Correct The IPA will be canned....they feel that IPA should never hit sunlight. Great idea!!!!!

I heard the same thing too - sunlight is more damaging to hop aromatics than temp. Hill Farmstead guys treat it the same way.

Stainless growlers are awesome. They absolutely do not keep the beer colder than glass, but they are lightweight and durable. And opaque. Someone in Portland was making growlers and cages to strap to bikes - awesome idea.

Now if only more breweries adopted the removable tag method, then we can use the SS growler everywhere.

Unfortunately stainless isn't magnetic so you'd have to attach some sort of magnet base to it. But I like the idea.

actually most SS is magnetic as it does have iron in it, just not as much as regular steel. Source: I work with magnets and magnetic material with my job.

Uhh, is that true? One of the products my company sells involves a huge magnet, very big and very strong. But it doesn't attract stainless screws (etc) at all.

Drinking a growler of Pupil my sister sent me...really good stuff...as if SoCal needs yet another awesome brewery. I'm jealous!

I was thinking more of just a paper tag or something. Ya know, one that can be used on glass and metal growlers.

depends on the SS grade. As an example, i droped a bunch of 2-56 nuts on the ground today while cleaning up the lab. It fell on a table with ABS (plastic) shavings, instead of picking through, I grabbed a N52 magnet and was able to grab all of the nuts. Also, attached to the side of our metal cage on our milling machine I have magents that hold tools, including SS machine fixtures and tools. However, because of our devices having magnets we have had to order specific SS grade parts (custom flat springs) that are non-magnetic.

The convenience of magnets would also be the problem. As I understand it, you could probably get away with using stick-on labels that are designed to permanently stick (not unlike the labels used on beer bottles); making things easily removable puts you at risk in the gray zone of that law.

all you guys and your counterpoints to my shitty idea. I just wanted a bunch of cheap magnets to line on my beer fridge. Of course, then probably people would be complaining about having too many magnets.

The lady at my house would much rather have magnets on the fridge than empty growlers above it.

Interesting. I wasn't actually involved with the design of this project at all, just the assembly, so I'm not sure what grade any of this stuff is. All I know is that it's a vacuum chamber made of stainless, with parts assembled with stainless hardware and the giant-ass magnet doesn't seem to mess with anything. (As opposed to the giant ass-magnet, which is a huge problem.)

On topic, that growler looks cool and I really wish CA weren't stupid and we could actually use those.

    Eh.

Most stainless steel is in fact not magnetic. And it is frequently the concentration of nickel, not iron, that is most responsible for this. And it's also not always a matter of relative value, it's often either/or.

I'll be on the gentle side and assume you actually know all this and were just trying to simplify and counter the common misperception that no stainless is magnetic. But assuredly, it can and indeed frequently is non-magnetic.

Should have read farther down. You're still extrapolating a ton from your personal experience.

Either way, a better first answer would have been: "it can be either!"

i think that the magnets would probably ruin the beer and pull the hops out
