Definitely, that's true. It's maybe because it was one of the first beers I really can remember really enjoying and I have more nostalgia for it than actual critical acclaim for the taste.

I am also guessing that many craft beer drinkers enjoy the sweeter (caramel) flavors of this beer. Some BAs will proselytize that a beer like Sam Adams Oktoberfest is not brewed "true to style" but for many craft beer drinkers they simply want a beer that they enjoy drinking.

    Cheers!

I get it when I retro nasal, so I suppose that's more related to aroma. It comes across as a taste, though.

Not quite, but close. Some estimates are that about 70% of what we experience as flavors come from the sense of smell. The orthonasal and the retronasal both influence the flavors we pick up. The difference between them is primarily in the pattern or profile of sensory responses from both smell and taste. Cut off the ortho or the retro and you probably will still enjoy a beer, But there will be some differences between what you pick up with the ortho and the retro. So what seems to be taste is a result of both the aromas and the tastebuds on the tongue.

If I can smell it I can taste it or at least think I can. Don't know what the diagnosis is but a surefire cure is avoid anything that smells bad.

One of my least favorite styles. So, I'm not looking forward to all of them.

Strictly speaking taste is currently limited to five aspects: salt, sweet, bitter, sour and umami. There is work occurring right now to include a sixth aspect of fat. It is common for folks to discuss taste buds on the tongue but taste is broader than that: it also includes roof of the mouth, the overall mouth cavity, etc.

When we commonly say we taste something what we really mean is flavor perception, Flavor perceptions is a very complicated process. It involves taking sensory input from various sensors:

    · Visual (eyes)

    · Taste (mouth cavity, etc.)

    · Aroma/Olfaction (both orthonasal and retronasal)

    · Texture (mouthfeel)

    · Temperature (oral cavity)

    · Etc.

And then the real ‘magic’ occurs as the brain integrates all of these inputs to create an overall flavor perception.

All of this to just enjoy a beer!?!:grimacing:

    You betcha!!

    Cheers!

It's also important to remember that the vocal old-school lager lovers in the forums are also a "small portion of the overall" BeerAdvocate community.
That beer is the number one most reviewed Oktoberfest here and a respectable #97 on the top rated list (a list that is primarily made up of beers with few reviews). (I don't care for it myself )

Chris, that is an excellent point. There is indeed a lot of 'activity' by a few on the topic of Sam Adams Octoberfest beer. I suspect that Jim Koch is getting the 'last laugh' here.

Having read so much positive commentary about this brewery, it's very disappointing they don't distribute anywhere near me (Suffolk Co., NY). :slight_frown:

Any Octoberfest that isn't a lager....like Harpoon Octoberfest for example. Nothing wrong with a nice malty ale but I always feel a bit cheated when they don't disclose that the festbier you are purchasing is not a lager

I want to try this one so bad. I really like their regular festbier; hope they make more Zelt this year!

If you're going over the GWB any time soon, you can find them in Fort Lee, just a stone's throw from the bridge. That's where I've been getting them.

Warsteiner's is more than weak compared to many of it's German counterparts.

Lthat beer took home the gold at GABF in the oktoberfest division.
My favorite is Paulaner's marzen bier. Since it is year round I get my fill. I have been wanting to get my hands on more festbier styles this fall.
