One more? Sure, why not.

Almanac IPA is bright, translucent golden orange with a very nice 2 finger white head. Solid retention and webbed lacing on the glass. It is wet, fresh, musty, dank with some notes of citrus and tropical fruit. It is rather aromatic. Tropical and citrus fruits with some melon flavors. There is a earthy, musty and dank grapefruit that seems to be most prevalent. Plenty of bitterness on the finish. Medium feel with fantastic carbonation that give it a wonderful body. It seems to finish a bit dry. Enjoyed this from a can and it had a nice resemblance to some Toppling Goliath Pale Ales.

Screw that! Drink a beer that is new to you, and then just type like you're talking to us over that beer in the backyard. If I can do this, you certainly can too. Don't overthink it, don't try too hard, and HAVE FUN! Welcome aboard!

New Beer Sunday: A new Berliner Weisse

Evenin' NBSers with special salutations to those seekers of sour tartness that helps counter the heat.

Well the weather here was quite warm and humid and the humidity was not helped much by a couple of chains of thunderstorms that passed through here. The visiting family members are occupied with putting children to bed so I've a chance to sample a new beer. Meanwhile I've also been able to read through some reports on more new beers to seek and try.

This evening's new beer in my glass is the Victory Berliner Weisse with Elderflower. As usual my review, in progress til the beer is finished, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/345/237903/?ba=drtth#review

In keeping with the origins of this style of beer I'm watching/listening to an unusal Jazz/Classical concert that was done in Berlin. The Oscar Peterson Trio is performing a salute to Bach (J. S.). Bach had some interesting ties to the Berlin area in that some of his most famous music, The Brandenburg Concertos were finished off and presented to the Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt back in the day. (Brandenburg surrounds the City-State of Berlin.)

So far as I know this concert by Peterson is only available on DVD, but that is one of the beauties of YouTube. So the link below is to a video of Peterson and his Trio during the concert they gave that included this salute to Bach. It is nothing short of amazing to watch and listen to Peterson and his group perform.

    Salute to Bach

    Cheers, all!

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Thanks to @cavedave for getting us started off this week. I went to the MI homebrew festival yesterday and had some fun talking with other brewers about recipes and process etc. I love going to it every year, one of the few times during the year I get to have deep discussions about making beer and other beverages. Even though I still have monthly club meetings, I always seem to have more lengthy conversations at the fest. I didn't stay the whole day since the weather was forecast to be rainy in the evening. Definitely got some good tips, and also gave out plenty to others as well. Need to brew another beer really soon. I am thinking I might just do an extract recipe with DME since it'll be much faster for me and my shit stovetop. Other than that, I went to my friends store today and he hooked me up with a ton of Jester king and Fantome saisons, so I have some work to do on those. Finally get to revisit the classic Fantome after over 5 years since my original review. Another plain work week ahead, a bunch of people will be back from vacation this week, so hopefully I get more than 5 emails a day. Been really quiet last 2 weeks.

    New Beer:

Very good Belgian IPA. Aromas and flavors of grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, peach, pear, pineapple, peppercorn, and pine; with some light cracker/bread malt; with herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/pine bitterness and yeast spice on the finish. Light-medium bodied; moderately crisp/sticky in the mouthfeel with a touch of resin and grainy malt character. Light-moderate increasing dryness, no astringent hop character. Really easy drinking and pretty refreshing. Well balanced between yeast and hop character. Seems to be a mix of American and Noble hops. Very well done. Canned 8/8/16 3.78
    [IMG]

This was outstanding! Aromas and flavors of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, berry, mint, pepper, and pine hops; with some light caramel/toasty malt balance; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Moderate pine/herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish. Medium bodied; balanced sticky/resins and grainy creaminess in the mouthfeel. Moderately drying finish; with zero hop astringency. Extremely easy drinking and well balanced. Very dank hop character all around. Definitely a Mosaic fun time going on here. I love it. Bottled 7/27/16 4.25
    [IMG]

This was really excellent! Aromas and flavors of big sour lemon, lime, raspberry, green apple, peach, pear, white wine, orange peel, coriander, peppercorn, oak, hay, straw, musty funk, leather and oak; with some honey/wheat/crackery malts; touch of vinegar and hint of oaken vanilla. Moderately sour/spicy finish. Medium bodied; acidic/tannic mouthfeel with some light-moderate balancing wheat creaminess. Light-moderate increasing acidic dryness; lightly puckering. Very drinkable for 8.6%. I was a really big fan of this. Really impressively well balanced flavors. Great Brett, fruit, Lacto, and spice complexity; with a solid malt backbone. 4.1

Cheers, have a good night NBS

Happy 600, NBSers. This is - by FAR - my favorite thread here, and it's an honor to participate with you all, both regulars (you know who you are) and casual participants alike. In honor of 600, I'm reviewing an anniversary beer that I've been looking forward to this week, and I also have a surprise at the end of this post. First, the beer .....

