Well I had to google FOMO. You learn something new everyday on BA! For me, that is not the reason I will wait in a line. If its a beer I want and I have the time, then why not!

The "weeks at sea in warm climates" statement has me confused - which IPA's (or any other style, for that matter) brewed in the continental US spend weeks at sea?

And if you tell me Stone (or Ballast Point or any other California brewer) ships to my beer fridge in Minnesota via The Panama Canal and Mississippi River, I'm gonna be pissed.

Research the history of India Pale Ale.
My point was, the style originally was brewed to last (keep) for months on end. How that has progressed to "buy it today, drink it today" to the point that people will wait hours in the cold for it has me wondering. It was just an observation for discussion.

LOL. Good guess - I mean I am not sure what else he was getting at.

I see what you're getting at. It was a little misleading, as if that's what happens now.

Do you not check any dates on your bottles/cans? Not one?

If not, the store I frequent has several month old Sculpin you can pick up for the clean rate of $14 a 6 pack  Because that several month time span shouldn't matter, right? Especially since the trip from England to India took around 18 months back in the day.

I'd suppose if I was in the jungles of Burma and it was 110 degrees I'd inhale that shitty old ass IPA and ask for another. You know what you know, now you can get all kinds of stuff in varying degrees of freshness, fresh IPAs are still best. There's a few that stand up to some time, but most do not, and the only line for beer I'd stand in today would be at Hill Farmstead.

Ironically, OP, if everyone adopted your way of thinking there wouldn't be any lines.

And just a thought that if some brewery was able to recreate the original barreled and bretted IPA made with the malts and hops of the time I would probably wait on line to get some.

Yeah, for me, between the growler station and a wealth of choices for packaged product, I just let what's freshest be my guide when I buy IPAs. No need to go nuts.

...conditioned in the boiler room, too . I dunno, man, if it's that unique I'd consider being there right beside you. :sunglasses:

It helps that while you're "standing in line" at HF you have access to one of the world's greatest tap/bottle lists...

I get your point, I check dates and I agree, fresher is better. But, are beers really losing THAT much in a month or so ?

Oh yea. It's a drive for most people to begin with , ending with a drive on a gravel road. Everything they make is outstanding, and I drive 1200 miles round trip to do it, maybe again this June.

Depends on who you ask. Some folks would argue that some of the heavily dry hopped IPAs fall off quickly. Some folks say NE IPAs fall off quick. Others say all of them have about a two week to month long drinking window. Personally, I try to get my IPAs within 3 weeks of bottling. That's yielded some good results overall. If you're the one and done type, you won't be able to pick apart the taste differences in 3 day or 3 week old IPA anyway.

I agree straight up, lines are for nerds. I hate waiting on damn near anything. If I want to wait 4 hours to drink a beer, I'll go stand outside my local bar all morning til they open for lunch.

I wish people would stop making declarations about waiting in line. We don't care. Some of us find it fun, and no one is forcing us to do it. It's one less person in front of us, and one more person who we can trade-**** later. You're just pissed that you don't get any of it.

Good point, There is a brewery here in Maine that distributes to my local shop, I've had month old and that day Cannings just because I was in the right place at the right time. I didn't notice any difference, that's not to say someone else wouldn't. For me, I love that particular beer, but I can't wrap my head around not being able to wait until it comes around again, or running around people to get in line for it. To each their own.

This half-truth has been discussed ad nauseum here on BA. The short version is that the "original" IPA is not "our" IPA.
