Yeah, V4 is definitely up there for me. I'm not sure it's quite as milkshake-like as some people want, but it was tasty as all hell.

Care to elaborate? I like Charlatan, but I'm kinda surprised to see it mentioned in this thread. I passed on it yesterday and went with Cumulus instead, but would be intrigued if Maplewood is doing something new with it.

It took a bronze at GABF this year, why would they intentionally tweak it unless it was due to hop shortage, cost cutting, or supplier issues?

I have no idea. I'm genuinely curious about what beardown meant about this latest batch. I've been drinking it pretty regularly over the last month and skipped it yesterday simply to get something new into the fridge. If there has been a change, I'd be interested in checking it out sooner rather than later, otherwise I'm sure I'll pick some up in a few weeks. Regardless, I don't think I'd ever refer to it as a "NE-style" beer, so I guess I'm a bit puzzled about why it's being brought up here.

Just picked up 1/10 cans today (on sale at WF), and literally just opened this thread to see if Charlatan had been mentioned in this thread (was guessing "no" due to APA status) OR had always been this hazy. This is so good!

As much as I love games, sometimes an answer is better for expediency...or anyone else following the thread...so yes, answer please.

Am I correct in assuming that you (bear) are implying they changed it to make it more hazy? I've never had the Charlatan, but it's also never popped up in this thread, really, so that was my guess.

That's more hazy than I've ever seen it. It's never been crystal clear, but prior to this I would have called it more of a "mildly unfiltered" appearance. I'll pick up a 4-pack today since I'm also curious about whether the taste has changed. I would generally call it more balanced (i.e. slightly malty) with a greater pine presence than most NE-style ales. Citrus notes are there, but it was never a juice bomb, and it was considerably thinner. Frankly, I like it more than most of the local NE-style beers I've had, so a shift toward that style is not necessarily a positive development in my eyes. That said, I'm willing to give it a chance.

That looks hazier than they ever got Juice Pants or Son of Juice to look ....

It actually looks very similar to the last batch of Juice Pants (can't speak for the latest batch of SoJ, although I've heard that's pretty hazy too).

It seems like Maplewood and Hop Butcher are investing pretty heavily in this "haze craze!"

Just my opinion, but they know that's one of their best shots at staying (or becoming) relevant. Our shelves are too crowded and most of their beer doesn't stand out compared to other offerings.

    Of course.

And it's nice to seem them keep brewing it, knowing people want it. So many other new breweries would instead move on to 7 different beers styles everyone else makes better, before they returned to what they're actually good at making.

From a business perspective its a great idea - latch on to the latest craze and give your smaller, less known brewery almost instant hype and notoriety in the beer world. The only downside is if you can't get the style down. I think Hop Butcher came out swinging and did a good job with Galaxy Bowl. Maplewood struggled, but perhaps they are getting it down now? Who knows. I haven bought any of the SoJ or Juice Pants recently because I was pretty let down with both and at the price point they just weren't worth it. I'll for sure try the hazier Charlatan, but I always thought Charlatan was a good beer and in cans, Id be picking it up occasionally anyway especially come summer.

Yup, I'm entirely in agreement. I think some of these guys jumped on board to see if it would get them some word of mouth, saw it did, and have continued to do what's working for them (which I think is fine, because):
I've brought this up before, but I wish more places (not all, just more) would do what the Alchemist has--come up with a few excellent beers, and master them. I don't need every brewery to do an IPA, DIPA, stout, BA stout, berliner weiss, lager, etc., etc.; I'd rather certain breweries get good at something specific, rather than throw darts at a wall of beer styles. If these guys work on perfecting their "hot" beers, that's a win for everyone; there's a reason The Alchemist basically kept the lights on for a while just on the strength of Heady Topper.
Yeah, I've bought a good amount of the NE stuff in the city, and the results have been pretty mixed. Luckily, I think the quality is improving overall (although I think HB caught lightning in a bottle with GB1, so let's see if they can get that back). I think Maplewood is definitely getting their process together, as is Hailstorm, as is Hubbard's Cave. It's too early to tell with Marz, but it seems like they came out swinging, so I'm optimistic.

And then obviously you've got Shaun at RAM who by most accounts is crushing it (I wouldn't know), and Transient, who is on the board with my favorite of these beers so far (JIL).

Charlatan is by no means a NE IPA. Juice Pants had a ton of sediment/ almost a sludge, that this does not have. That Charlatan looks more like the TG stuff that just hasn't been through filtration. Not filtering does not make something automatically a NE IPA. The December batch I had was very flavorful, maybe as potent as SoJ in the fruity hops, but as mentioned it has the piney hop bite as well as the carbonation that gives it a more traditional mouthfeel. I think the usual suspects in this thread are higher abv DIPA guys, so I wouldn't recommend Charlatan, but if you are a pale ale person, it is up there with the other Chicago can't go wrong, stand bys for pale ales.

I bet if I bottle a hazy bottle of piss and wrote "NE IPA" on it with a marker people would be chasing my car around to try and buy it.
