Thank you for your insight regarding availability in Franconia and Germany in general. So you would really only expect to find it at specialty beer bars (like Abseits) or tied houses. I recall reading in Ron Pattinson's book on Southern German that Schlenkerla licenses their name and beers for the tavern in Nuernberg. I wonder if it could be found there?

What tavern in Nürnberg? There used to be a Schlenkerla restaurant, but it is an augustiner tied house now.

    @Lurchus

The Hol'ab Getränkemarkt chain sells Schlenkerla Märzen in it's stores. Their HQ is in Achim and they have quite a few outlets between Hannover and Bremen. I've never seen the Helles or the Bocks there though.

    And Weizen? And Fastenbier?
I mean thats basically what I was trying to get across- you can get Märzen in lots of parts of germany. The others, not so much.

That's the one! I wasn't aware it had changed over to an Augustiner house.

@patto1ro In case you are updating your books!

That the one near the Dürer Haus, with outdoor seating? When did it change, because I had a Schlenkerla Märzen there last SEPT (assuming we're talking of the same place)....

    Prosit!

We are talking about this place, right? http://augustiner-zur-schranke.de/
They do still have Schlenkerla Märzen vom Faß, but no other Schlenkerla beers, and well, the Schlenkerla Name is gone...
I remember Landbierparadies Nürnberg, for instance, not having ANY schlenkerla beers(but several other, less known, excellent smoked beers). But I'd guess you can get them at regular Getränkemärkte there...

Distributor picked up Benediktiner kegs, I couldn't resist the price of the 50L hefeweizen, so I picked one up for my kegerator, expecting it to arrive next week... has anyone tried this recently?

I quite enjoy their Hefeweizen here in Germany - always in stock at the Class 6.

This one just reinforced that I much more prefer a dark mahogany Märzen vs these pale Festbiers

Uhm, it's not a bavarian beer anymore. Its brewed in Hessen by Licher in "cooperation" with Ettaler.

It's not a bad beer though, by any means, but pretty average. The dark one is disappointing, but the pale is ok. But yeah, the thing with the name is kinda... bad and annoying. Were I live, it's the Hefeweizen you see the most in pubs now...

Depends on my mood, or the weather outside, but yeah -- the Amber Märzen is more my favorite too.

I should caveat my statement that when in the fest tent, I have zero preference!

@Lurchus you are correct - I stand corrected. Just looked at the cap, it was brewed in Lich.

Now that I think about it, it tastes a lot like the Licher hefeweizen (did they replace it with this beer?). It has a roasty element, like a blend of dunkeles & helles Hefeweizen. It's OK for my palate but I much prefer the pale helles Hefeweizen.

    Smart thinking...

FWIW -- Having a Paulaner Amber Märzen right now. About to hit the grill in our 80°F Midwest weather, so something lighter may be in order... if I have anything light at this point. :astonished:
