    Hey Kozel,

I'm moving to Edinburgh in the next 3 weeks. Any other musts for local beers in addition to the ones you've noted that I should try after I get there?

Hi LukeLeDuc, really depends what you're looking for.

Other local or localish and easily available brewers are,
Stewart, Caledonian, Innis & Gunn, Knops.

    Slightly further afield,

Broughton, Tryst, Kinneil, Harvieston, Eden, Traquair, Fallen, Williams Bros..plenty of choice.

Been drinking mostly cheapish stuff recently, as well as abstaining lots of days too. But I did have Dark Star's Hylder Blonde on cask which was lovely, on Tuesday, as well as a bottle of Kew Brewery's Pagoda Pale Ale No. 5 yesterday to mark the end of summer. Also lovely.

Thanks! This should offer plenty of exploration! Any recommendations for cask ales?

Again, depends what you're looking for, best places are probably...

    Guilford Arms,
    Bow Bar,
    Ushers,
    Holyrood 9A,
    Blue Blazer,
    The Hanging Bat,
    Stockbridge Tap,
Six Degrees North, tho' I haven't been in here yet as it's fairly new.

I don't live in Edinburgh, but I'm just a short train ride away. A local might be able to provide you with more information. Good luck.

Popped in to the Cask in Pimlico today and tried some of Dark Star's fantastic Green Hop IPA made with fresh British hops, so while it's still fuggles, goldings etc, it has a really intense freshness to it. It tasted like what picking hops in my dad's back garden smelled like.

Oh boy, oh boy, do I miss that beer. I mean, I miss all cask beer, but to borrow a phrase from Marquis I remember that beer in particular always "sang" on cask.

Aren't you the chappy that moved to South Korea?

    Good memory!
I did move to Korea but moved back home, to Dublin, after six months. Wasn't for me.

Oh no! I've got to admit though I felt like a Vietnam vet after three years there. I hated the culture and now I'm married to a Korean so I'm inextricably linked to the place. :-D Purely coincidental but one of my best mates met a Korean out in Australia and he married her yesterday too. I will never escape the smell of kimchi!

Hahahaha. To be honest, one of the few things about Korea that I genuinely miss is the kimchi. And the dwaeji gukbap. And any other form of gukbap -- the soups out there are INCREDIBLE. But I ended up being screwed over in two jobs I took, and the whole expat scene out there, in Busan, was like the land of the lost. Canadian guys in their forties bragging about how shitfaced they got on a Tuesday night, for example. It made me feel awful.

Some awesome beers over the weekend, highlights:
Evil Twin - Even More Jesus (liquid brownies)
Kernel - London Sour Damson (tasted amazing despite being a bit less carbonated than I would have liked)
Amager - Pride (Perfect example of what I want in an imperial stout).

Eclectic mix of beers at the weekend :

    Orval Orval
    Arbor Yakima Valley
    Binghams Outer Space Hoppy IPA
    Staggeringly Good Dawn Stealer
    Hofbrau Munchen Oktoberfestbier

Don't usually drink much bottom fermented beer but last was nice for a change. Orval stands on its own. Yakima Valley had for 6 months and the age produced a huge wall of hop aroma/taste, spectacular.

Continuing on a non-British beer trend. I scored a couple 6-packs of Stone Runination 2.0 and also bought a 6er of Paulaner Salvador double bock, so I've been slowly working my way through those at home. Not much to complain about really...

Thanks to your tip, I had this at Craft Beer Co today. I usually feel like the lack of carbonation hurts cask IPAs, but damn, this is the best cask IPA I've had...hands down. Amazing flavor.
BTW, where did you get the info on it being fuggles/EKG only? I saw a bottle from a previous version (2 years ago I believe) that said simcoe. I couldn't find any info on the beer on Dark Star's website.

I had that dark star beer a few years ago and it had target and simcoe in it from memory. very good it was too. So maybe they get whatever fresh hops they can lay their hands on, or change the type of hops each year?

I like cask conditioned IPAs as long as they aren't too strong - I don't think 7% cask IPAs work. Or have too much sweetness, for much the same reason, no carbonic bite to counter it

edit . just checked the other place and target and simcoe it is

Right I've not talked beer in a while
    So what have I supped?
Moors Amoor which didn't thrill me
    Dragon Stout that was competent

    The Aldi Octoberfest beers
Scharz & Helles had before and are very good
The rest the weisse surprised me as being my favourite the Marzen was a bit dull and the special pilsner wasn't very special but all worth giving a go.
Petrus aged red had cherry lips flavour.
Aguila which is a Columbian lager
& that's the best thing said about it.
    Victory vital session IPA
Whitstable Bay Red IPA suprisingly good
Marston's/Shipyard Rye IPA smells like a lovely Rye tastes like a dull bitter
Guinness Rye Pale, nice looking bottle, smells like spent matches, tastes like a watery wheat.
Robinson's/Maiden Red and Black porter horribly thin.

Tonight keeping it on the dark side with
    London Beer Factory Sayer's Stout
Two beers brewing Grey sky dark pale ale
Tsjeeses Reserva 2013 bourbon barrel aged

Oh, it just had "Fresh English Hops" on the pump clip and they were the first two examples to pop into my head. My point was, a great hoppy beer without the usual candidates, Mosaic, Citra, Galaxy, Centennial etc
