Enough with the hops already!

    Im going to resurrect this instead of starting my own.

    Not that i agree with removing hops completely but im going in a different direction.

    Im really burnt out on IPAs. To the point i dont want to drink them for a LONG time because if all i have is ipas i just wont drink. Thats the level im at

    So im curious. What do others go for when breaking off from ipas. I've been at a ton of belgians and things like bock, dunkel, hefe and gose (subtly sour) interest me more. It seems all german but i do enjoy english pales and brown etc...also. But are there available beers with unique yeasts like Ommegang? Or can put out low abv dark beers such as Yards Brawler? Or am i in this age of beer at a loss because of a sea of ipa?

    IPA burnout is quite real, I go back to AALs where there really is no hops involved, try PBR. Bourbon. It's like fighting the flu though, it's tough , it's real, and it can last a few months. Stay away from a thing even remotely hoppy, no PAs , no Pils, just lagers.

    When I feel burnt out on hops, I do a 360. I've been loving more malty beers lately. Porters, stouts, brown ales, scotch ales, bocks. I've also been drinking a lot of wheat beers lately--witbier and hefeweizen. Don't freak out if you get sick of hops. There are actually are tons of other options if you look. Gose, dubbels, tripels, quads, mild ales, bitters, ESBs, weizenbock, doppelbock, dunkelweizen, Berliner weisse, AALs, saisons, etc.

    I am in a similar situation and have been turning to Lager's, mainly from Jacks Abby. Also Gose, belgians (tried Orval for the first time), and you can never go wrong with a Russian Imp. Stout. RIS' are my favorite.

    I dont mind not liking hops anymore. I only have about two more ipas in the fridge. Because when Ommegang makes american ipas i take notice because of curiosity. But yea my level of hop burn out is so high id rather not have a beer at all if its an ipa. Ive been drinking saisons and browns and sours. Since fall is coming ill get into the marzens hopefully not too hoppy and ill try and stay away all winter. Coffee beers are about the same thing as ipas for me. I dont hate them but no longer have interest.

    Bourbon is a good idea. im more into rum myself so ill look into it. Also innis and gunn has pretty interesting barrel aged beers ill check out.

    Thats another thing, I bought a bottle of Highland Park 12 the other day, and I hate hard alcohol, I just wanted something different.

    Bourbon, Fine Scotch, Dark Estate Rum are all worthy additions, nice sippers. You could do worse than a stiff Martni or a Mint Julup too. Have a no real hop beer and sip on one of the above.

    Yo thats my favorite rum i can sip it straight. The darker the better but not into sailor jerry. Smells and tastes like dr pepper and im not into it. Going to try pussers navy rum soon. To not get deleted from bein off topic, Curious about innis and gunn rum aged, if its spiced or just a aged non spiced rum barrel.

    I am old enough to remember my choices being BMC or imports, I chose imports. There are still plenty of great malt forward beers to be had. I am lucky enough to have a local brewery that does an exceptional job with traditional styles. Live Oak does an amazing hefeweizen and Vienna lager, not to mention an excellent German style pils.

    I'm on the ipa burnout train also. I'm burning through my barrel aged stout cellar at record pace. I've been getting into sours more but the very good ones are also very expensive. Love scotch/wee ales but I only have one backwoods bastard left.

    Im fortunate enough that i work in a liquor store and the guy who orders the beer is a fan of sours so i see a lot of them, but most to me are too sour. Luckily, southern tier, dogfish and river horse have new sours out so at reasonable prices.

    Dominion has a barrel aged stout in 6 packs I've had my eye on since 4th of july.

    You'll find hops again but go for styles around 5.3 percent. Go a little high a little low. You will get a totally different palate. Abv changes how a beer drinks. You will hit all kinds of lager beer which is what you take when you burn out from hops, and saisons which are quite hoppy and wits, wheats and browns.

    That's why I'm back on the dark beers brah - all malty and moody, get stuck into a Theakston Old Peculiar or three!

    When I moved to Oregon ten years ago, I got pretty burnt out on hops, too, for a while. I'd still drink IPAs and West Coast Red Ales and such, but pilsner became my go to style, which I would round out with brown ales and Belgians when I needed a change of pace. A decade later, I feel like there's so much variety readily available (coupled with the fact I have more disposable income and can keep more than one type of beer in the fridge), that it's pretty easy to drink to my mood almost all the time.

    If you're into Belgian-style ales, check out Unibroue. They have their own house yeast that is recognizable right away to me. La Fin du Monde and Trois Pistoles are awesome.

    Seeing as this user is from Germany, I would venture to say English may be a second language for them. I think their point was conveyed rather well despite the harmless slip-up of a figure of speech. Their post contributed much more to this discussion than most other comments in this thread. Most just seem intent on bashing OP for voicing an opinion (even though I personally do not agree with his/her opinion).

    For some reason, I just can't get sick of hops. It must be some sort of addiction or something. It started out innocently enough, but now I find myself moving on to the harder stuff (looking at you, Ruin Ten). That said, this is a great time of year for a hop break with all the Oktoberfests and pumpkin beers coming out.

    This happened to me recently too, it was so sudden and bad that I couldn't even smell a hoppy beer without going "ugh". What I did was revisit some of the beers I used to enjoy that kind of took a back seat to the IPAs/DIPAs e.g. amber and Vienna Lagers. But it wasn't too long (about a month or so) before I was craving something a little hoppy again and yesterday I picked up an assortment of IPAs/DIPAs. But what I am going to do this time is make it more of an even spread in my fridge so I don't burn out again. The good news is that at this time of year it is very easy for me to focus on other things other than the hoppy beers, as I love Oktoberfests and Pumpkin beers.

    I agree with this except for the Pils and PA part, you can find some not very hoppy ones that drink pretty smoothly. But I know where you were going, though, and the safest bet if you don't know the particular beer well is to stay away from it.

    I had it so bad after a trip into Vermont, that I was literally giving away growlers of Hill Farmstead beers, I couldn't stand the thought of drinking them, kinda gagged at the thought. It took literally months before I could drink anything but Miller Lite. It's bad burnout when you give away HF.
