Don't you know? Chicago is part of SE MI.

    And Indiana.

And with TG coming here this year, Iowa.

    :grinning:

Its great that we haven't seen a release in a while here and when we get it, this happens.

The beer distributed in Chicago was brewed in Chicago

Other than the two degenerates in this thread who seem intent on reminding all of us why the term "FIB" exists, I haven't heard anything other than praise for the Illinois release of Juice Is Loose.

I have a couple friends who were anti-Transient for whatever reason (or more like had never tried them and somehow that made them a non-impressive brewery somehow?) who were completely blown away by the cans that I gave them and who are now Transient converts.

Beyond that, I think it's pretty badass that Transient took the time and effort to brew in somebody else's facility and self distribute so that we could all have Juice Is Loose for NYE.

I'm hard pressed to think of another brewery locally who produces such a wide variety of styles and somehow knocks every single one of them out of the park.

Also: Transient's can art is top notch.

Might not matter to some but that attention to detail matters to me.

So if any of you get the chance to head up to Bridgman, I recommend it. There you will find other beers than JIL. These are great beers, some are even under $10 (even $8 sometimes). To go of course.a Find me other people producing sours at this level and with this great pricing. For example, his foedre series were like $11 or 12 while a similar jester king beer would be $20 and you'd have to wait in line. Also the tap room prices are insanely affordable and the selection is awesome. Not to mention the meat market down the street. Transient is killing it and I'm glad I've been a member from the beginning. I'd just suggest before bashing their practices, maybe visit them instead and see how small their operations are.

I almost added them in, but then realized I should add MN (Surly) too, and thought the joke was getting too long.

Also, if the big guys from WI came to Chicago in full, I'd almost have trouble leaving the city, and I need the excuse!
I'm actually a huge proponent of can/bottle art mattering. I don't know what it is, but the presentation really helps me enjoy the beer. JIL has cool art on the can, but I also love how minimalistic it is; it's just a generic can with a stick slapped on. Feels more "authentic" in some ways.

And no, I don't avoid beer with bad and/or mass produced art. I love the new BCS bottles and also the new Navaja cans.

It takes a lot of balls to go out and start your own business. It takes a ton of hours, likely leveraging everything you own for start up equipment with the likelihood of going completely bankrupt very high. if anyone thinks he is getting rich (yet) then they just don't know how business works. There is more investment in equipment, more debt to take on with the hopes that a good thing keeps going.

Prices are determined by what the market will bear, period. Ever buy anything from Amazon? Buy early and it's cheaper, the less inventory the higher the price goes.

If you are price conscious go buy some $1/can IPA or a Chevy Mailbu. If you want something a little better buy some Transient or a Acura TL. It's your money and your choice.

of all the cars you could have paired with Transient, you use the only car on the planet that you have to pass a douchebag test to purchase one.

It's easy to say "well if it's too much don't buy it" but that can quickly lead to prices simply pricing people out because "well the richer of us can afford to buy the limited stock so go pound sand poorer folk." I would think one glance at * would highlight the danger to people of "well hey let's just all pay what the market dictates" line of thinking.

When you are talking about limited products undortunatly the market DOES dictate what will be charged. Were not talking about water, or heat, or electricity, or gas, or basic food. We are talking about BEER. A luxery good. As craft grows and the line between world class and good become more defined pricing will rise on world class offerings and it is only beneficial for the brewers and breweries we claim to love.

Lets take your Hop Butcher Example. Lets say costs are the same (I bet they are not) but lets just say they are. And you as a brand new brewery trying to grow and expand in an challenging market have the opportunity to charge $22 for a four pack AND you are going to sell it out in a day or two. Why on earth would you sell it for less? It obviously wasnt priced too high for the market considering it sold out.

I'm confused. We live in America. For the most part, the market decides the price of everything.

This is true for everything but beer, beer needs to be priced according to the whims of beer nerds on forums.

No, beer pricing should be egalitarian with no regard as to the brewer's overhead, material costs, packaging, labeling, or profitability.

How about open auction? "Do I hear $20? 20? 20? 20! Do I hear 30? 30? 30? That man steps up with $30." Gets rid of the lines, makes everyone a part of the process and it doesn't get more free market than that.

I want to participate so here's my story. While I am all for brewers charging what they need to in order to cover their expenses and make it worth their while, the $20/4 pack is about the breaking point for me. I could have picked up a couple of 4 packs but opted for 1 due to the price and my budgetary constraints. Maybe that's good in the grand scheme of things as one other person got at least 1 4 pack out of the delivery. The beer is really good and I will certainly purchase again in the future, but the price, combined with the difficulty in procuring, will make the beer a 'once in a while' as opposed to an all the time for me. No ill will towards Transient, just the reality of my situation.
