That's sums up my feelings pretty much as well. I certainly can't fault them for pricing that way (and could argue they are actually underpriced), just that my purchases get more scrutinized at that level. Same reason I haven't bought Abrasive since it's been on shelves again, or Todd the Axeman. Add in the fact that you've got to be available to get JIL (or other similar beers such as Reply Hazy) the day or two after it comes out, and it makes it more likely for me to pass.

I'm actually more likely to buy it from the taproom if it's available while driving to/from places in MI - for some reason it seems like more of a treat or just part of a "vacation" budget kind of thing...that's my strange thinking to justify purchases sometimes!

This is the free market at work. You like it, enough to buy 1 4 pack here and there but not as much as possible. Hooray capitalism!
Thanks for the honest assessment - that, as opposed to calling it "price gouging", etc. and other negative attacks on the business, is what I think is useful on this forum (and probably useful to the brewer since he reads it).

I've also passed on Todd & Abrasive lately due to price/finances. Any while it kind of sucks because I enjoy both beers immensely, and the beers can certainly command the price, there are just too many other beers that I enjoy at a lower price-point. It's interesting in that craft beer had traditionally been the more expensive option to macro lagers, but it seems that we are now seeing more and more premium product within the craft beer world.

And to borrow the analogy from earlier, I guess I'm the guy who gets to rent an Acura a few times a year, but I'm generally resigned to driving a Honda the rest of the time. At least I get to be thankful that I'm not in a Malibu.

I'm the guy with the Acura who lives in a shitty house.

As in, I have NO PROBLEM spending a ton of money on the best beer I can find, to the detriment of most other things. (No, I do not have children)

I can't understand why in the hell everyone wants an Acura.

The first $20 4-pack that I ever did see was an unknown (to me) beer called Bourbon County Stout at a liquor store in Dekalb back in 2009. My jaw hit the floor. I could not fathom what this beer could be, and why it cost so much.

My point? Nothing - I just wanted to relay that cool story. But there are probably lessons in there somewhere.

The point is that the good shit costs good money. Period, end of story.

Funnily enough, BCS was also the beer that introduced me to more expensive beer ($16 at Walgreens, 2012).

Once I figured out what it was, I went back and grabbed a 4-pack, and now it's an all-time favorite. Basic point is, don't let a price tag deter you from trying something new and interesting in your hobby, as long as it's affordable to you.

I tried to go back through this thread and find an answer to this question but couldn't see anything specific....

Was JIL a one off release? Or going to be a random release? At this point now it something that will need to be traded for to try it?

JiL has been released twice in cans at the brewery and once in Chicago. Presumably it will be brewed and canned again in the future.

Are you trying to get cans right now? If so you would need to trade.

Personally, I would just wait until the next release to try it really fresh. It's a terrific beer.

Only thing I'd add - the 2nd canning at the brewery was so damn close to the canning in Illinois that it seemed like one release. It wasn't, but it seemed like it. They released it a few days before Christmas, ran out of cans a few days later, and when they released cans in Chicago they were still filling growlers in Bridgman. Smart play
