What's your first beer after a dry spell?

I like a nice oatmeal stout. It is so light and a really good one drinks like milk to me. It has a light roasty edge and when the oats are not astingent it is perfectly light and nutty . The beer has no strong flavors in it at all. The guidelines say gives the impression of coffee and gives the impression of cream. When you taste one that is well done you begin to understand why that word impression is a definition.

After staring at the beer in my refrigerator for the last couple of weeks.. I'm sticking with my Brown Note choice as my 1st beer, but I'm not opposed to a 2nd or 3rd beer being different. So tell me, what Oatmeal Stout are you so convincingly referring to?

Never been in this situation, but I'd likely go with a FBS. Not extremely high ABV, not bourbon barrel, nice and smooth. Hitting my system with one of my favorite 12%+ ABV bourbon barrel stouts could be a bit traumatic after abstaining.

Sometimes I'll go a few days without drinking because of my work schedule. It seems like whenever that happens, I find myself craving a big IPA/DIPA.

Well what i am so convincingly referring to is the mouthfeel. milk for medium, cream for full. Literally as a tasting guide to how the beer feels in your mouth. And I meant Great lakes Ohio City. If I had had it fresher I would have had more hops to talk about.

So for strong oatmeal stout that shows a flavor you really should not have and that's chocolate - and impression of chocolate is not the full flavor/scent of chocolate - AND is still impeccable, a tribute to the style and a very high abv, drinks different than the GL There is elysian's dragonstooth.

I hadn't had a beer for two or three months, sort of a "cooling off" period so I won't feel like a hopeless drunk. I do that from time-to-time.

I don't have a go-to. The very first beer I drank was Stone Citrusy Wit.

Agreed, taste buds are able to pick up every delicious bit of hop flavor after a dry spell in a way they never can when consuming at a normal pace.

The longest I've ever gone without beer (since being of legal age) was 6-weeks of basic training. After graduation, I got on a plane for Denver. Having grown up in the northeast, I never had Coors. After finishing up some paper work, me and a couple of my buddies ran down to the bowling alley for a can of Coors original. I don't recommend that!!

I went dry for about a month to get my training started again. That was about 3 months ago now. I can't recall what I started off with, but I recall I had to warm-up to heavy stouts a little. I did have some Old Fashioneds around that time too. My first beer back was most likely a Boulevard Wheat. Something simple.

I plan on going dry March-April, or at least trying next year. That'll help me shape up for a race in April. Plus, most of the seasonal beers I love will be out of production at that point

I quit for maybe 5 months last year just to really concentrate and get past the plateau I was stuck at. Started weighing in at 256lbs, dropped 26lbs but got stuck at 230 for quite some time. I ended up doing the Tough Mudder and felt that was certainly a time for celebration after months of hard work, if you don't count the Michelob or whatever it was they gave out at the end of the run it would be a BA Jone's Dog 12oz I was saving. Man did that beer taste good, especially because it's in my top three for favorite BA stouts ever.

Think I may do another few dry months coming up again to tune up a little bit.

I go 1 or 2 days a week without beer, the other days i have 1.

*insert variant here* Fort Point is what I always seem to lean towards after that day or 2.

Last time this happened I grabbed a Weihenstephaner Hefe and it hit the spot in a way that was so glorious I considered abstaining all over again:grinning: but I didnt:sunglasses::flushed::rolling_eyes:

Ditto for me about 98% of the time. I go big as well, but usually a big DIPA or Barley Wine.

I have been trying to go on a "dry spell" for years now. Yet, can't seem to last more than 4 days without cracking a beer. :slight_frown:

A citrus bomb IPA is AMAZING after a dry spell. It's like your palate has been reset.

It's been a long dry spell since I've had the pleasure of a Young's Oatmeal Stout! Thanks for making me think of it. I miss it badly. Smuttynose Robust Porter could work nearly as well.
