I brought back a ton of Heady from Vermont back in August and found that I actually prefer the 2-month old variety to fresh stuff. Because science.

I tried to grab some Nimbus over the weekend but couldn't find any at a couple stops. Does anyone know a place in the city (downtown/northside) that has it?

I found Nimbus at the Beer Cellar in Glen Ellyn once. The only other place near me that I know carries it is AH Binny's, and they're always sold out.

That's interesting, what do you prefer about it?

Just seems like the hop profile is more pronounced (earthier, grassy, dirt-like...what I first remembered Heady to be) once it was 6-8 weeks old.

I've only had it once, and it was relatively fresh. I wasn't blown away. Strange that I'm now feeling motivated to get less fresh Heady!

My bro is actually up in Vermont right now, so he may have a new mission...

    Looking for advice folks...

Going to Chicago (western burbs) this weekend. Are there any NEIPAs I should be on the look out for when I hit up Binnys? Seems like most of these beers don't last a day, but maybe there are a few that last a week or two.

Hubbard's Fresh IIPA V4 may still be on shelves in certain places; it doesn't have quite the cachet as some of these other ones. It looks like Mikerphone is dropping a new DIPA tomorrow or Thursday, although I doubt it'll stay on shelves until the weekend (just saying to keep an eye out just in case). Also not sure it'll be NE-style, but most of his are, so that's my assumption.

One other one that I'm hoping for is by Hop Butcher For the World. It's called Galaxy Bowl, and I believe they're dropping it in the next two days as well. It's brand new, so no one knows what to expect, but I've heard good things about their stuff (and they're White Sox fans), so I'm looking forward to giving them a shot.

BInny's Grand had a bunch Friday, but I don't know if they still have it. I'll be over there tomorrow, so I can check.

I swear, I feel like Grand is exclusively shopped by dudes who read (but don't comment) BA forums all day. It's the one place you can guarantee you'll have issues finding the big releases.

Seriously, see if you can get a 4-pack and "age" a couple. You may be surprised. Just don't do the same with Zombie Dust

I'd believe that. Although I don't think cumulus/stratus/nimbus count as big releases yet ... That hype train is still in the station.

Thank god. Cumulus, Fresh IIPA and Navaja are my current "love 'em and can get 'em in a pinch" go-tos.

I agree, or at least I think it stays excellent. Focal Banger was totally different though - it fell off to me whereas Heady didn't. Crusher also didn't.

If he's in Northern VT, I'd ask him to try. It's not that hard to find if you know where to look (there website tells where they drop it each day). I know you weren't blown away, but it sounds like you've had a lot more Chicago attempts at NE IPAs since then, and you may like it better or at least have those as fresh in mind comparisons. You said you love Navaja - I think they have some similarities, except Heady is a little less boozy to me.

Ugh, I had a zombie yesterday that was from late August. Can't believe the difference from day 1 to day 45 or so in this beer. No other beer goes from great to bad like that.

At least Zombie is arriving fresher these days. My Binny's typically has it a week old. Earlier this year, same Binny's would be getting three weeks after bottling.

Just had a Hubbard's Cave V4 and it was outstanding overall (pic posted on current WBAYDN thread) and the best representation of the NE STYLE thus far IMHO although I have yet to get my hands on Juicy.

Struck out on Nimbus today, though. Got one more in the fridge that I may need to crack open today...

Ardmore Liquors (western burns) had a lot of Hubbard's V4 still on Saturday. Juicy is the closest to the NE style in Chicago and I preferred this HC beer to the pair of Mikerphone SS I've had so far
