I don't like when there are too many bottles open at once.. Like, we're still drinking 4 bottles and someone opens a fifth.. Like, dude, we'll get to it.

Only a couple of my friends are active in the on-line beer world, and when we have a bottle share, anything is fair game. We tend to have a lot of really good brews, and when someone happens to bring a walezbro, most of the time my friends don't know the hype behind the beer. We share pretty frequently, and we tend to have nice little stashes. Add in the fact that we're near Vancouver, Seattle, and PDX, and having enough good beer to drink is never a problem.

One thing I don't particularly care for is when it's a "theme" tasting. Last week was a Dark Beer share, and I just didn't even go. Another peeve is when doing verticals, having all the years poured at once. Some of my friends like to go back and forth between vintages, and I like to focus on one at a time. By the time I get to my last few pours, the beer is room temperature, and starting to oxidize.

Exactly. Why not just say "hey, I am hosting a bottle share and I will provide xxxx" as an indication of what will be consumed and what each person might bring. I probably wouldn't bring something rare if I had no clue what others were providing.

This bottom part to me is asinine. Who invites people to a tasting, especially when the person essentially says i have too much bourbon, but in the invite says you are going to charge for it? Great booze (whether it beer, bourbon, scotch, wine, etc) is meant to be shared. You may not want to share with just anybody, and that is fine, but part of the enjoyment of such things is sharing it with others who appreciate it as much (or nearly as much so) as you. And the great part is, when you develop said friends, it just becomes understood that if you share something special one night, you will at some point in the future be repair in kind some other night. People who have great booze and supposedly have these "great friends" that they want to share stuff with (but really won't share and just parade around the great stuff they have) just boggle my mind. Will never understand that sentiment

Sure there is; The guy whos first hand on the Bomber makes himself comfy with an 8 oz pour into his glass, while the other 8 guys sit and watch.

Well why help him secure bottles? Let him do it for himself. I wouldn't invite him to another share he'd be out.

If you have nine guys splitting a bomber, you weren't gonna get much anyway.

I agree , everyone gets a 3 oz pour or so. But it's the guy filling half his cup or glass before everyone gets a shot. I think 9 is too many, I think 4-6 is about right. But there's always one guy who does this, nobody appreciates it.

Unfortunately, "some of his personality traits" aren't opinions that you simply might disagree with. Does he participate around here?

I don't understand. Are you implying that I can't disagree with the way he acts at times? He does not participate in beer trading forums.

My favorites are with a maximum of 5-6 people. That way everyone gets a fairly good sample size of each beer brought, and the share doesn't get overwhelming.

No big deal. Not liking personality traits- and saying so- might work better than disagreeing with them and putting up with them. He is who he is and likely will not change. It does sound to me that he must have some good traits; and at the very least, some shared history that you care about.

My biggest pet peeve is when there are so many good bottles to open that we never get around to opening one I brought. There's one bomber I dragged around to four shares and never got opened, so someday I'll just drink it myself.

When the one I'm most interested in doesn't get opened. It's happened. But "peeve" is strong because it does mean I had plenty else.

Man--seems like bottle shares a lot of folks are doing are too much work! Robert Parker invited?

When someone complains about an extra I bring. I always bring something at the level of the share, but sometimes I also want to include some shelf beer I enjoyed or I want to do some cellar cleaning and pull out something with a bit of age to see how it's holding up.

Happened to me...I finally realized no one really wanted to drink it very much & took it to the dome.
