This is their EL34, an IPL that holds a 3.8% A.B.V.

-fine carbonation, expected bread-malt and smoothness. Hop presence is moderate in both aroma and flavor. I'd write more but I'm trying to stay married.

Dirty god damn Canada! It's that there aren't nearly enough good IPAs up here so people tend to be really hyped up for the handful of good ones.

Back from vacation in the Upper peninsula of Michigan, beautiful remote area, abundant lakes, forests, and more forests. Bells Upper Hand Brewery in Escanaba which only distributes to UP and northern Wisconsin, I was able to try their UPA, a solid pale ale and the Lager here called Upper Hand Lager. Both solid beers, wish I'd bough more. This is a crisp, medium body, slightly hoppy and well balanced malt backbone. Could crush these all day! Cheers

Finally off work... now I can DRINK!

Picked this up in Ohio back in June when stopping in Cleveland on my way back from Firefly in Dover. I had never heard of this brewery before, but I was intrigued by the specific style, and the fact it was from New Zealand. Naturally, I had to give it a go.

Appearance: Gorgeous. Not as dark as I had anticipated. Copper colored with excellent clarity. Two finger, creamy head on top that dies down to half a finger that lingers, leaving a lot of lacing on the glass.

Smell: Strangely fruity, with plums and dates/prunes actually being somewhat prominent. Underneath that there's a complimentary light roast coffee that really fits in well. There's a slight "dirty" aroma to it that I tend to pick up in brown ales as well. Doesn't SMELL like it's 8%, but it does smell very nice.

Taste/feel: Like the nose almost perfectly, but with a little more coffee, thankfully. Starts with plums and dates/prunes with some sweetness, before there's a really clean and pure coffee flavor with just a bit of bitterness. The finish is bittersweet, tasting of malt, light roast coffee, and dried fruit. The feel is silky, but with a great prickly carbonation at the same time that opens up the taste buds -- the mouthfeel may be the best part of this beer, and it's a pretty damn good beer already. I don't taste or feel the 8% at all on this... I feel like it could very well be 6% and I'd have no idea.

Very, very good... I didn't know what to expect from a craft beer from New Zealand, but I was pleasantly surprised, and would definitely buy this again. I don't remember what I paid for this, though... but still, it's good enough that I'd say it probably warrants a slight premium price. If you happen to see this around, give it a go.

    4.32/5 (+8.3% rDev)

    Cheers, all!

[IMG] Happy NBS, everyone! It's a beautiful beach day. The water temperature is close to 80 degrees. I lost track of time this afternoon but I really want to share my NBS review with you. This is Marbled Buffalo, a Rye Ale aged in bourbon barrels, brewed by Double Nickel Brewing in Pennsauken, New Jersey. Double Nickel is best known for its Vienna Lager but this Rye Ale and its BA Stout are well-regarded. This is a tremendous offering: a beautiful appearance, nice smell, and amazing taste. The best part is the subtle bourbon. You can really taste it but its delicate and only 8% ABV. I have to say, I'm blown away by this stuff and can't wait to try the BA Stout. I usually don't gush like this. I need to visit this brewery soon. Here's my review:

    4.42/5 rDev +1.8%
    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.5

Poured from 22 oz. bottle into pint glass. It pours virtually black but with a pretty, deep ruby hue when held to the sunlight, and two fingers plus of thick, fluffy head and lacing with excellent retention. It looks like a nitro pour; very much like Guinness on draught. It's very attractive in the glass. It smells of roasted malt, rye, vanilla, coconut, and subtle but discernible bourbon. The first taste I noticed is caramel, followed quickly by a very nice base of roasted malt, rye, and black pepper. It has a slight hop taste at the finish. What sets it apart, however, is the bourbon; you can taste it but it's delicate and subtle. It doesn't overpower and there is no alcohol burn. This ale is medium-bodied with a creamy, almost chewy mouthfeel. Its ABV of 8% is just right; it's substantive but very drinkable and without a strong alcohol burn. Overall, this is a superb Rye Beer. It is delicious and full of sensory pleasure. Quite an achievement. I'll seek it out again soon!

New beer, new brewery, new pizza dough.
The beer is pretty good, hoppy, dry, malt finish. I will try more from this brewery.
Can't say the same for the dough. Hard to work. Pic says everything. Going back to my old standby recipe, but I will say the flavor was pretty good, probably due to the live yeast starter.

