I picked this up on Friday, and first off, it is nice to have really fresh True Brit. It makes a big difference. It is a top notch example of the English IPA style. And the Black is excellent, KarlHungus

If I had an all around, go-to IPA it would be True Brit. On the other hand, my palate is almost absurdly at variance with the palate of today's Craft Beer hobbyists.

Elsewhere in this forum -it might even be found in a forum search- another user had mentioned that Horizon Red was now re-classified in recent years, following a recipe change (I want to think that it was someone on staff at the brewery, but I am most likely mistaken.) I enjoyed it the last time I tried it, but as I implied, my preference is for easier going ales and lagers.

A few years ago this beer did undergo a recipe change to go along with the labeling change. I believe there was a malt change along with the addition of dry hopping.

That sounds right from the best of my recollection. I didn't rush out to try it in 2009 (it seems like just yesterday!) but do recall it as the center of some rather warm exchanges on the forum.

Correct. Both True Brit and Horizon Red have had recipe changes in recent years.

Of the time are the key words. Summit's was the first hefe I ever had, and I didn't care for it for a long time. In fact, though, I give their hefe credit for me developing a taste for the style, now one of my top 10 favorite styles. I did taste it against some better hefes, and it was only okay. I suspect they'll have a new recipe closer to style. I think they know they'll need to compete against Fair State's and Schell's versions, both of which are very strong.

Ha, I actually tend to agree. Black IPA isn't a favorite of mine. If I want a porter, I'll get a porter. If I want an IPA I'll get an IPA. That said, though, Summit's version is pretty decent.

Schells, Tabernash, Sprecher and Capitial Hefe Weizen's were some of the best newer hefe's that were out there 15 to 20 years ago.

I am surprised by how much I like True Brit from this collection. My recollection was of a harsh beer, but the ones from the IPA Collection are earthy, floral, fruity, bready, well-balanced, very enjoyable treats with mild bittering from the hops in the middle and finish. Just what I need... another local beer from the regular line up to try to fit in to what I buy from time to time while still leaving room for seasonal and special releases and others I haven't tried yet! Thanks, Summit!

    :grinning:

Yeah, nothing like so-called supporters of craft beer bitching about all of the press that Summit supposedly received for introducing a new beer. Oh, that's right, it was Surly fanboy(s) whining about it. Funnily enough, one of them subsequently ended up working for Summit.

FWIW, here is my ranking of the 4 beers in this collection: (As with @Chaz, my preferences don't line up with most here, so ... )
    1. True Brit IPA
    2. India-Style Black IPA
    3. Sága
    4. Horizon Red IPA

    All were enjoyable, though.
