As I mentioned, it wasn't due to the carb or the appearance. Here are my notes:

I started reviewing this oblivious to other reviews here and elsewhere, ignorantly optimistic of a special tastiness to come. If you want to cut to the chase, even though it was in the fridge for 7 months since release, it was infected. This isn't the first time this has occurred at Thirsty Dog. Where before I thought they were just a quirky bunch, at this point, I'm getting fed up and think they really need to do a better job of separating their clean brews from the others.

With a very gentle pour, the head on this was so massive I couldn't even see the liquid in the glass--it was a large Belgian tulip that holds about 16 oz. It was just a ridiculously massive 6 inch milky tan head leaving really sticky layers of lace, on top of a barely perceptible dark brown body.

Smell has some light, musty bourbon and cologne, peppery cedar, a hint of woody maple and vanilla, with some metallic cherry.

Taste is raspberry, creamy lactic acid, wine barrel, and woody cherry--there was no maple whatsoever. Such a let down in every way, except for the fact that--and I find myself saying this for the second time in a month--this unintentional sour was somewhat tastier than some exceptionally bad intentional sours I've had in the past.

To clarify futher, I've had Old Leghumper dozens of times if not more, along with many of their dark brews. This tasted damn near an intentional Oud Bruin or Flanders Red, without a hint of porter or stout anything, let alone maple. Was really looking forward to this one :slight_frown:

Sadly this started to turn at the beginning of August and went completely bad by labor day.

They should take it off the shelves it's been sitting on for months if it's infected. I had this fresh and felt it was overly sweet and did not enjoy it very much. Guess it's buyer beware anymore with a seemingly endless line of infected beers with few breweries refunding money.

Actually when I had my infected bottle I saw (either on here or Untappd) that someone called Thirsty Dog and they were given a handful of 22oz and 750ML bottles of their lineup for their trouble. I'm sure I could have done the same, but I didn't want to drive down to Akron for 6 beers. But I appreciated that they were willing to make it right though.

Glad I didn't sit on that Thirsty Dog maple porter. Drank mine in June and it was very sweet but no sign of infection.

Fair play. From your description, I'd wager there was some lacto in there. Shame. Then again, I don't think I've had a beer from TD since the last Wulver I had.

We haven't bottled any in a bit so not likely too many stores still have it. Look out for Dire Wolf 4 packs though!

Maybe one of these days when a new brewery comes in, another has to leave...

A BA I know had an issue with a sixer of an IPA he bought (I think it was Citra Dog, but I don't rightly recall at the moment.) I also don't remember if he emailed or called, but whichever he did, someone responded. I think they asked for pictures of the bottle or a code or something like that, to verify bottling date or some such issue, but said they'd make it right. Without him making a trip to Akron, they made it right for him. Very much so, if I recall correctly.

That's not first hand knowledge, but first hand v.2 because I saw said recompense. My only experience/issue with TD customer service, but in that one instance, they were VERY receptive to his issue and definitely made it right. YMMV/FWIW

Found out today that Founders Lizard of Koz's label approval is under the BCBS label approval on the desk of the Ohio Liquor Of Commerce.
