    I haven't had this one so I have no horse in this race, but reverse argument be made for you; that because were excited about it and are a fan of JK you psychologically smell "standard fruity funk" as opposed to garbage.

    Exactly my point, entirely psychological. If you are looking for something specific in the nose, you are likely going to find it. But I'm aware that my senses are being manipulated and I'm okay with it.

    Huh? You hypothesized that people's sense of smell are being altered by a preconception of how something will smell, but don't think you are susceptible to the same issue (expecting a beer to smell "like a Jester King beer")??

    You admitted yourself you haven't even tried the beer, no point to argue for the sake of arguing.

    And I haven't argued how anything smells, just throwing out something for thought.

    While I don't claim to be an expert, I've had some sensory training on beer off-flavors and aromas. I read the blog post about this beer and was expecting tropical fruit and Sauvignon blanc — not garbage. It's interesting that some people compared the aroma to papaya and one person even mentioned durian. I thought I detected butyric acid, which some people describe as fruity and candy-like, while others, like me, describe as like rancid cheese and baby vomit.

    @rainerschuhsler bottle or draft? If you read the blog post describing tropical fruit and Sauvignon Blanc you also read garbage, doesn't mean you didn't smell that, just sayin. I honestly didn't get a ton of aroma off of the beer at all. Just some typical funk. This is all in reference to draft btw

    @jesterkingbeer

    Any more of these left for this weekend?

    Dying to see the weekend menu. Hopefully there is a spontaneous surprise.

    Edit: Just saw the blog post

    Bottle, which is why I originally asked. Wasn't sure if I had a bad one or what.

    I was hesitant to use descriptors about what I thought about the beer early on during bottle conditioning, because I don't want to create preconceived notions about flavors and aromas, beyond saying how we made the beer and what ingredients we used. With that said, I thought it was important to try to point out in this case how much the beer transformed during refermentation in the bottle, and how important this phase is for our beer. I personally get the "grape/papaya nectar" character you mentioned and am really thrilled with where this beer is when we released it. -- Jeff

    I was very glad to find Jeppe still on tap yesterday. This time, I went into it trying to find a bad smell, and still couldn't. Sad I couldn't get another bottle, but really enjoyed getting another glass of it.

    Time is such a magical thing in the world of Jester King. This beer was delicious when released (and according to jeffs post, time was instrumental), but i really don't think this beer is getting any worse, just different. A lot of you have had JK with time on it, so you know it holds up. If it doesn't get better, you know it changes, but I've yet to crack a bottle of mixed culture JK with time on it that was terrible. within reason (time enough to outlast a good cap). Be sure that if you don't like it now, you might later. But I would never expect JK to release something that is ever at all even questionable in quality. A lot of the JK people are well versed in not allowing off flavor to just skirt by. I took a tour once where Jeff talked about the importance of dumping beer that doesn't meet standards. Something a lot of breweries won't do in favor of making a profit.

    I actually got to try this beer over the weekend. It was on draft at JK and there were no bottles left so I don't have that to compare to, however, I enjoyed it. I didn't get the tropical fruit that people were talking about, but I didn't get garbage. To me it was honestly closer to a French Sauvignon Blanc than it was to NZ. It was spicier and more floral. I did enjoy it and hope they brew it again in the future so I can hopefully snag some bottles.
