Going myself in October. I'm from there, but still ask myself this question everytime I visit. Dunno what it costs in AB, but Rochefort 10 is a great deal at the Liquor Marts compared to BC. PEG Beer seems to have finally started being able to brew, should have some first batches on soon I'd hope. Also Torque and Barn Hammer are the other new breweries up and running. Haven't had before, but for Winnipeg it's awesome they have more than 1 brewery now
As it works out I am there middle of October. Thanks on the tip on Rochefort, don't really drink many quads in a year anymore. If it was cheap Orvals that would be more exciting. BTW had an amazing private tour of Rochefort two years ago. Was thinking of checking out The Peg, we know their brewmaster Brian from when he was at Alley Kat. Any suggestions on tap rooms or restaurants would be appreciated. Beers! Mike
Oh ya they have Orval too. Quite a lot of Belgian stuff actually, and it's all cheaper than in BC, and usually well aged lol.
What he said. Rockfort 10 about $5.50, Orval $4.30, St Bernardus 12 $4.80. The decently priced Belgians keep me going. Can't say I've been impressed with Barnhammer or Torque yet, but having some options is nice. For food and a pint, I suggest The Grove on Stafford and Grosvenor; 16 taps, though none of which till be super exciting. If your there late in the week (weekend for sure) they'll have a half pints cask on, which is usually a dry hopped lil scrapper or bulldog amber. They only place with a big selection of craft beer is Barley Brothers which has two locations; they can be hit or miss, but you're pretty limited here. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Been kind of wondering about Barley Bros, the beer guy there was super excited and did some special orders for them of DdC, Charlevoix and Le Trou du Diable then he moved to Vancouver. Haven't heard from them in a long time.
The Forks Market has a Craft Beer and Wine Kiosk which has a good selection of all the local craft breweries. It was a little expensive but the atmosphere of the market makes up for it. The Yellow Dog Tavern and the Kings Head Pub both in the Exchange District also have good local Craft offerings and good pub food.
i'm in wpg for the Heritage classic. things are moving in the right direction. still a tough town for beer options.
I've only been to Barnhammer once so far but though their line-up was fantasic, really liked the Wit, White IPA and Double IPA.
