Just curious... Where did you and your brothet buy yours? I got mine from the liquor junction in Winchester.

Because hop harvest is in the fall. They do release Born Again Yesterday in the summer though.

Fresh hop beers can't be made in time for the summer season. The hops in Yakima (where the hops in BY are grown) aren't ready for harvest until late summer/early fall and the majority of the ones in BY are late harvest hops.

I bought my hazy/fruity beers at Ball Square Fine Wines in Somerville. My brother purchased the clearer beers at Redstone Liquors.

See redstones is interesting because they would be hit by the same truck as liquor junction. Must be a batch thing.

Hmm, that is interesting. Perhaps the Northshore received one batch, Somerville/Cambridge another?

The bigger question is, why is there such a difference between the batches? Same bottling date.

I split one of the "hazy" ones I had with my brother yesterday, there's a very noticeable appearance/flavor difference. I have a bottle left of each that I'll have this weekend again too.

I know you said you didn't care either way and enjoyed your "less hazy" Born Yesterday. But I kind of hyped this beer up for my brother, and when he took his first sip he said something along the lines of, "You're not going to believe this, but I think this beer is just ok." He's more of a Nightshift Whirlpool/Trillium/Bissell Brothers type of guy.

I am that type of guy as well. I just judge lagunitas compared to lagunitas. This and sumptin extra are excellent beers. Can't say I wouldn't be interested to try the different batch of this beer though. But for 10.99 and fresh its a top tier six pack in the MA graveyard.

I had some that were purchased in MD over the weekend as well as some that I purchased in VA, there was a very slight but noticeable difference in taste and aroma. The hops seemed to have faded a little more in the MD bottles. My bottles (VA) were cold when I bought them and have been cold ever since, maybe the MD bottles were stored at room temp for a while?

I've had Jai Alai a few times over the years, from memory I don't find them to be similar at all. I'd say Jai Alai is an average IPA, and BY is a stunning beer.

Is there anything magical about fresh hops that cannot be duplicated using alternative hop methods that would prevent this beer from say being a quarterly release? I guess a question for an experienced home Brewer.

Dale, the best that I can say is that wet hops used in brewing provides a differing quality vs. dried hops. I have read where somebody used the analogy of cooking with fresh herbs vs. dried herbs. For example if you had a favorite dish which featured basil, if you cooked it once with fresh basil and a second time with dried basil you would notice the difference,

Sierra Nevada utilizes “farm-distilled hop oil” in brewing Hop Hunter. This distilled hop oil is produced from fresh (wet) hops. You can read more here: http://draftmag.com/sierra-nevada-hop-hunter-oil-ipa/

Would Lagunitas Born Yesterday taste the same if it was brewed using farm-distilled hop oil instead of the actual wet hop cones? Hmm?

    Cheers!

The long printed coding typically found near the base of beer bottles are the glass bottle manufactures codes, not the brewery's bottling dates. Such codes exist on all the bottles used by US brewers, regardless of the bottle manufacturer.

Lagunitas bottles (at least, the ones I get on the east coast) are made by a company that uses an upside omega as their "mark" - which I don't recognize off-hand.

Most US beer bottles are made by Owens-Illinois which uses a O-I symbol, or by Anchor Glass, which uses a stylized "V anchor" shape. The bottler's marks are embossed around the base of bottles, along with dots and, usually, a two digit "year" of manufacture (i.e., US bottles made this year typically have a "16" embossed on them) along with other digits.

If it is possible to brew this style of beer with oil , pellets whatever I think it would be an incredible and say perhaps a quarterly release. Perhaps a bit different, but Brewers make great IPAs year round right now, the trick was rapid distro. And Brewers being copy cats might notice the quality of the product, their ability to distribute it very quickly, and how well recieved it has been by customers. A trend I'd love to see.

Dale, I posted a similar sentiment in my post:

“There has been some discussion on BA whether a larger craft brewery (Lagunitas is distributed to most states) could produce a so called “NE” style beer and make it available on a widely distributed basis. This might be a daunting task for an everyday beer (i.e., available year round) but IMO Lagunitas has accomplished this for this special release beer. Since this specific beer features fresh (wet) hops it can only be a once a year beer but perhaps a very similar beer could be developed using non-fresh hops and produced periodically (akin to a periodic schedule like Stone Enjoy By)?”

I also tagged Greg Koch (Stone), Tony Magee (Lagunitas), and Bill Manley (Sierra Nevada) on my post with the hope they make consider making a similar beer to this year’s Born Yesterday on a periodic basis.

    Cheers!

The sixer I got from Wegman's in Burlington wasn't very hazy but still tasted good. Enjoyed it more than the fresh Sucks I had last week.

Amazing beer. One of the better hoppy beers I've had, and I've had Treehouse, Trillium, Alchemist etc.

    So damn drinkable!

Mine was also quite hazy. Not TH, Trill levels though. *no filters on pic below
