Because most breweries use there own way of purging O2 from growlers. Depending on their setup they wont fill wide mouth or narrow mouth growlers. Example: OH will not fill narrow mouth growlers. Also, glass growlers are much cheaper.

These stainless steel growlers neither follow regular or narrow mouth growler dimensions.

I get the mouth size, but what do you mean by purging the O2? I don't think I've seen any breweries that do anything special other than do their best to fill it to the top (including Tired Hands). Though I know some places are now getting those growler machines that supposedly pull all the air out but I haven't seen any breweries yet that have them. Also, I could be wrong, but I would think that unless you are doing something where you're purging the O2 out, a wider mouth would be better because it would make it easier to fill all the way to the top.

Actually Tired Hands has a CO2 line that they use to purge the empty growlers they sell. So if you purchase a new growler at Tired Hands it has been pre-purged of air. If you are getting a growler that you brought refilled that is a different story. If they aren't too busy maybe you could request that the bartender purge your growler before they fill it for you?

    Cheers!

I guess I don't see the point of that as plenty of air will be getting in while they fill it.

As we all know oxidation is really bad hoppy beers. Most places like TH, Treehouse, Trillium, OH, Hill Farmstead all purge O2. Not sure why stainless steel growler manufactures use standard growler dimensions.

You might not see the point but purging O2 elongates shelf life of growlered beer and of course limits oxidation.

As was pointed out though, Tired Hands only does it when you buy a new growler. I know I've had many growler fills at the Fermentaria and they have never done anything but fill it with the beer.

Maybe next time you could request a CO2 purge if they aren't too busy? The worst case situation is that they will say no.

    Cheers!

P.S. If your intention is to consume the growler when you get home then having them purge the growler is a mute point.

Pertaining to growlers, I'm all for a CO2 blanket but at the same time there are 2 issues with that that I'd like to point out:

1- IMHO growlers are not for saving. It'd be nice if they did Crowlers, but they don't. If you want to ship it across the country, great, but that's not really what growlers are intended for. If you take it home and put it in the fridge it should be good for at least a week or two, and even a day later if you open it and seal it right back up (not the same that it was, but close - kind of like day old pizza

2 - The whole CO2 blanket thing is kind of a myth in such a small container, and with no time for it to settle. If you're filling a 15 bbl bright tank with CO2 before you rack onto it that's one thing, but when you dump CO2 into a growler with a small outlet there's a mixing of gas that needs time to allow the gases to separate (yes, I know that CO2 is heavier than air, and that air is 78% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, and the remainder argon, carbon, neon, etc.) - and that just doesn't happen when filling growlers. Even at growler stations, are they doing a double or triple pre-evac?

So, it would be nice, but I don't blame them for just filling growlers straight up.

I'm just telling you what I have experienced. Now it's possible every time I've ever had a growler filled they were too busy to purge the O2, but I've watched them most or all times and they took it right to the tap. I think once or twice I saw them do the upside down water rinse (which I'm not a fan of).

Coffee Void is ridiculously good. would have bought multiple growlers if they would be doing them.

instead, I settled for BB Void

Kind of ironic don't you think? Since everyone always bitches about TH growlers not holding carb. for more than a few days...

I've bought a growler at night and opened it the next day to find it flat. If that's bitching then so be it but other breweries handle growlers better than TH. I have no idea what the problem is but have to at least share my experience.

I love the coffee Only Void too. Opened a can last night and it was as great as the first batch. I also had an old OV and I don't think it changed much over almost a year. Which is good because there was nothing wrong with it! Still sweet and very sticky.
