This is my policy as well. If I don't have the beer in hand I let the other trader know that I don't actually have it. Nothing gets set in stone until beer is in hand.

Hanzo is very honest. He's the only BA I know that makes threads that make him look bad.

The only time I do a trade without the beer in my possession is when I agree to trade a local year round beer. I woudln't, say, agree to numerous trades claiming I have numerous Dark Lords of various vintages when I really didn't have any...

I had set up a trade to send out some Vigneronne but when I got to the store it was gone. Another store may have had it but I wasn't gonna go searching like crazy for it. So I picked up a couple bottles of Fou Foune there instead and told the guy it was good so he took that.

I disagree. Just tell the person you have to check first. Don't promise anything that you don't have.

Duh. And that's exactly the lesson to learn for most traders.

Yeah, I just don't think someone should have to learn that because they made a mistake.

I agree with many of the comments on this thread. I've been trading for a while and never had this problem, and agree that it's not the kind of thing that needs to happen for someone to insure this doesn't happen. I've been on the short end of this scenario and it sucks. Lesson learned is stop trading the Cantillon you work so hard to get here (the US) :-) ...but seriously, I'll wait til I have bottles in hand in the future. That being said, there are a handful of BAs who will be enjoying Fou' Foune (and other Cantillon) shortly.

Not exactly, but I did boast in a thread I could get CL Golden Delicious easily, and a trading partner messaged me he wanted a bunch and naturally when I went to get it it was gone at both stores that had many just days earlier. I did end up finding it, though, later for the partner, hence my not exactly.

a while back i set up a trade, Melange for Surly locals. let's just say that I watched it sit on shelves for a good while & just as I was about to pick it up, poof it was gone. needless to say I was thoroughly embarrassed & made a mad scramble to find more. almost thought of doubling down at a rip off store that had one bottle left, would have rather paid $60 & followed through on a promise than lost my dignity. luckily BA came through & got some help in SD, sent off the Melange with extras & will never pre-trade a bottle before it's in hand again, cheers!

I worked out a trade with a regular trading partner, but i was just a bit short. We'd traded before and i knew he liked Ten Fidy. I told him i'd pick some up and toss it in.

Ya, well...that didn't work so well. Ten Fidy was no where to be found. I went to no fewer than 15 stores before finding some. I probably should have just given up and sent something else; my trading partner would have understood. But dammit, i was not going to be defeated by Oskar Blues.

That's the only time i've ever traded a beer not in hand, and it was really almost an extra. Never again.
