I'm not even sure this qualifies as news at this point, but...

As was mentioned in a previous thread, Founders is in the process of entering the Portland market. In fact, I've already started to see various Founders stuff on tap around town this week. In any event, Belmont Station is having a Launch Party event next Tuesday (2/7/17, from 5-8 PM), and Bailey's is holding their release event the next day (Wednesday). No info on the Bailey's tap list, but according to their email, Belmont Station will have the following beers on tap:

    • All Day IPA - Session IPA
    • Lizard of Koz - Bourbon Barrel-aged Imp. Stout w/ Chocolate and Blueberries
    • Red's Rye IPA - IPA brewed with Rye
    • Nitro Oatmeal Stout
    • Backwoods Bastard - Bourbon Barrel-aged Scotch Ale
    • Frootwood - Bourbon Barrel-aged Cherry Ale
    • Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale

Thank goodness we will at last be taught what it is to have great beer up here.
    Eternally grateful.

I thought big-boy-brewery GRAPE LOTION finally taught what it is to have great beer up here?

I actually am just drinking a Bells Two Hearted Ale.
Very good,,,but still there are better up here. Maybe its just the freshness?

I was pretty underwhelmed by it, too. I think it's just that we're used to west coast style ipas and it's very different.

I hope General makes sure to dust the kegs off before they get tapped. Just kidding. Does anyone know how the freshness is on these Founders or for that matter Bell's beers have been. I'm a big fan of the centennial ipa, but I have a feeling they have been sitting in a warehouse waiting for a release date.

The Backwoods Bastard is infected, don't drink it. Put it back on the truck that is heading to Boise next ;-).

The abundant six packs of Centennial IPA which I saw earlier tonight at the Tanasbourne Whole Foods were bottled on 1/12/17. Sounds fresh to me. They also had plenty of Rubaeus and Porter, and a metric crap-ton of All-Day.

If I see any this weekend, I'll make sure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands.

The Bell's Hopslam/Two Hearted I've seen around town are very fresh (early Jan bottled on dates) while the Founders Azacca IPA I'm drinking now was canned Nov 2016. I also saw cans of Centennial and All Day IPA at ABV today (along with Dirty Bastard and Rubaeus).

Looking now..yeah my bottle of Two Hearted was packaged on 1/09/2017.
Like i said it was a good beer..but nothing close to what i can get from Oregon or Washington brewers.
But its old style like Rogue or Bridgeport and maybe to be expected?

Since we're talking about Bell's, I had a pour of Bell's Smoked Stout last weekend at Apex, and it was magnificent. A smoked beer for people who like smoked beer.

Just a heads up for anyone going to one of these. Lizard of Koz is SWEET. I'd heard before our release parties that it was sweet but brushed it off. No, it's like drinking soda fountain syrup.

Agreed, I had this over Christmas on the east coast and was really disappointed. It's like straight blueberry juice added to a bourbon stout.

Dyan. What are your thoughts of the hopslam out here? I've had it on tap, and also bought a 6 pack, and have mixed feelings about the beer. It's been good, but maybe my palate is just jaded since moving back out here. I haven't been wowed by the hopslam I've sampled so far, and am pretty sure I likely won't need to buy any more. I keep on finding myself comparing it to Hop Venom, and my feeling is that the Boneyard beer is clearly superior (and of course much easier to come by). Thoughts?

I wasn't impressed with Hop Slam this year. I also had it back in the day and I think I liked it but still wasn't wowed back then. It's overly malty and I can't detect the honey. At all.

    [shrug] no big deal.

Agreed, but I was a bit surprised by how unimpressed I was with this year's version. This is the first year I've had it out of the can for one thing, and it also had me wondering how much of it Bell's is now making (given that they appear to have sent a pretty fair amount out to Oregon this year, without reducing their distribution elsewhere, from what I can tell).

I've had it on tap as well this year, and didn't think it any better in that format either. Not a big deal, but I guess given how excited I was to see it available here in PDX at long last, I'm a bit disappointed.

Unfortunately, I have to agree. Hopslam in the past has always made me giddy. This year, i was taken aback by how sweet it seemed, and how the bitterness seemed to be lacking. It didn't seem to be the same beer that we drank on tap at Quotations or on cask at Rustico. Between the easily available Hop Venom and Sticky Hands, I don't think i'll be buying this in bulk anymore.

I see a tap house here in Salem has Founders Azacca IPA..i should be able to sample it along side a couple good Oregon/Washington ones.
