Randomly found another prop16 and coffee16 (last bottles) at a small liquor store after lunch. A couple dollars above retail. I took them both.

I'm getting so lucky this year. Where's the nearest lottery ticket machine?

You've just stated two of the biggest scams going. (1) This stuff isn't as rare as people make it seem. (2) If you do hit up a lottery machine, keep in mind the Chicago Tribune ran an investigative article today stating that Illinois Lottery scratch off tickets never awarded 40% of the grand prizes they advertised...

As of right now its rare to find it near MSRP and if you can find it for under $30 share the wealth! Let the dude be happy at his find.

Shit I'd take a prop for $40, stuff is harder to find than you think in the suburbs and for people who don't go running around to 5 liquor shops a day

    Overreact much? What's the scam?

If it's so easy to get, tell me where I can find Prop or Coffee still sitting on shelves at a reasonable price.

Buying the beer at $10 does no disservice to Goose, because Goose has decided that $10 is the price it wants people to pay for the beer.

There are plenty of products whose demand outstrips supply at a given price point, but the manufacturers of those products don't believe the price should be raised to meet the market. It's not like it's somehow virtuous to simply charge what the market will bear. And Goose wants you to buy beer other than BCBS, so it may want you feeling warm and fuzzy about buying that beer "under-priced" at $10 so that you'll have goodwill toward the brewery and want to buy their regular offerings, the sour sisters, etc. in a future transaction.

People seen to have no problem when things are on sale and the price is under the retail price that goose island decides to set and is different. so why is this any different? The price GI sets is the SUGGESTED retail price. not where it has to be set. the individual shop owner has to decide their own supply and demand, thus the price, they are willing to set to achieve whatever needs they have as a business owner. that could be to push extra product that has been sitting by having a sale or charging a bit of a premium for something that is in higher demand. If they know they can sell it at a given price...more power to them. A lot of griping on here. buy it or don't, it really is that simple.

Because one is saving money over what GI says it should be sold for, and one is paying more than GI says it should be sold for. I understand what you're saying, but it's pretty natural to say to yourself "wtf man, GI says this is a $9.99 beer, and yet these assholes have it for $15.99?" No one wants to pay above MSRP for something you know sells at MSRP all over the place.

I'm not going to get into the supply vs. demand debate since it's not like I disagree that store owners can charge what they want, but it's pretty natural to feel "ripped off" when something seems overpriced. I pass on products all the time because I either know I can get them cheaper elsewhere or just am not willing to pay what I think is price-gouging.

Personally, I'm okay with stores charging a couple extra bucks; I don't think that's unreasonable, given the hassle just stocking the stuff. When you're talking about a 100% increase (or more), that's when I start to get irritated.

For me with BCBS it's the simple time vs money. I personally don't mind standing out in line, if that means I'm pretty close to guaranteed for a bunch of bottles. But, I'm not going to overpay at a store for convenience. I'd rather stick with what I have then trying to expand my cellar with my wallet. Can't knock people willing to pay a bit more, but some of the prices rare and variants have reached is down right crazy.

I get what your saying. But the previous post said that is what gi wants it to be sold at. so that's what it should be priced at. U cant use that as ur basis for argument when u get gouged and then not also speak up when u get a deal. It's just poor hypocritical reasoning. These types of threads have a lot of bad poor excuses we don't need another one. I'd prefer to hear good arguments.

And like other posters say it's all relative. Whike u may feel jobbed others may see value for their time. U think a few bucks extra is ok. Others might be ok w 10-20

Let's not forget that this discussion really started with an example of the market working as intended. Overpriced bottles are sitting on shelves and the lack of BW movement led to a price drop.

I see those as completely separate issues. We're talking about a luxury good that appeals to a very small slice of the population. We're not talking about $20 bottles of water in a disaster area. Literally nobody on the planet actually needs this beer. So while I don't agree with what these kinds of stores are doing, they have the right to set prices as they see fit.

Personally, I make sure to avoid stores that mark this up to a price that I consider unreasonable. I think it's a short-sighted cash grab at the expense of building a loyal customer base, but I also realize that I'm probably not the type of customer that is keeping their lights on.

Well, it's probably not taking advantage of us, but my dad called a couple of days ago saying "Hey, I'm at the liquor store and I found a bottle of that Bourbon beer that you nut jobs wait in line for." When he told me it was $30 and sent me a pic of a regular, I said "Put the bottle down, walk out of that place, and never go back. They are totally trying to rip you off." If I hadn't answered, he totally would have bought it, and I wouldn't have had the heart to tell him he got ripped off after the fact. He has no idea about MSRP or variants or whatever, all he knows is that people line up overnight to get their hands on this, so it must be valuable (i.e. pricey). That's why these kinds of markups leave a bad taste in my mouth.

I don't like it, but I'm willing to accept this as a by-product of massive hype. Whether it's BCBS or KBS or Cabbage Patch Dolls or Tickle Me Elmo or the latest video game console or whatever. There will always be some retailers trying to take advantage of scarcity (real or perceived). I'm glad that GI has a reasonable MSRP on this, and I'll steer my dollars towards stores that come close in terms of their pricing.

Have restocks started to hit any stores yet?

Does anyone know if this is actually going to happen? And if variants will hit? I've heard varying opinions on it, but nothing I know of that is concrete.

I'm not sure there are re-stocks. I've talked to a few owners that share they're sales/releases,and they've never received a second shipment.

If it's anything, it's the distributer sending out buybacks or excess product.

I can’t speak for this year but I know for a fact that some local Binny’s had a restock a few weeks after initial release for 2015. No Prop or Rare, but they did get Regal, Coffee, BW, and Regular.

Last year the distributor also botched the first round pretty badly. (aka Whole Foods Lincoln Park getting a fraction of the stock they did 2014/2016)

I don't think that happened this year so I would expect less of a 2nd round this time.

If i remember correctly, Binnys LP had restocks of regular and barleywine each of the last 3 years.

Usually they'll put out a few cases in the middle section of the biggest open aisle in the middle

There were re-stocks of Rare in that second wave as well last year. The only thing that didn't hit a 2nd time was Prop, from what I could tell.

Wasn't the 2nd wave last year due to the product that was labeled with a higher ABV than approved to sell in states like Georgia, so it was returned to the Chicagoland area? That's why there was no Prop, from what I remember.

Yeah. This is what happened. HOWEVER, I did see someone post a pic on Instagram yesterday that I think was taken at the LP Binnys and there were.....20ish cases of BCBS on the floor. It was definitely a Binny's in the city limits. Not sure which one.
