Sort of off topic, do you think they would be more lenient (give your stuff back instead of confiscate it) if you just played dumb if they found beer instead of obviously trying to deceive them?

Not directed at you, just a question in general.

Good question, no clue about that. I usually only use my label if it's sloshy, which isn't that often.

sloshing has never been a problem when delivering to my work because me & the Fedex guy always talk random stuff, lately college ball. i've yet to meet the Fedex driver that delivers to my house as i've yet to schedule a home pick-up. if it's packed solid it should be more than fine & make it safe, cheers!

its a bit of ease of mind to simply throw three pennies in an empty coke can and tape the hole. Doesnt sound like any thing is broken, and you dont hear any sloshing.

I had thought about using this meathod but was nervous that the word "oil" would possibly have them pursue something as being hazardous then them open the package and see me beers

Yup. My marinades are expected to make a sloshing noise. That said, they usually don't 'cause of the way I pack.

Well it was picked up from the shop and is now at one of the FedEx hubs. Let's hope it continues to its destination.

I'm still trying to figure out if it is better to try to deceive them or just go with it. I know personally I'd let someone slide if they used the "I didn't know I couldn't do that" defense instead of trying to use subterfuge on me.

I have a fictious business name that has maple in it and I ship from Vermont. It seems to be working well so far with UPS.

Along the tape seam, slice a couple of slits. Feed in a handful or so of rice. Move the box to see if the rice sound dominates the gurgling. Repeat as needed. Reseal.

I've only sent maybe 2 or 3 boxes as I am pretty new to trading. All of them have been horizontal and I have also heard some sloshing. I was worried as well but like someone mentioned above I figure it's pretty loud in a processing site so I wouldn't think anyone but the actual driver would hear it, if anyone.
I always feel like it's so much louder than it really is.

Could just put the label on the side of the box so the label makes the beers seem vertical....just a thought. But I have sent many boxes with some sloshing and never had a problem.

It's been through several hubs now and is still en route so I think I'm good. Now I just need to avoid a nosey delivery driver.

I think it's just something we have to deal with. To agree with another poster, pennies and rice sound like something in the box broke, so it's a toss up if they want to check for that or the sloshing sound if you don't include pennies and rice. I just sent out my last planned trade for a long time, so hopefully this isn't the first time ill get burned. Can't hear any sloshing though, since it's mostly growlers filled to the brim. Regardless of how you pack the box, I think with that many bottles they're going to notice it unless the box stays right side up the whole time and you pack vertically.

I usually ship heady cans upright, last time I put them on their side and I heard them sloshing around when I took them out of the car before heading into FedEx. I walked in super slow motion with my arms extended outward like I was on a bomb detonation squad and carrying a live bomb. I even reached over the counter and set it on the scale myself. I was glad when I tracked it and saw delivered.

Take an empty aspirin bottle and throw some screws in it and tell them you're shipping some hardware, tools, supplies ect.

okay, i run a pack-and-ship store, so here are a couple things: we know when you're shipping liquid 99.9% of the time- even a really well-packed box has that little shift, and the squeak of a styrofoam shipper is unmistakable. rice/pennies/whatever only draw attention to this and make me wonder what you're trying to hide (don't worry- if it's beer, i repack it to my higher standards). if it's pre-paid, don't be a dick, because if something bad happens to that box, it's not on the store to do anything about it, and if it's not, don't try to get too clever about the contents- a regional soda or specialty (cider, hot sauce, etc) is most believable, and you can say, "oh, my friend moved away and misses this stuff" if for some reason the clerk is chatty or nosy. generally speaking, though, most of us aren't gonna care unless you're a jerk.

also, i'm happy to send examples of my stellar packaging to interested parties.

Lol. Genius. My new favorite, surpassing a previous trader that labelled a package "Snow Globes"

I love the regular chick I do all my drip offs with. She's super fast and accurate and would Never ask what I'm shipping as others would. I've always had a little paranoia about the sloshing noise. I just don't ever want to possibly put myself and fellow trader in a shitty situation. So I've come to make it a little entertaining to disguise the noise, always outdoing myself. I've used handful of cloaking techniques such as: pennies or screws in plastic Easter eggs to Christmas type jingle bells in a shot glass. I Dave bottlecaps and those are always a good rattler/cover. The key to making a good noise disguise is have whatever rattles orange noise closest to the actual box, as it resonates through the cardboard and tends to make more noise than the sloshing.

Hope some of that jibber jabber helps or entertains. Cheers!

Some of you guys get pretty paranoid I must say. The only time I go over the top with descriptions and such, is when I am shipping through customs. Even then I don't list it as a liquid, just collectible glassware. Always done through Fedex, shipping label secured myself and good to go. I just walk in and drop it off, don't even necessarily have to speak to anyone, and by the time they so much as pick up the box I am out the door. I have never had a single issue with this.

The last box I dropped off was pretty big (almost a case of 12oz beers in there) and though very well packaged, there was some serious sloshing noise. Still, no questions and no problems. Maybe I just get lucky, but I tend to think that Chicago Fedex locations are too busy and have more important things to worry about.
