Sad news for the cherry stout lovers out there, but a testament to Bell's sticking to their recipes and not compromising the product.

From the Bell's official blog, 9/21/12:

COMSTOCK – Since it was first released in 1988, Bell’s Cherry Stout has always been brewed with 100-percent Montmorency cherry juice made from cherries grown in northern Michigan’s Traverse City region.
We are extremely proud of this deep connection to our home state.
This seasonal beer is released annually in October along with other stouts in our portfolio – Java Stout, Expedition Stout, Special Double Cream Stout and others. Unfortunately, that tradition will have to be put on hold this year.
Warm temperatures followed by multiple frosts earlier this year severely affected Michigan’s tart cherry crop to such an extent that unfortunately, there will be no new batches of Cherry Stout in 2012.
A small number of Cherry Stout kegs from 2011 will be released on a limited basis however.
While we do hope that a bountiful harvest will allow us to bring this beer back to our fall stout line-up next year, more importantly, we are hopeful that it will allow Michigan’s fruit growers to recover as well.

Boo hoo. That beer ages horribly IMO, so more 2011 kegs to go around

You know Marc, you're a good guy and I like you, but I am not a fan of you're opinion here. Love this beer with age on it. The vintage kegs that have been on tap over the years at the cafe have done nothing but impress me.

Never had a vintage cherry on tap, so I guess I can't make such a generalization. Out of a bottle, I did not care of it. Sweetness really comes forward and it's almost cloying and syrupy...maybe improper storage, etc. Any word on the Eccentric Party yet Kevin?

From what I have had on tap the malt rounds in to form, you get a chocolaty, tart cherry goodness in the glass.

No word on Eccentic day yet. It will probably land on Dec 7 or the 14th. We probably got at least a month or so before an announcement. If you are making the trip again and need a couch to crash on let me know.

Praying for the 7th, so I can do the whole Eccentric Party/4 Elf duo again, which worked out well. I will definitely let you know if I'm going to make it for the party.

Put me on the list of people who really like this polarizing beer.

It will be missed. Dang, it kind of weakens the reason for my annual pilgrimage in March out to Phoenix. . . (Brewers/Cubs game, Marquette tailgate, Hopslam & Cherry Stout).

Wasn't really a fan anyway. At least Bell's can use their resources on something else.

From having tried half a dozen Bells beers, it was the one that I liked the least. But, I generally only have access to stuff from Bells maybe twice a year when trips are made to PA. I can imagine those who have regular access to their offerings would be more heart broken over Expedition, Porter and other obvious choices.

    And then? :stuck_out_tongue:

I like shit and garbage. Not sure about the other eloquent descriptor you gave it. :grinning:

To each his own, I guess. I've always enjoyed 1 or 2 per year.

I had the same feeling on it myself as well. Honestly didn't have much love for the Double Cream Stout out of the bottle either. I just hope this isn't a trend with me on Bells' Stouts since I've yet to have an Expedition or Kalamazoo.

Why all the hate for the Cherry Stout? I thought it was pretty damn tasty, one of those beers I drink if I want dessert for sure. Bummer it's not going to be released this year though, it was cool of them to send their love to the fruit farmers. I wonder how the price of MI cherries will be affected?

Nostalgia: I am going back 16-17 years, Great Taste of the Midwest (in Madison, WI). Bell's would tap a keg of cherry stout, and people would go freaking nuts. Sort of a harbinger of where craft beer was going. It was fun, however.

I've been a fan of Cherry Stout in the past, and this news does sadden me a bit. On a side note, I know that many fruit crops all over the country have been affected by the weather this year, and other breweries will not be releasing certain beers this season because of it as well.
