Thanks @cavedave for the fantastic kickoff again. Going to keep it short today since yesterday was an epic beer day due to being home alone and now everyone's back so I'm going to grill up some meat. about 50 balmy degrees here I'll take it. Should be great Supermoon viewing weather for the next 2 nights.
My first time trying a "milkshake" ale. I guess they add milk sugar (lactose?). Sounds gimmicky but I'm willing to try anything once.
Urban Family Brewing Limesicle Milkshake Ale.
Pours a slightly cloudy pale yellow with a massive white cloud like head that leaves lots of lacing as it very slowly recedes. Looks really nice.
Huge aroma of lime, tangerines and lemon and a bit of tropical notes with a nice barnyard funk, hay and fresh cut grass. some spice also.
Taste is same lime with citrus. A bit of sweetness but it seems like it's from malt not sugars. Nice funky yeast with a white pepper spice. Almost lager like. Not at all what I expected - in a good way.
Light in body. Finishes crisp and clean with good carbonation and a little coating of lime zest on the tongue.
Pleasantly surprised with this one. Not heavy like I expected. Well crafted nice and clean with some yeast complexity that ties it all together and keeps it interesting. This would be a great warm weather beer. And one I'd recommend for something to take your palette on a different type ride.
And for NewOldVinylSunday I'm going with this great XTC song from Black Sea.
After this election of been thinking of this alot. Have a great week and as always thanks for taking the time.

For the hell of it I looked up that 5 Beans you had on the My Fitness Pal app. They had a number of Sixpoint brews listed, but not that particular one. 3 Beans was in there, however, at 300 calories, which seems a close enough substitute.

My first and probably only NBS beer. I got my chores done for the day and am now sitting down for a rest.

This beer has been a HUGE want for me. It was a new beer released last year but couldn't find it or trade for it.....until this year. I'm a HUGE hazelnut fan. Loved Frangelic Mountain Stout from Founders and Rogue's Hazelnut Brown. Looking forward to this one big time.

Pours a deep, dark almost black with a tan, long lasting head. Good lacing present. The nose is amazing. Strong amounts of hazelnuts, sweet coffee, vanilla and chocolate, I feel like there is cinnamon dolce and caramel.
Yes! Hazelnut syrup, it doesn't overpower and balances well, non bitter coffee, chocolate and vanilla, some spice. The bourbon barrel seems overpowered but I don't care, give me that hazelnut! So big and chewy, mouthfeel is where I want a big stout to be. It lives up to my personal hype. Love it.

Low 16's? That's awesome! I feel your pain with the beer and running thing. My diet has become quite sloppy the past year or so and it's starting to come back to haunt me. I'm no spring chicken and went through issues with multiple meniscus tears earlier this year which has compounded things. I limit myself to 5k's and my time is minute slower than where I was 18 months ago. Although I still compete and occasionally win/place in my age group, I'm itching to get serious again.

I recently bought a Garmin 235 and I'm quite pleased with it. The Fenix 3 HR is the top of the line and can be used for swimming as well.

Cheers and best wishes in your future training. My hunch is you'll do very well!

Another new brew tonight, compliments of @mmorris15, Orono Brewing Company Kablam! IPA.

Pour is a clear light copper with a two finger head, nice retention and lacing. Good classic IPA look.

Aroma is slightly floral with notes of grapefruit and mango. There's some toasty biscuity malt in there too.

Taste is similar to the nose, floral upfront and then citursy, and light biscuity malts with subdued grapefruit bitterness on the finish.

The mouthfeel is light and a little thin with a crisp bite of carbonation.

Overall it's a laid back IPA, simple and well made. It doesn't smack you in the face with hops or bitterness, but it's still got flavor and a nice light aroma. I wouldn't call it a seek it out brew, but try it if you find it.

    Cheers!

Wasn't going to participate this week because my only new beer in the fridge was a 750 mL, 10.3% monster... but then my roommate came home just in the nick of time to provide some assistance in imbibing this one!

    Happy New American Quad Sunday!

Rockingham Brewing Co. Silence of the Hams Belgian-style Quadrupel

Pours a very nice deep mahogany color that appears pretty much dark brown/38 SRM if it's not held up to the light. Head builds up as a fairly tall and very retentive beige-like color with some surprisingly solid, tiered lace and a very creamy and frothy surface tension. Lots of tiny bubbles rushing up to the surface to bolster the luxurious foamy cap, even after 10 minutes in my glass! Well-built stuff here, so far.

Nose is light prune, fig and cocoa powder with some dark candi sugar notes, blackstrap molasses and even some dark treacle as well. Semi-spicy with a definite nutmeg and clove component, likely from the yeast. At times, the yeast also comes off a bit earthy and musty.

Flavor is sort of heavy on anise/licorice notes that I didn't really pick up in the nose, which is interesting. As expected, this is mostly redolent of dark stone fruit and brown sugar with some slight notes of brown bread and molasses, but there are notes of doughy yeast as well as horehound and other herbs in there as well. This has a really firm and unexpected bitterness which somewhat distracts towards the finish. Kind of a steely, leafy hop character that closes out each sip rather randomly. Drinks a bit uneven due to this. Feel is on the thicker and heavier side of medium, with a buffering carbonation and not much noticeable alcohol. This is pulling in some weird directions, and may be one of the first Rockingham beers I haven't been too impressed by.

