I'm thinking about doing a testing of Celebrator, Korbinian, Andechs and Optimator for this.

I had one lonely Celebrator sitting in my cellar the would have been perfect. Then my neighbor stopped over and was looking at my beer. He's not a big craft guy but told me he really liked Shiner Bock. I gave him the Celebrator. Now I need to buy more :grinning:

Do it! I'll be drinking Celebrator for sure, as my dad gave me a four pack for Christmas. I plan on picking up a bottle of Korbinian as well! I'm looking forward to some malty, rich goodness.

It's been about a year since I had Korbinian last. I drank it with a nice schnitzel and spaetzle as well. Makes me wonder if I should go do my tasting at the local German restaurant

I bought a six-pack of last year's Consecrator at the end of December. Had one already and although ~10 months old it was still damn tasty. Might drink one on the 4th in addition to Celebrator. :grinning:

I'll have to save a bottle of Troegenator from the Troegs variety case I have right now, and pull a bottle of Samichlaus out of the cellar too.

    Whoo!

I shall eagerly be looking forward to this. Definitely gonna buy three or four different Doppelbocks to down so I can really participate. Hopefully any variances I see you all speak of I can replicate with some of my choices. Spreading it out to a genre rather than specific beer also opens up great opportunities to learn of some new beers I'd like to try. You can count on me at my laptop, sitting on my patio in the beautiful Orange County with a pen and paper looking for some promising suggestions.

Marvelous! We look forward to hosting you! I really hope these style tastings excel, as I think it'll be a fantastic way of exploring various styles and regions, where as previously everything people hyped up are IPAs and Stouts, and they're generally pretty tough to acquire. I look forward to seeing what other Doppelbocks are out there awaiting me

Why stop there? Toss a Paulaner Salvator into the mix too!

Can anyone recommend a good widely available Doppelbock to try? I have Korbinian and Celebrator, which I may end up splitting with my dad since Doppelbocks are one of the only beers we both enjoy. I'd love to try something new to me since I've already had those two before.

    Cheers.

Aside from the easily obtainable Spaten Optimator and Paulaner Salvator, some of my personal favorites are Weltenberger-Kloster Asam Bock, and Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche (if you like smoke !). Andechs, which has been mentioned a lot here already, is exceptional as well. Prost!

Just today I picked up a Korbinian, Paulaner Salvator and Augustiner Maximator- if you haven't had either of the last two.

I might have to try to find Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche. I have only had two smoked beers and one was my least favorite beer ever. I quite enjoyed the other (Stone's Smoked Porter). I actually snagged a smoked stout from Pretty Things. I know they are no-more, but I was pleased to find it on the shelf and couldn't pass it up with how good their base RIS is! I want and need some more smoked beer experience.

    Cheers.

Pipeworks recently released a doppelbock called Goat Collector - I've been saving the one I grabbed for this.

I just grabbed an Asam Bock this past week - never had it, but figured it was well worth trying! I skipped the Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche because I find those beers to be way too smoky for my taste.

Definitely an acquired taste, or appreciation to say the very least. It's an amazing beer, but not exactly a classic example of the style. Based on your history with them, go forward with a very open mind .

Understood, and agree that it is very smokey. I find that interesting though, based on our previous discussion about that Peats Dragon you sent me. I know they're not the same thing, but both extremely intense in their own rights and relatively in the same family to me.

The more reviews, usually the easier to find, so this is a good place to start:

If you like boozy beers, pick up a Samichlaus Classic (I like it much better than the Helles or Schwarz versions). If there are older years bottles on the shelf, by one of those. The beer is great after a few (or many) years - the hot boozy and sweet flavors meld together.

If it's any consolation, the Eiche would be the perfect place to start because it's maltier and not as smoky as the others. The Spring seasonal Fastenbier would be the next step if you're still interested in pursuing their lineup after that (which I highly recommend that you do ).

No way. I have a Samichlaus Classic lined up for this. (Of course, that's a malt liquor. Says right there on the label.)
