Definitely Mocha Wednesday! In fact, that beer is officially off my "age/cellar" list!

That is scary. I have a few sitting right now.

How prevalent an issue is this really???

OK, opened, drank, and finished this evening. It was my last bottle so I can't do any more comparisons. No off flavors detected. Tried to drink it early on so that I didn't have palate fatigue. It was quite delicious.

I'm an idiot. Read that as White Chocolate. Ignore me.

I too put in random nice bottles as extras. FO and M2 were extras I sent out in a few boxes this year.

I had sent a variety of Bruery bottles: Black Tuesday, Choc Rain etc. I always try and include good extras.

I had a 2014 MW this year and though the coffee had faded it wasn't anything like the White Mocha described above (which was, by comparison, only a couple months old). The commenter who described the green pepper taste absolutely nailed it. I remember at the time asking something like, "Why does this taste like Frank's Red Hot?" but, again, I was a few deep at that point.

I wouldn't call it an issue, it just has a newer flavor you're not expecting. The boozy bourbon and roasty stout still dominate heavily, you just lose the coffee and gain the pepper. It's not super strong, but it's there. This is of course after maybe a year, or a little more. At a year or slightly less I think it's still fine for anyone, even those not aware of the change. I just make it a point to drink by the 12 month mark.

Bingo! Thanks for clarifying what I said... It's definitely not an infection or anything bad like that... it just takes on a new flavor. I'm not sure if it's the type or amount of coffee, but MW definitely takes on a Green Pepper taste. Even older vintages take on that flavor IMO (Had a 2013 last month and a 2015 in October... both had that distinct flavor). I LOVE Mocha Wednesday fresh, so it's simply a beer I won't age in the future. None of the other BBA Stouts I've had from the Bruery have problems as they age, so I don't mind clearing out the MW in my cellar and puting in more Grey Monday and Chocolate Rain!

I do. I regularly solo bombers and 750s so pouring into a single glass saves me from having to drink and then top off.

I drank a 14 MW to numb the pain of Ohio State curb stomping the Huskers. It tasted great but it's also been cold the entire time I've had it.

I had 2014 MW at society member monday and did not get this taste. It tasted exactly like 2016. I am not the best at identifying good vs better batches of MW. I really think they all taste the same with age. #newmoneytongue

It isn't just Bruery coffee beers which exhibit this characteristic. Google "bourbon county coffee green pepper" and you'll get a bunch of hits from late 2015, including a number of threads here on BA.

So you guys don't recommend holding on to Mocha Wednesday? I was lucky to get a 2015 in trade and got two bottles of '16 from Bruery sales (2016 PS / 2017 RS) this year. I haven't tried MW yet, but was going to pop one of the '16's for New Years. Was also thinking about starting a vertical with the others. If they weren't $40 a bottle, I'd take the chance. But will be deeply disappointed if they weren't the best they can be.

In my experience, coffee beers that are unrefrigerated tend to develop the green pepper flavor anywhere from 3-12 months depending on the base beer, with last year's Tovarish developing it in March for example.

As a result, IPA's & coffee beers go straight into the fridge for me.

There was a verticle available of MW, CR, and BT (2012-2015) at HI times liquor in orange county. Not sure if it's still there. Pricey but you might be able to buy it instead of trading for it.