It's hard to see them grow up and spend increasingly less time at home. But I'm glad we can be proud to watch them grow into adulthood!

It's been awhile since I last posted, and it looks like in the future I won't be able to post on THE greatest thread Beer Advocate has to offer as I much as I would like, but here goes today's new beer.
Today's new beer is from Singlecut which is local somewhat as I don't live in the city anymore. However the proximity to where I live allows fresh beer that is definitely new to me(except visiting a brewery). This bottle of beer was bottled on 8/24 so it as an amazing 4 days old.

    16.9oz bottle into Libbey tulip
Bottled on 8/24 so an amazing 4 days old!
L- dark gold, a bit hazy, with thin white soapy head dissipating into a ring
S- smell just explodes as i opened the bottle, strong peach aroma, pine, grapefruit, danky hoppiness as well
T- grapefruit followed by a mellow creaminess, there is loads of pine on the linger, with a danky finish only 130 IBUs can justify
F- medium bodied, creamy feel ,high carbonation, nice hop bite, hides alcohol well as all the Singlecut beers I've had do
O- definitely a solid IIPA but I don't think this is the best Singlecut IPA I've had even if this is the highest rated
Cheers to the new week BA and NBSers!

Things are always different than one may imagine "them" to turn out. My daughter is 34 and my son is 31. My wife and I never knew that they would like home as much as they do. My son lives a mile away and lives in her her old house, which he will be buying from her. He visits often, we eat together a good bit, and our interests are close to identical. She moved to Chapel Hill- an hour away- and we just finished up with an extended visit by the grandsons- 9 and 5. She misses this area, but moved for a nice job in Raleigh. We see both grown children often, mainly because my wife is awesome!

Good evening BA, just getting home from upta camp. Spent a nice weekend with the family, picked a bunch of fresh blackberries, and met up for a trade. Today's New brew comes fresh off the canning line over the weekend. The Alchemist Crusher. I expect nothing but hops, glorious hops, from Alchemist IPA'S.

Typically we describe look first, but you smell this brew long before you ever see it. With the first hiss of the tab the aroma of hops fills the room. Mango and citrus and pear, in a powerful over ripe fruit basket, outlined by flowers and kind of dank, and simply delicious.

The pour is a hazy golden orange, with a two finger bright white head, minimal lacing, which is expected at 9% ABV, though the head does have good retention.

The taste is a barrage of hops, a battering ram to the tongue in epic hop flavors. There must be a significant portion of the hop flavor spectrum in here, it's big on mangos and melons in the front mellowing into floral and herbal hops and the finishing with a bold but subdued resinous bitterness.

Mouthfeel is light and smooth with low carbonation. Alcohol is known but hidden. Finishes quite dry, which plays nicely with the bitterness.

"You've said nothing of malts though?" Quite right, if they're imparting any flavor I couldn't tell it, they're simply added as yeast food. You can't really knock the brew for it though, since it does tell you right on the can it's 'Oozing with hop flavor and aroma.'

It's a great hop head brew. If you're in the mood to be bludgeoned to death by hops, this is your beer. This is everything I wanted tonight, hops, glorious hops.

Well Hello NBS (not Late Night Edition for a change)

Thanks as always to Maria @utopiajane for the beautiful start.
And with my first contribution (of which I hope I will have a few today), I would like to thank our very own @SammyJaxxxx , the magnanimous New Jersey Beer Czar!!!

Pours a moderately hazy golden to orange. White and tight, the foam bursts northward. Smells citrusy in a gentle grapefruit direction, tropical highlighting melon, and finally a hint of bread malt. Flavor comes through with a stronger hand of grapefruit, then pivots in the direction of earthy tropical fruit, and finally a nuanced dank liquidy resin. Mouthfeel is full enough for me, and slick as well. Carton really puts out some consistent quality. Thanks again New Jersey Beer Czar!

All I gotta say is, "You had me at Carton...and El Dorado."

I had hoped that the serendipity that sometimes surrounds my shot at posting on this Sunday only symposium was sustained. The entry was strong, as was the suggestion to pick some up. Sadly, this Surly has sold me short.
Yes it is hoppy and its bitterness is sustained longer than some of the most epic notes ever played on a guitar but that is it. Cloudy gold clears as the head dissolves quickly not giving the lacing a fighting chance. It is a good IPA but only differentiated from all the other IPAs by its can art and a creative writing major's boastful prose.
