Seems like the common theme is "people".

    SHOTS FIRED!!!

But seriously, interesting and controversial comment. Explain.

Last I heard, Daewon lived in San Pedro so he is a local. There's vids of him skating Sunken City.

In my opinion, this style is so flawed fundamentally that I can't get behind it. I guess I'm old-fashioned in the sense that I believe style guidelines are something to be respected in beermaking. But this is why I don't own a brewery. And there are professional brewers out there that agree but still make these beers to capitalize on this trend. Again something I can't get behind, but this is why don't own a brewery.

Interesting and cheers for the response.

I suppose this is why Highland Park's West Coast IPA won gold at GABF despite the secondary/trading market (aka "everyday" beer drinkers) clearly prefer this NE-style of beer.

For the record, I can see why people like it. Some of my buddies have never liked the west coast or traditional east coast (malty) IPAs but do enjoy the softer mouth feel from (I believe) oatmeal being added to the malt bill. But, this really falls into "everyone has their own taste" category.

I'm intrigued to see how these beers fair going into major competitions like WBC and GABF. In the American IPA category, a traditional BJCP judge is going to fail these beers immediately upon seeing them. A new category may emerge to accommodate them.

If the BJCP does create a category for NE IPAs, would that change your feeling towards them as a style?

Hard to say. I'm actually hoping the fad passes altogether and quick.

So we want beer that tastes good, regardless of style, to go away?! :astonished:

So you believe that people will one day realize that this is an inferior brew because it doesn't adhere to style guidelines and stop brewing it altogether? Despite it being preferred by a lot of people?

Certainly there is a lot of hype behind this style, fueled by scarcity and FOMO... but I think you need to make a distinction between fad and trend. This style might be trendy but I don't believe it's just a passing fad, and until supply gets closer to demand, I do not seeing they hype dying down either.

What you SHOULD wish is that NE IPAs start getting produced at scale and at a quality that is as commonplace as other styles of beer. If someone can buy a 9.5/10 version of the style at Whole Foods, they're less likely to wait 2 hours at Monkish for a 10/10, and the hype dissipates.

I want to stop seeing them completely. I believe that will happen once larger breweries begin replicating the style and putting them on the shelves in supermarkets. They won't be cool anymore. Someone else will come up with something that's trendy and people will forget they ever soiled their pants over this nonsense. That's how trends work.

Different type of people today. Mainly locals and Toyota people, i guess real monkish supporters like their Belgium style beers.

Maybe for most people... no haze, no IPA no care

Funny you should mention that. He was actually the one person in line getting a beer ahead of me when i picked up bottles and grabbed a pour of Smarter than Spock.

The haze seems to be failing at the comps based on style guides but I would imagine that the comps will move to accommodate the style in some way since there is so much talk and hype around them.

It will be difficult for the comps to ignore it and attempt to stay "relevant" in the eyes of many beer drinkers.
