practice of putting a time on them. They wouldn't let three of us sit for a beer even though we said if the people showed up we would finish drinking the the Schweme. And they were very, very unfriendly about it.

I am mentioning this is case other people of different experiences. Every time I see a post here about how great the Klosterbräu beers were, I make an effort to try one on my next trip (usually 3 times a year). And invariably I have found them as bad as in the past -- a highpoint is if I can actually finish one. This past May was an exception, the braunbier was actual decent. It really makes me wonder if there are both inhouse and contract brewed versions and I by bad luck get the inhouse versions.
