Got it at binnys in glen ellyn a few weeks ago. Boooo, too many damn hops it wasn't even a beer, it was like bitter hop fire water. My wife thought there were so many bitter hops it tasted almost like cashews or something. Not worth it.

    I'll second that.

Edit; not nate's comment, the one he was replying too. It was like a better Hoptimum

If one doesn't like monster West Coast IPA's, I get why one would not look favorable on this NB/Colob. But, don't confused dislike for the style, with a judgement on the "quality" of a specific beer. Just compare some individual critics of major FFFs brews with the larger body of consensus. IMO Super IPA rocked, just like 99% of Alpine brews, but they roll WC style.

(Burnt tires, onions, garlic....you've got to be f-ing kidding)

I like the style perfectly well. I don't like examples of the style that showcase the particularly catty, onion, super dank aromas and flavor. It is widely known that certain hops tend to give these certain flavors; Summit, Columbus and Chinook being the prime examples. Simcoe (which was used in this beer) is also know to impart these aromas and flavors. So saying I don't know what I am experiencing or that I am somehow clueless is just being ignorant. Everyone has a different palate and tastes things differently. I never said the beer was somehow of lesser quality, I just expressed my opinion that I did not like it.

    Just agree to disagree.

It hit here in NC a few months ago and I enjoyed it. Definitely a stronger flavor profile but a great beer especially for the price.

while I do agree that everyone has a different palate, and that certain hops do in fact put off certain smells/flavors, I just don't see that anyone could smell onion in this beer, no way at all...

It's pretty heavy with Columbus characteristics. I personally really like those flavors and aromas, but can also see why others wouldn't like it.

I agree to disagree. And my intent wasn't to call out (or worst, insult) any one specific post. It does seem as though, monster WC IPAs are love / hate....Port / Stone / Alpine / etc.

And I wonder if part of the issue is individual bio-chemical thing, like the fact that x-percent of the population tastes cilantro as "soapy".

In the end, it's much better that we all don't like the same stuff, viva la difference.

Part of people's palates being different is that sometimes they are more physically sensitive to certain compounds and might pick them up when others do not. Differing palates aren't just subjective, sometimes there's a physical difference in why we experience beers differently.

This is one of those times, because although I really liked this beer, there absolutely was (to me and many others apparently) at least a hint of onion in the nose of this beer. Nothing in the ballpark of Onion Dancer from last year, but from the two bottles I had it was definitely there. Not too strong, didn't detract from the beer for me, but noticeable. It is very possible you simply are not very sensitive to whatever compound it is that has caused some people to pick up an onion note.

Edit: 2BDChicago, I didn't read your post before I made mine, but that's pretty much exactly what I'm talking about.
