Hey guys, the wife and I are starting our trip at Houston Hobby airport tomorrow, and I'm having trouble figuring out how to get around down there.

We're going on a cruise out of the Port of Galveston on Sunday, but since there's nothing to do around there but Brews Brothers (which we will hit up), we decided to stay in Houston.

We were going to rent a car at the airport, drive around Houston all day hitting up places like Ginger Man, Flying Saucer, Anvil, Hay Merchant, etc., and then drive to Galveston and drop the car off at the port, but I guess because of hurricanes, all the rental places have pulled out of the area.

So now I have a hotel room in Houston and a cruise leaving from Galveston. Could you guys give me some suggestions on how to get around?

The Carnival shuttle is $15 per person from the airport to Galveston, and there's six of us ($90), so that's a little ridiculous.

What would a cab ride be? I assume less than that even though it's 50 miles away.

Any other ideas? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

ugh.. I love my town... well I live almost in between Houston and Galveston... but public transportation isn't our strength.

Don't forget to hit up Petrol Station.... my favorite.... though not as big as Hay Merchant.

I have no idea how much a taxi would run.. sorry. Maybe ask a taxi when you arrive at the airport how much it would be, so you'll know beforehand.

    Have fun!

I have no idea what hurricane they are talking about:confused: There should be no reason why you can't get a rent a car. I would at least call around to Enterprise. If I could get a rent a car in the middle of nowhere Galiano, LA during a tropical storm, you should be able to get on in Galveston with no storm. Try getting a car from Hobby, and just find a place to drop it off in Galveston.

Edit, I am sure that is what you tried. Just find it really hard to believe you can't get a car.

That's exactly what I tried. I spent two hours calling different rental companies. I can rent one at Hobby, but there are no drop off locations in Galveston. When I asked why, they said it was because that area gets hit with a lot of hurricanes, not because of one specific hurricane.

Just out of curiosity, I tried searching for cars on KAYAK, and did not get anything. It is ridiculous if you can't get one in Galveston. Sorry bout that...

    Yeah, crazy, right?

Btw, thanks for all your place reviews. They were a big part of how I planned what we're going to do in Houston before we get on the boat.

Is it totally out of the question to just stay in Galveston, without a rental car you can easily walk the strand (Brews Brothers is on the Strand) and find several nice shops and a few decent bars (Brews Brothers is exceptional)