This was only released recently but was apparently bottled in June, so it seems like the brewery held these bottles to allow for a defined bottle conditioning. Something about the bitter herbal flavor in this reminds me a lot of a digestif liqueur, and even though I typically enjoy those for what they are, that kind of flavor in what should have been a sweet, smooth and boozy quad just isn't working for me. Ah well!

I haven't had it right off of the line fresh, but I have had it under 2 weeks fresh. The oak has more vanilla and dill to it, like the can says, than an oak taste you would get from say, an oak barrel aged beer. I love this beer and my local ABC had a release on Saturday, of course I had to work, and headed over on my lunch break only to have the manager tell me they only got 2 cases this time and sold out within the first 1/2 hour of opening.:slight_frown: So I missed out on it this time.

Cheers, and thanks dude. The thing is, I ran 16:09 my freshmen year of college and 16:03 my senior year. That was me training with a group of 10 dudes who wanted to be better. Now I'm fighting that battle alone. Haha.

I'm sorry to hear about your injuries. Hopefully things get better soon! Injuries are rough in any sport, but something like 60% of runners are out every year. I'm pretty fortunate in that my only injuries have been IT band trouble. Sitting at a desk 40 hours a week is rough on that though. I just ordered a sit/stand station to help fight that. It should be here tomorrow.

Glad to hear you like your 235! You'd recommend it? Two of my friends and a coach I work with have the Fenix 3. It's so tempting, but I can get the full 735XT bundle for less then the Fenix 3 Sapphire. And the 735XT is a more appropriate size watch for me to wear every day (although that Fenix is damn tempting).

Greetings All from the Great Northwest, where we spend a showery gray day awaiting the Seahawks in the Sunday night game.

Today we have Toro Red from Breakside Brewing in Portland Oregon.
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22843/140340/

A decent red ale, but the chili peppers give it a bit more heat than is necessary.

So, tonight the re-match of SuperBowl 49. Guessing the Seahawks won't try a pass play on the goal line with the game in the balance. Or....?

    Until next time,

    Happy Trails!

    Happy New Beer Sunday all.

This week my new beer is a hybrid style grisette/pale ale from Trillium, brewed with spelt and rye, brettanomyces, and dry-hopped with Motueka hops.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30654/248290/

This beer pours a cloudy hazy pale straw yellow with a creamy frothy white foam head that sticks around for a while. The second pour didn't produce much head and the rest of the beer had little to no head or lacing.

The aroma brings bright tart citrus notes of lemon, lime, some tart oranges, with funky brett barnyard notes, peppercorns, toasted hay, mild vanilla, malty grain, rye spice, some fruity tropical notes of pineapple and yellow mango, with earthy herbal grassy pine hops.

The taste is well balanced with bright citrus, brett, malt, and earthy hops. Tart notes of lemon, orange and lime jump out with barnyard brett notes, funky peppercorn, toasted hay, mild vanilla, big malty grain, rye spice, some slight tropical mango and pineapple notes, with earthy herbal grassy pine. The spelt works magic on the palate as it lingers with it's bready grain taste combined with pilsner malt and a touch of rye. The tart/sour and citrus notes aren't overpowering, nor is the brett funk or the hops. Everything works well together creating an immensely refreshing, tart, citrusy, hoppy and well balanced spelt grisette pale ale.

The feel is smooth, slightly puckering, medium bodied, creamy with moderate carbonation. It is crisp going down and not too prickly. In the end a very easy drinker.

Overall, this is a great and unique beer. I'm not too familiar with Motueka hops and have only had 1 or 2 grisettes, and this one is doing wonders. Not too much saison or Belgian yeast, more tart citrus and brett with big malty bready grain notes and a melange of hop aromas from the Sterling and Motueka. A crisp and refreshing brew that is easy going down and tasty enough to have you wanting more. Trillium does it again, not that this is surprising to me. Really nice and interesting stuff.

    Cheers all, and Happy NBS!

Only one more for the evening, I'm fairly certain (this time). I may have saved the best - and certainly the biggest - for last.

    Oskar Blues Barrel-Aged Ten-Fidy

Not just the biggest; definitely the best! I don't normally do this, but I'm simply going to cut and paste my review, as I don't want to give this fantastic beer short shrift.

"Here it is: one of the archetypal stouts, first in tanks, then in barrels, and finally in cans. No, wait: finally in my mouth.

From the pour, it is the dark black motor oil you'd expect from Ten-Fidy. The dark brown head is of prodigious size, with excellent retention - both well above par for a barrel aged stout. The head slowly slides down the sides of the glass, leaving behind plenty of lacing. Honestly, I'm fairly certain I've never seen a better appearance on a barrel aged stout.

Sharp and boozy bourbon is readily apparent on the nose, but that is quickly followed by the strong roast familiar to Ten-Fidy fans. Coconut, red grapes, oak, coffee; these all appear in no particular order. The more it sits, the better it smells, with notes of chocolate and pecans starting to come through.

