    Kenny,

When are you going? I am going up for the final weekend. I am also hoping to slip out of the madness and once and grab some local craft beers. I have read about a couple spots.

If we are around at the same time, I'd love to hang out

Go to Weissebrauhaus, the Schneider brewery tap. They have classic wheat beers and some more modern interpretations like Hopfenweise, a wonderful and unique beer. And try an Augustiner Helles straight from the wood in Nuernbergerbratwurstgloeckl right next to the cathedral. The sausages are amazing, too. In the Augustiner Keller you can soak up the atmosphere and cask Edelstoff.

I've got an active streak going that I'm not going to break now!! This year will be 31 straight, and 32 overall. :grimacing: Started in '83, missed '84-'85, and have made all since 1986.... Not staying in München this year; just day-tripping from Nürnberg....

    Prosit!

    Wow, impressive. I'm jealous.

I was born in '82, and in my 34 years on this planet, you've spent the fall of 32 of them at Oktoberfest.

    Prosit indeed!

P.S. What's your favorite Oktoberfest (be it amber or pale)?

    Thnx!

At The Fest itself, I like the Spaten version, as well as Augustiner (I even finish it!). Stateside, I really enjoyed the SN-Riegele version last year, and in years past I have liked Brooklyns, though it's been a while on that one. Smuttynose also came out with a good one last year....

    Prosit!

I've only been in the Paulaner and Hofbrau tents, and I loved the Hofbrau. Paulaner was decent, although I feel like some of the imported cans/draft here in the US have been better over the years. I do remember having the W'eisn on draft as soon as I returned here in the US, and it tasted exactly the same as it did in Munich. But I also remember just thinking it was "ok" in the tents...memory gets fuzzy over the years. Tried the Augustiner (I believe it was their Festbier) at the hall in Munich, that was my least favorite. I really dig the bottles of Edelstoff we get here, so who knows...my palate may have been different back then.

I thought the SN last year was ok, not brewed poorly, simply didn't suit my tastes. I love the Brooklyn, one of the best (if not the best) amber-style Oktoberfests around. And more sessionable than most at 5.5% as well. I'm fairly certain I tried the Smuttynose late in the season on draft at Redbones and enjoyed it.

Not that you asked, but since I love Oktoberfest discussions...my favorites are Hofbrau/Weihenstephan for pale, and Spaten, Ayinger (a tweener in my opinion), and Hacker Pschorr for amber versions. It would be difficult for me to wittle it down from there, and some years I've liked some more than others, so there's year to year variation. Not to mention I mix it up with bottle and drafts versions...luckily, I get to enjoy them all and I am not forced to choose between them.

I'm rambling, but I love this season. If you get the chance, head to Olde Magoun's in Somerville in September/October...just about every imported Oktoberfest on draft, plus the food is great. I have some photos here around the forums somewhere...

Sorry @steveh and @Bierman9, that wasn't my intention! Guess I owe you both a Maß of Festbier at Oktoberfest now...when are we going?

The Spaten Schutzenfest has always been my favorite because it was the first tent I ever stopped at. I guess it's Lowenbrau sponsored these days, but I have a great anniversary Maßkrug with Spaten trademarking all over it.

The Pschorrbrau Bräurosl probably takes a second place spot for me, if only because of the great Wurst kiosk right out the front door!

Munich "was" good. Even on off-peak hours and non-Saturday nights still too touristy.
City of Munich is still alive and good and beers at AUgistiner are excellent.

Smaller cities are better and parades are everyday versus only first day in Munich.

What do I know I've only been to 7 Oktoberfests.

The Frau and I are headed to the Munich area AFTER Oktoberfest; we're avoiding the city and staying in Inning am Ammersee which will be our base for hitting up Andechs Bräustüberl and Ayinger.

We're going to be in the Munich area the last week of October. A couple of nights in Nesselwang to do the castle thing and then 3 nights staying near the Viktualienmarkt.

A visit to Andechs and Tegernsee is on the list.

I will be in Munich during the Oktoberfest. Not really a fan of Märzen, but if you want to hang out for some beers at Tap House Munich, just send me a message. Cheers!

Hey, there! If you are looking for German craft beers while in Germany head to the Globus Supermarket, REWE Getrankemarkt, or TOOMS Getrankemarkt. They each have a craft beer section. I love dark beers, so I picked up these dark beers at the Frankfurt Craft Beer Fest in the spring.
