Hello, I'm new to the world of home brewing and I'm wondering if a BPA free plastic container that's normally used to contain purified water is fit for fermentation of alcohol. I'm mainly concerned about the leaching of plastic compounds into the alcohol, is this a valid concern? Should I just shell out the money to buy a glass car boy?

A lot of us use plastic for primary fermentation. Of course only plastic that is BPA free. Compared to glass it has its advantages and disadvantages, and after weighing them I prefer plastic.

Same, after using glass carboys and having to figure out how to clean messes out of the damn things, I really like using the big mouth bubblers with valve on the front. Super easy to get gravity readings, transfer and add hops.

I've fermented beer in plastic buckets for 25 years and have had no adverse health effects, except for the ear that grew under my chin. Seriously, food grade plastic buckets are very much better than the ones I started with so many years ago.

I do not personally recommend glass carboys. I'm just not into the safety risk of handling them.
The only thing you need is a good cleaning program for handling plastic.
    i.e. PBW. Sani. Bleach.
That's all you need for years of safe use out of them.

The fact that you can get down into a plastic bucket and really scrub the hell out of it helps too. Sanitizing with boiling water is another thing you can do with a plastic bucket that is a bit 'risky' with glass

I use and love buckets... Especially with a spigot added at the bottom for easy transfers to the keg after fermentation is done. My carboy just collects dust for the most part!

Easy to handle and clean, plus the spigot... Win win win!
