Recently I was at a local brewery, the closest production brewery to my home. I ordered a flight. Three of the beerst were satisfactory (two were great in fact). One though had an odd tartness ( in a style not known for tartness).

The brewer (whom I have met before) was serving that day. I told him how much I liked the other beers, but also about the problem with the fourth. He thanked me for my feedback, and offered a replacement taster - which I passed on, as I did not want more to drink.

Instead of complainING online about quality issues with local beer, I want to improve local beer.

I'm with you man. But there are a lot of local breweries that are more about "atmosphere" than actual beer quality. I go to most local breweries not really expecting top of the line beer. I just want somewhere to watch a football game and eat from a food truck. The beer comes second sometimes.

I like the passion and enthusiam of local craft breweries, but I'll be honest, if the beer is only average, I'll spend my money elswhere

What you love about local craft beer is the ability to tell the brewer that their beer is off?

What I love about breweries with good quality control is not having to contact the brewers to say that their beer is off.

What I love about local beer is that I am assured that it is fresh. Needless to say but it has to be quality beer as well. Fresh beer that is non-quality is not a good deal.

    Cheers!

Hats off to you friend! Where I reside, the sunny SoCal OC Califor-Nigh-Aa, quite a bit of breweries up in a bustle with beer. I make it almost like a part-time job public service type to go into these breweries and bestow some biting criticism. I'm on a mission emitting improvements to the very beer makers themselves. After all they're people like we, they make mistakes. Whatever I can do to improve beer as a serious field of aesthetics, I don't mind the time I give.

No but for me personally, if I were to posited such an observation, would be the social one-on-one me to you interaction with the beer in a way. It's this elixir crafted by a wizard who I may brain pick and understand with. Maybe sometimes in a while I could disagree with this mixer but perhaps often enough I am able to be understood by these concoctionists and really come to an agreement after he has made my suggested changes. We both, I know as a matter of fact, benefit greatly from this exchange. Never have I ever had a brewster say they did not prefer out encounter. In fact, I don't even ask but a dime for any profit sharing following my fine tuning at their establishment

I enjoy being able to ask the brewer what's coming out next, and getting answers and time lines few others seem to know. Looking forward to a DIPA with Galaxy and Idaho007 hops in a few weeks!

This all day. Fresh is key to many of the beers I love, but I'd wholeheartedly agree that if it's mediocre it's mediocre. Happy to say there's quite a few local great beers that go across different styles.

I love that I don't have to drive to Carton/Kane/TiredHands (each roughly an hour away from either my home or work) to get fresh straight from the source bomb ass IPAs and other random good shit. SO SO SO glad that Flemington now has Conclave and Lone Eagle, 10 minute drive. small town NJ at its best

I'm willing to give every local brewery a shot, but if the beers consistently have quality issues I won't be a return customer. The brewers and servers at a brewery should know their own beers well enough to know when something tastes off without me telling them.

Freshness is really the only benefit of great locals. 515 for the win on hoppy beers.

No. It is that the person who owns and runs the brewery is serving me. That I can give feedback directly to them. And that I can play a role in improving my local beer. And if I do get a bad beer, he will offer me another, right there, nothing to send to anyone.

There are of course local breweries where I have never had a bad beer and I patronize them when I can, also to improve the local scene. But I often combine a beer with a bike ride, so I drink where I am.

    OK. Gotcha.
Around here, even the smallest places do not typically have the brewer or owner serving beer.

The idea is a big reason why I go to Lone Pine as often as I can get over there. From my experience, the brewers whom I've talked to there want to hear complaints, criticisms, suggestions ... I'm not sure how much they act on all of it, but they listen to the patron and always seem genuinely interested in what you think.

And then there's Jester King. *THEY* tell YOU when their beer sucks. :stuck_out_tongue::grinning: I'm exaggerating, but suffice it to say they know the truth and can handle it and don't see positive/negative ... they just see information, and the more the better.

I wanted to tell the brewer at Blue Collar that his beers sucked, and why, but I gave the place two chances, second worst than first, and kept silent. I have no problem though warning you all.

Ideally one could do both- tell the brewer and give a heads up to the community. On the brewery's end, I often find it's just as important how they handle the feedback as brewing the beer in the first place.

Theres a few places in Greensboro that are pretty mediocre as well, they don't make anything I'd walk in and buy. They won't make you sick bad but they're so mediocre it's painful. The up side they're really nice places with good food, but that's not enough for me. I'm so picky anymore it's tough for any craft bar to wow me, you see 5 IPAs on tap I guarantee one is DFH 90, probably Torpedo, Two Hearted, maybe a local, maybe Coranado. They're all good solid IPAs that I really don't care to pay $6 for.
