GI released a video yesterday of their brewer, Tim, tasting all 4 beers (BC/BCBCS/BW/Prop).

In the video when discussing the BW, Tim says verbatim, "We're using a portion of 2nd use barrels."

I have to go back and watch the full video again, but I think he describes the barrels one of the other beers ages in as first use barrels.

I wonder if what Tim meant to say in regard to the BW was actually "We're using a portion of 3rd use barrels."

Either way, the fact that he says "portion" is interesting. Speculate away!

With all the reports of low yield and reduced allocations for distro, I would be jumping all over that. I will likely get shut-out here in Colorado along with a LOT of other folks across the country.

I picked up two more bottles (4 total between last Friday and today)
I could've purchased as many as I wanted and they didn't seem to care

It's nice knowing I don't have to play the whole Black Friday game

thanks for the update! do let us know if you get more details or more into the exact wording of what you saw. i see another way to take his comments that jibes with what you provided.

here's how that interpretation goes. every year GI purchases supplies of 1st fill bourbon & rye barrels. those 1st fill barrels then become 2nd fill(ed) barrels when they place their ale(s) in them to mature. up to this year, **portions** of that 1st fill supply have been used for each of their variants except barleywine. this year, for the first time, they've allocated a "portion" of their 1st fill barrel supply to their barleywine maturation process.

Do most stores in Michigan begin selling BCBS at 7am on Black Friday?

So last year BCBS comes out with '15 Prop which is peppers/maple/cocoa. That was met with lukewarm reviews, so then they come back in '16 with....peppers/maple/cocoa for '16 Prop AND the planned '16 Maple Rye. Ratings so far for Prop'16 are even worse than Prop '15 (apparently it's an absolute mess by BCBS standards) and Maple Rye isn't to be released at all for the time being cause it "wasn't ready".

Couple that with the infection issues from last year, and it begs the question...what the hell happened to one of my absolute favorite beers?

From the lack of innovation to the lack of execution, I just don't understand how they went from basically kings of the craft world (in my book anyway) to where they are now.

I hope they can get they're stuff together and make a nice comeback next year, cause this is consecutive years of big disappointments after no years previously that were deemed to be disappointments. Also, STOP WITH THE PEPPERS next year! Please?

If u mean party stores, I would say no, they are usually waiting for the hand delivery, don't know many big chain stores that get it

How are 4.229 out of 5, 87 out of 100 and 99 out of 100 considered lukewarm reviews? Those are the average ratings for the big three beer rating sites for 2015 Prop.

I don't know about the scoring on those other sites, but on BA 87 for a BA stout is pretty weak. That would make it the 1,674th best imperial stout. Not very impressive.

I use Untappd, which is far and away the largest I believe. I don't think I've ever seen a lower Bourbon County score until Prop '16 which is about 4.0. So yeah, that's why I think it had lukewarm reviews by BCBS standards.

For those not following the Prop Day thread, the Prop 16 poured today was vastly different than that from FoBAB. I wasn't at FoBAB, but I was at Prop Day and can confirm Prop 16 is delicious.

Much more on the sweet side, with a little spicy kick. Tasted no smoke that other people seemed to be tasting at FoBAB.

It was actually 4.229 when you posted this and it's now at 4.266. The rating isn't vastly different from the last year's version. It will most likely continue to rise after the official release.

It was 4.016 when I looked yesterday

You're apparently checking a different entry than I am because it hasn't gone down by over 0.20 and then gone back up by 0.25 since I first posted the rating being 4.229. That would require many more people having rated it badly followed by many more people rating it higher in a way that a chronological check of the ratings from the last few days indicate didn't happen.

There was only one entry. however, there were about 400+ added check ins from yesterday it looked like. The rating didn't update for me until today. It stayed at 4.016 even with all the added check ins. Not sure if their ratings system updates overnight or something.

Not that it really matters-sounds like some variation going on with Prop anyways

There was no variation with Prop. The reviews from Fobab where everyone claimed the sky was falling must be taken with a grain of salt. People were tasting random sours and big thick stouts all night long, a pepper beer is going to stand out if you switch to that. Also, a small few ounce pour fresh out of a cold keg isn't going to taste the same as something that has sat out and been allowed to bloom at room temp. It's the same reason BCBS and variants all taste like sugar bombs the past 4 years at Fobab. It isn't the right serving environment. I had it at both Fobab and Prop day. They were excellent both days.