Full disclosure: I love Stone. I love their beer, and I love their attitude. This beer is another example why. It pours a slightly cloudy brilliant copper with a darker-than-I'm-used-to-for-a-DIPA head 2+ inches thick. This looks more like an imperial red than a DIPA.

The aroma captures the citrusy aspects of the Citra hops, but the avocado flower honey is also present with a sweetness that is welcome. That sweetness really becomes apparent on the taste - the Citra hops jump up and dance all over your tongue, then the honey eases you to a gentle landing. This is 9% ABV, but drinks like it's 6%, with the honey softening the feel so that you finish the bomber and wonder where the next glass is. Rated 4.25.

As for the surprise, @cavedave and his FOMO comment really hit home with me. I live 90 minutes from Surly (and Darkness day) and 150 minutes from Toppling Goliath (and their myriad uber-hyped releases), and it always gives me pause to see the lengths folks go to in order to secure a beer. And that makes me sad, because it's just beer.

So I've got (4) TG King Sue bombers left from a run I made 2 weeks ago. Any NBSer that wants one, send me a message and I'll make arrangements to get it to you. If you want to send me something in return, great. If you don't, that's great, too. Beer it forward, NBSers. And Happy 600.

When I was at Richmond, we often went out to Bumpass and near Goochland. I remember some of the places along River Road- one for which we had a key- but mainly I know best the countryside and my abiding love for the area. Later in the 70s, I had a crazy friend -my old classmate- that lived at Jerdone Castle, a decrepit old place that was cheap to rent and really nicely spooky. It is now an historic property and a country club (I'm pretty sure). Now there's Lake Anna and a nuclear reactor where we just happened to find artifacts that I cherish. I'll never forget the place.

    Another/Revisit New American IPA Sunday!

I don't remember having it, but I did, I'm sure a few years ago. Not bad, but nothing special.

It's been awhile since last time I've had this brew.

Pours a pretty nice clean/clear dark golden yellow color, nice carbonation, with a nice small off-white head, which leaves some sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, nice citrus note. The taste is nice hoppy, citrusy. Medium body. Overall, a nice little tasty brew.

Thanks goes out to seaoflament for this brew.

Pours a nice clean/clear dark golden yellow/orange color, nice carbonation, nice little fizzy/foamy white head, with some nice sticky lacing. The nose is hoppy, with some malts, citrus, and some pine. The taste is bitter, hoppy, slightly sweety, with some nice malt notes, citrus, and slight pines. Medium body. Drinkable, this is another tasty brew from Coronado.

    Cheers!

Here's hoping you find it! It's definitely interesting enough to search out, and obviously the peated malt is the difference maker to me (even though the effect is pretty subtle). At 11%, it's not as amazing as it's trying to be- I always find that the alcohol at that level is too tough to hide, and tends to fight the rich smoothness that is trying to be achieved. Still, it's a really nice blend of flavors, and I hope you enjoy it. Cheers!

The guests are gone after a very enjoyable afternoon of making pizza, drinking, and shooting the bull. I feel like another helping of dessert, so I'm going to pop the top on this 12oz. can of Peach Gruit from Mountain Town Brewing Co. of Mt. Pleasant MI dated 05/19/16. Let's give it a pour in a 13oz. snifter/tulip for the review.

Pours a cloudy orange leaving a finger of white foam that quickly settles to a thick ring. The smell is a very odd mix of acidic and sulphuric like a burnt match along with some peach. Taste is mouth puckering citric tartness along with sweet peaches and apricot. The feel is tart and acidic with a very dry finish.

A friend of mine bought a six pack of this when we were kayaking in Michigan last week and passed one along to me. It is admittedly something I wouldn't buy and I'm no expert in the style. With that said I rather enjoyed it except for the odd sulphuric smell. The peach really shines in the flavor. My score was 3.33 / rDev -10.7%.

I'm out for today folks. It's been fun sharing new beer with you on this milestone occasion. Have a great week, enjoy what's left of summer. Here's the review......

I'm going to keep this brief because I have a couple of brats staring at me that I must devour. This is a beautiful porter, nearly black with a finger of tan head. It tastes like a porter, too - a "regular" porter, not a Porter with rye and vanilla.

I get a smidge of rye, but no vanilla, which is a bit disappointing, because I love vanilla. This isn't bad, in fact it's "good," but my expectations were that it would be great, and it's too thin to be great. Rated 3.81.

Good timing. You might recall my post in the saison thread where I mentioned that Brune is not listed as a style here. Belgian Dark Ale is the best place for it. Have you had their Blonde? If so, let me know how it was.

Hell, I've had some Pyramid Apricots, a few RJ Rocker's Son of a Peach, a periodic Stiegl Radler on the golf course....Peach Gruit sounds like a marketing bingo. I'll bet that some people love it...
