There's a small brewery here in Michigan (Cheboygan) that makes a Yuzu Pale Ale. It's tap only, so you have to seek it out and it's not especially easy to get where I live. Since they released it earlier this year, I've been curious to find it (and just missed out on a couple occasions!) since I hadn't heard of Yuzu fruit before, and since then I've seen there are a few Yuzu Ales out there listed on this site. So, who's had a Yuzu ale and what did you think? Is it worth seeking out? Does it bring anything to the table? Could it be the next grapefruit?
I really dig yuzu in beer, though I've only had two that I recall. The yuzu brought elements of lime and grapefruit, which was quite complimentary to the bitter hops. I was particularly fond of it when used with brett in Evil Twin's Femme Fatale Yuzu Pale. I've also had Temple Garden Yuzu Ale, which was good, but not as stunning as the Yuzu Pale. The biggest detractor for me was the price of these beers - though I doubt that had anything to do with the yuzu. The Yuzu Pale was a $14 bomber, which is a bit pricey for a 6.5% abv beer, but I attribute that price to the brettanomyces. The Temple Garden Yuzu was like a $7 12 oz. bottle - in tis case I'm sure it's because the beer was from Japan's Baird Brewing, but it wasn't as good as the Yuzu Pale anyway. It was also a 6.5% abv beer. If you're okay with the price, check out Evil Twin's Femme Fatale Sudachi Pale and their Femme Fatale Kabosu Pale - they, too, feature exotic citrus fruits and brett, with varying degrees of lime and grapefruit. For the record, the Yuzu was my fave of the three...
I just had an Off Color Yuzu Fierce last night. The Yuzu added a tart floral citrus quality that was such a natural addition in a Berliner Weiss like that.
I didn't even know a yuzu was a thing until I read this, let alone knowing people put it in beer. I get smart because of this website.
I didn't either, until I had Off Color Yuzu Fierce last year. The guy at the bottle shop gave me one, as I was leaving, when they first got it in, because of some other beers I had liked. Started drinking it when I got home, without reading the label. I thought Yuzu was the name of Off Color's mouse on their labels. : ))) I couldn't decide what I was tasting : lemon/grapefruit/lemon/grapefruit/lemon/grapefruit? Then I looked it up. : ) I really like the flavor of yuzu. : )
I learned it's a small citrus fruit native to East Asia. I looked it up too. It actually sounds like it wouldn't be half bad in an IPA. Cheers!
I order a Evil Twin Femme Fatale Yuzu Pale whenever I see it on tap. I really like that beer! I can’t specifically say it is because of the Yuzu since there is a lot going on with that beer (e.g., Brett produced flavors). Cheers!
This is a truly fantastic beer, the yuzu just makes sense in it! Locally, Insight Brewing makes a pale ale with yuzu they call Hell Chicken. Big fan of that one.
I really enjoyed the way the yuzu played with the Brett in Evil Twin Femme Fatale- the fruit seemed a really natural fit into that flavor profile. Yuzu Fierce, as mentioned above, is also quite good- the yuzu was another perfect addition to the flavor profile. It seems that yuzu is a pretty natural addition to the right kind of beer.
Had the Lips of Faith Yuzu Berliner Weisse a few years ago. It was very interesting but I don't remember it being that tart. I would really like to try it in a Pale. I will have to keep an eye out for those.
After having it, just guessing, I looked while at an Asian market. It was there, in bottled juice form. I didn't get it, not being very confident it would resemble the fresh flavor. Might be worth a try, to add to the pale of your choice. Oatsmobile? Already a touch lemony. Lakefront's gluten-free sorghum one might be another good target. The finish is a bright, lemony flavor. (Bought it without noticing exactly what it was.) Fresh, & I hadn't had any from them, so gave it a try.
I've had two so far. A while back was Westbrook Gozu and more recently Lanikai Rubbah Slippah. For me, Westbrook really set the standard high for me. Gozu was basically their already fantastic Gose, but with Yuzu juice. Still one of my favorites from there. The Lanikai Rubbah Slippah was pretty good, but the added hops seemed forced to me, kind of had a herbal/medicinal finish to it. I feel if they had left the strong hop profile out of it, it would have been a huge winner for me. I love that they are trying new and exciting things with local ingredients though.
I've had Off Color Yuzu Fierce and Westbrook Gozu. Both were awesome beers. Yuzu is a very tasty fruit. I'd love to see it in more, but I can't see it taking over for grapefruit mostly due to availability.
I tried this one from Mikkeller a few years ago and I thought it was pretty good: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/13307/89333/