All the flavors kind of muddle together on the palate, but it's a beautiful chaos. Barest hint of banana from the yeast; tons of chocolate and a bit of dark roast coffee from the malt, along with brown sugar and toffee; the barest touch of char; and yes, of course, plenty of bourbon bite up front, carrying oak and vanilla, and a strong bourbon finish, leaning toward coconut.

While this is (not unexpectedly) hotter in the mouth than its regular counterpart, it is no less thick and smooth. Despite the heat, you can really savor and even chew on this brew, with very little lingering heat.

I don't know that this is the best-tasting BBA stout I've ever had. I do know that it is nearly without peer in its category in terms of mouthfeel and appearance; only BCBS and Parabola can even compare. Not unexpectedly, this reminds me very much of a BBA version of Founders Imperial Stout.

Do I honestly like this beer better than BCBS? I'm leaning toward...maybe. It's easily the best BBA stout I've had in what seems like ages; its overall package is something to be reckoned with. This is a beer I wish I had a good half dozen to visit and revisit and even age, to truly gain an appreciation for it. It's a different beast than BCBS; perhaps not quite as good in some respects, but easily its superior in others."

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2681/252745/?ba=Roguer#review
    4.62 / +2.9%

For comparison, here is my first review of BCBS, nearly three years ago:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1146/10672/?ba=Roguer#review
    4.70 / +4.4%

I've long considered BCBS the benchmark in the BBA imperial stout genre (Parabola garnered a 4.57 from me). Similarly, I think the benchmark imperial stouts (non-BBA category) are Founders Imperial Stout, Ten-Fidy, and Speedway Stout (yes, I know the last of those three is a coffee stout).

This brew takes one of those benchmark stouts and meets, perhaps even exceeds, all expectations. By a mile, the best beer I've had today, and I'm very glad I tried it (and very sad I have only one!). It underscores how the BBA Unearthed I tried yesterday - which I acutely, I believe, compared to Dragon's Milk - really isn't up to snuff with the best of the best, not by a mile.

    Cheers, NBS!

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Thanks to @cavedave for getting us started off this morning. I had an extended weekend with Veterans day which was nice. Not much going on here otherwise, got some more new beers this weekend and did my 4800th beer last week.

    New Beers:

This was really delicious. December 2013 dated. No head or lacing. Aromas and flavors of big wood/peat smoke, salt, bacon, leather, caramel, chocolate, cocoa, toffee, toasted brown bread, and light coffee/nutty malts; with some light dark fruit and herbal/peppery hops. Light herbal/roast/smokey bitterness on the finish. Medium-full bodied; very creamy and a bit slick/silky in the mouthfeel. Light sticky/chalky roast, and a bit of roasted dryness. Zero warming ABV. This is really easy drinking, despite the minimal carbonation. Very intensely smokey and peaty, but has a nice complex malt backbone. Was expecting it to be a bit more roasty when I read it was a stout; but perhaps that would clash too much with the huge level of smoke in this one. Overall this was pretty great. 3.97
    [IMG]

This was great stuff! Aromas and flavors of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, lemon/orange peel, citrus rind, light pepper, and pine hops; with moderate caramel, brown sugar, and lightly toasted bread malt; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Good sized pine/rind/spicy bitterness on the finish. Medium-plus bodied; balanced sticky/resins and malt creaminess in the mouthfeel. A touch slick. Intense increasing resin dryness, but no lingering hop astringency at all! Minimal warming ABV for 9%. Wow, big fan of this one. Canned 2.5 weeks ago. Hops are super vibrant and pretty juicy. Nice malt backbone, but not too sweet. Columbus, Simcoe, Centennial, and Cascade hops. I love the C hops any day of the week. Simcoe adds a nice underlying tropical vibe to a very intense citrus/piney hop flavor party. 4
    [IMG]

Excellent Brett wild ale! Aromas and flavors of tart lemon, lime, orange zest, pineapple, peach, mango, melon, papaya, white grape, oak, white pepper, hay, floral, and light leathery funk; with some moderate wheat/crackery malts. Touch of coconut and vanilla from the barrels. Nice moderately tart finish with some brett/tannic oak spice. Medium bodied; balanced acidity and grainy malts in the mouthfeel. Lightly tannic. Crisp and moderately dry finish. Not as sour as I was expecting(standpoint of the Central Coast Saison), but it is pleasantly tart and extremely refreshing! Great Brett complexity all around. Very vibrant. 4.1
    [IMG]

Cheers, have a good night NBS!

The 235 was a good value and decision for me. I agree the Fenix 3 is rather large for everyday wear and probably was a reason I purchased the 235. I know a couple of people however that love them and wear them daily. I guess its something you can get used to with time? Cheers!

It's not that I disliked it, I just thought the one flavor was a little strong. It actually evened out a little bit near the bottom of the glass, and subsequently became more enjoyabe. A little more vanilla and I guess I could see the dill aspect (which I think comes to me more as a coconut/grass note) with the added warmth.
