This is actually the first year I thought BW tasted nothing like regular.

I cracked a BW last night. Holy Moses was it intense. It was an awesome punch in the mouth. INTENSE sweet bourbon caramel raisin goodness. Mine tasted nowhere near regular. I do think that with some time on it, I'll be glad it was the most abundant variant I found.

I also thought it really didn't taste much like regular. I did love the sweet bourbon caramel taste and has cause me to search for more than I already have.

Yeah I don't think BW tastes at all like regular, it's much sweeter IMO

Really didn't love the one I had this year (obviously still very good, just not great). I saw a bunch and passed on it.

Did you have the BW before the regular? I've done this in the past, and the sweetness of the BW messed with my palate when I had other BC and stouts afterwards.

Don't worry, if anyone wants bottles of Prop '16 (to drink on premises), The Ogden has you covered at $85 a pop.

No, I think my taste buds are just broken compared to you guys. It looks like I was too general by saying it is a sweeter version of regular.

I had it on its own with no interference from any food or beverage.

With the barley wine, keep in mind that in years past it was aged in the barrels that had aged BCBS, so it was quite common to get similar tasting notes between the barley wine and BCBS. This year, due to them (presumably) dumping all last year's barrels, the barley wine was aged in first use barrels (i.e. only used to age bourbon, not previously used to age BCBS). So it would be less likely to have that similarity.

GI released a video on Facebook, with the brewer saying 2016 BCBBW was partially aged in 2nd use barrels. To me that implies some of it was not aged in 2nd use barrels (1st, 3rd, not aged at all, who knows).

I think I posted this in one of the other BCBS threads. Anyway we're up to 34 pages and I can't believe this hasn't been discussed yet considering the brewer himself said it and there is video evidence. If we can't believe him, who the hell can we believe?

Do you have a link to the video? I can't seem to find it.

I was shocked to read that people found BW to taste somewhat like BCBS. I found them to always be completely different. I know BW was aged in barrels that previously held BCBS, but I never found them to be similar. Taste buds are different, I suppose.

If your presumption is correct then I'll in turn presume it is the reason for no King Henry 2.0? Would really love it if someone in the know tells me this is wrong and that we'll still see KH 2.

And if indeed KH 2 was dumped I'm wondering why, since Rare isn't infected. Would hate if uninfected barrels, especially those barrels, were dumped, although I guess I'd understand if they had to be in order to ensure the infection doesn't spread.

Thanks for posting this, man; not only for the BW quote, but because people need to watch this shit before they criticize GI as being just some "corporate sellout." This is exactly the kind of interest in/passion for these beers that we should be looking for.

I don't know if we'll ever see again as they're blending it all together for BCBBW. I didn't go to the black Friday tasting this year, but I have since they started doing BCBBW. If my memory serves me right, I think the 2013 was a blend with 50% aged in 2nd use barrels and the other 50% aged in 3rd use barrels that once had BCBS in it. At the 2014 and 2015 tasting they said they had dropped that to much less, if I recall around 25% aged in 3rd use barrels.

If the percentage is down now and if they're constantly brewing BCBS year round is it possible they have barrels that they pulled liquid out of in the beginning of 2016? Is there any knowledge of how long the BW sits in the 3rd use barrels? It could be only a few months before it's blended with BW that has sat in 2nd use barrels for much longer?

    Thanks!

it is interesting - based on that, we don't know what the percentage breakdown was - but it would seem that, as @Lazhal pointed out, at least some of the BW appears to have been aged in something other than 2nd use barrels (or not aged?). I had heard that this year's barley wine was different from previous years in that previous years had used 3rd use barrels (again to some extent) to age the barley wine.

I don't know anything about King Henry - sorry. My point about the barrels was that they likely has to get rid of lots of barrels used in aging BCBS that they otherwise could have used to age the BW.
