I know that some people may only think of Seattle when Washington beer is mentioned, but don't forget there are plenty of lesser known breweries outside of the city making great beer. Silver City had made several tasty sours recently, along with many other great beers. Propolis makes weird but different farmhouse ales made with handpicked herbs and I enjoyed their beer when I took a trip there. There are plenty I haven't been to or listed, but I feel they should deserve some recognition here. I'm not intending this as a rant, just to hope for increased awareness.

Bale Breaker isn't in Seattle, and they get plenty of well-deserved love around here.

After my upcoming visit to Bellingham, I'm sure I'll be sending love to even more non-Seattle breweries.

Living on past glories, I'm afraid. OP, lots of WA breweries get much love on these boards, it's just most posters here are Seattle area based, so that's what's right in front of them. I love Silver City. Skookum is one of my favorites. White Wall is a neat brewery too.

I don't think I ever encounter anti-Seattle brewery sentiment. Engine House No. 9, Bale Breaker, Propolis, Structures, Airways, Skookum, Aslan and hell even Powerhouse in Puyallup are all making great beers.

Is this because of The Visiting Seattle thread or something? That thread is about visiting the city, not the state. Thus, the focus on Seattle. And the majority of us are from the Seattle area.

I currently don't live in Seattle, but will soon when I transfer to UW this fall. I don't mean to sound curmudgeonly, as I do really like the breweries I've visited in Seattle. As I mentioned, I'm don't reside in Seattle so I view the WA beerscape a bit differently from others on this regional board.

I get what you are saying. The beer scene here can be a bit overwhelming. Brewers are constantly upgrading their concepts and gear and capacities and with new appreciators (such as yourself) checking out the scene daily, I don't think we have reached the tipping point yet. And I have been doing this for quite a few years.

Check out this site and get the app on your phone: http://washingtonbeer.com/

And that is just for the breweries. Pubs, bottle shops, growler fill stations, gas stations, laundromats, bookstores, bike shops....... you are not going to be very far from good beer.

Road trips will also take a new meaning.

I'm not sure what tipping point you are talking about, maybe over-saturation of the market? Also, to clarify, I live in Silverdale on the Kitsap Peninsula so it gets a bit lonely seeing people mostly talk about Seattle's breweries and not ones outside of the city. Since you mentioned road trips, I do take them now and then for the purpose of trying and buying new beers. I plan on stopping by Sound Brewery this week, as I haven't been there in months. I'll have to check out the app, thanks.

Just a handful of Non-Seattle area (for me, Everett to Tacoma is "Seattle area") breweries that get my seal of approval: Anacortes, Silver City, Flyers, Skookum, North Fork, Sound, Propolis, Farmstrong, Iron Goat, Wander, Bale Breaker, Boundary Bay, Kulshan, Port Townsend BC, Chuckanut, Structures, Aslan, Icicle, Old Schoolhouse, White Wall, Everybodys, and Selkirk Abbey (we've adopted them from Idaho).

"Increased awareness" for the outstanding breweries beyond King County is a double-edged sword. Like you, I think they deserve recognition and want them to grow and succeed. At the same time, (relative) secrets are not kept for long these days, and we may all like the hidden gems beyond the beaten path less insofar as they become more widely known. It's a dilemma...

Seattle, based on recent evidence, is well on its way to becoming Chicago. Ought we really expedite the process by which all of Washington becomes Illinois?

I see your point about the dilemma, it is quite a tough one. I'm not sure what you mean about Seattle becoming like Chicago. Does it have to do with hype and drawing massive crowds looking for "whales"? (although there are plenty of actual whales around Washington to see)

Do you mean to say we've become FIB's? Perish the thought ... FWB doesn't cut it. No vowel.

Me too. Try Rainy Daze and Valholl when you are up near Sound. Downtown Bremerton is blowing up with new breweries. Marina Market for your whale needs. Pint Defiance in Tacoma when you are heading over the bridge. Collins Pub is your best ferry walk up. Altstadt when you want your Teutonic fix.

Don't be lonely. Just remember there is no good beer here in Kitsap County...... suffer like the rest of us :-)

I know what he means - it's the recent growing trend of breweries willfully inviting shit shows and feeding the hype train by releasing limited highly sought after releases on Saturday mornings (instead of the old peaceful way of Thursday's when we could delightfully stroll in and have a pint and purchase bottles). Even after all the discussion on this forum and elsewhere, I still do not understand what advantage this gives the brewery or it's customers. Oh well, it is what it is...

Think your local breweries don't get mentioned enough? Well, talk'em up! Advocate for them. Got a beer that people in other parts of the state need to try? Work out a trade. You can even go the @beertunes route and blast shotgun volleys of beer boxes all over the site. That certainly put Bellingham's beer scene (besides Boundary Bay) on my radar, and gave me a decent opening for spreading a little Iron Goat gospel as well.

Old Schoolhouse was really good if you are up in Winthrop, for some reason... But also this weekend I was able to go to a couple places in Seattle I was quite happy with. But I was only in town for about a day.

Maybe it's a Welsh "W," which means "FWB" would be pronounced "foob," or perhaps "fyoob."
