Still a great beer but not as good as last year.

I'd actually agree that it seems a bit thinner (though not "artificial") and I thought that before seeing this thread. but it does get better once it sits and warms a touch...

I had one last night. I thought it was perhaps not as chocolatey as last year but was still damn good. Didn't notice that it was any thinner than usual.

Dude I agree. My first Bfast stout of the season was bad. I was so sad. It appeared different. there was little head, and what was there wasn't that sexy cinnamon color. The feel was thin and it simply tasted like old, bitter coffee. I've had more since and they've been better. Initially I simply presumed the bottle/case got fucked up somehow but who knows, right?

Listen. I just did a vertical dating back to '01 and the '01 is way better than the 2011 or 2012.

Sorry. I'm just being a dick. Regardless if 2011>2012, I still think Founder's did a great job and I will continue to support them.

The first 2 I had weren't as good as I thought they used to be.

The following after that were good.. Ironically, none of the beers I've had, were dated at all.. No rubs offs... just no dates on ANY of the 3 4-packs I've had.

Thr first bottles I had this year were from early August. I thought my palate had just changed. There was something just a bit lacking. I just cracked open a bottle from mid September. I can say it is quite a bit better. Fuller mouthfeel. Richer in general.

Just wanted to chime in here. Had my first FBS of the year last night, and it was absolutely different from previous years (moreso than just the obvious deifferent year different batch irregularities)

The mouthfeel was certainly thinned out. Chocolate flavor is muted. Didnt have that depth that FBS typically has. I didnt read the full 5 pages here, but OP, Im with you on this one.

Gotta nib this one in the bud... Had this years vintage a few days ago and IMHO is the best FBS that I have had. I dont know where you are getting this notion of "lingering artificial coffee and a much thinner mouth feel". It crazy talk! You need to spank your palate for thinking that! Bad palate! Bad!

Guess I'll chime in. Two things I noticed compared to last year: 1) mouthfeel is definitely thinner, guarantee 2) a little bit of metallic imperfection, not as much as say, IRS, but a little bit o' the foil.

I noticed that metallic taste as well, and was super disappointed :slight_frown:

It is too late for this five pages in, but since there's limited bottle dates on posts it is hard to compare batches. The most recent I have had have been all that I remember FBS to be.

Picked up a case a couple of weeks ago - I'm enjoying this year's version as much as previous years. Not sure what the hubbub is all about.

Just had a 9/17/12 bottle followed by a 8/2/12 bottle. The coffee flavor and body is definitely bigger ,especially on the tongue, from the newer bottle. Was thinking this topic was bs but there's something to it.

Yeah, totally metallic and so much different than previous years. By the way this year's BCBS isn't as good as last years. Neither is this year's Parabola, KBS...let's just face it last year's brews are always better and the vintage before that is twice as good at least. Batch variation certainly exists, but not to the level people claim on this site. You can probably blame about 5% on true batch variation, 5% on a change in your own palate or inaccuracies in your own recollection, and about 90% on your imagination or some subconscious need to overly romanticize a previous vintage that you can boast about drinking to less seasoned craft beer drinkers.
