Work has me now occasionally visiting the fair city of San Antonio. Im a big beer and BA fan. Any of the breweries down here have anything BA on tap this week? Will be there Thursday nite. Best lead rewarded with a generous IP trade from MI/WI next trip down : D Thanks in advance to the Texas beer borg.
Hey! I'm in the DFW area, but go to SA fairly frequently, and stay apprised of most Craft Beer stuff in the state. I did a quick scan of all the SA-area breweries and their current offerings, and I think your best bet for BA beers is The Friendly Spot (http://www.thefriendlyspot.com). Locals either love or hate the place, as the pricing can be wonky (like anywhere else, always best to ask the price first...), but they have SA's best selection, hands down...BA or not. Now, if you are looking for a brewery with BA stuff currently on, I think your best bet there is Southerleigh (http://www.southerleigh.com). They are a high-end restaurant in a posh hotel with some of the most interesting and creative beers in SA, and perhaps Texas. Granted, there are several other fantastic SA-area breweries (Freetail, 5 Stones, etc.), but for places open Thursday night offering BA beers, I think the above places are your best bets... I hope this helps...happy hunting! Cheers!
I live here and totally disagree with this, I would recommend Hoppy Monk and this week also is Big Beer Week at Flying Saucer.
Freetail is putting out their black currant Berliner on Thursday. Not BA, I guess. It's sour, though. Close enough.
Download the Big Hops app for your phone. Big Hops on Huebner have several barrel-aged beers along with Freetail's sour IPA. Also, Flying Saucer is across the street.
I agree with hoppy monk, it can be a little d bag filled at times, but great selection. They tend to have a few vintages of some good stuff as well.
Good point...completely forgot about the Saucer...a quick scan of their current beer list (http://www.beerknurd.com/locations/san-antonio-flying-saucer#beer) showed several BA beers, including many rarer offerings...as a local, in your opinion, is The Friendly Spot still worth going to? I'll be there in three weeks...
If you have never been, yes. Especially if you have a Wife and kids. Just not my personal preference.
OK. The votes .. well, vote... is in and Grendle is the winner. The tip of Big Beer week at flying saucer lands me a sampler of the gods at less than these beers cost in a bottle. BOOYA! BCBW, Tweak, Sucaba, Hell on Earth, Parabola..... best tap list I've ever seen for big ba beers
FYI, I'll be there today between 4-6 sitting at the bar in a gray sweater. Feel free to say hi and make sure you try that Real Ale BA 20th Anniversary IPA.
That's an awesome list at Flying Saucer, hopefully some the barrel aged stuff will still be on the week of the 30th.
I would suggest you try it out for at least one beer. If not completely satisfied, then a couple blocks down is The Filling Station that has fewer taps but very economical with great beer selection. Also if in the vicinity, seriously consider Stella Public House and Freetail Taproom S. Presa with in the Southtown area. I realize many other options exist in PEarl area etc. but trying to advise based on where you said you will be.
Heading to San Antonio tomorrow and Tuesday for business. Any additional recommendations to the previously provided advice?
