Just warning everyone now that they should probably just stay away from Tropicalia and Spirit Beast... real shelfies.

Also, I'll be there pretty much all day as well. The open at 10:00 am on Saturday.

Not to mention the collabs: Jolly Pumpkin/Monkish, Creature Comforts/Jester King, Creature Comforts/Arizona Wilderness, on top of all the Upland sours. I'd be all over that if I could.

Solid list. Don't pass up the FH Battle Axe if you haven't had it.

The only one I have had so far was the Wild Sage Saison and it was very good. Looking forward to trying some more

If I recall correctly, I think most are less. Usually around $8

I will be in Columbus this weekend. Is there anything special happening anywhere around town? Anything recently released I should look to pick up? Has the Andersons closed yet? Are they discounting their beer?

Good to hear, maybe we can get some up north now!

On a similar topic, there is a saturation thread in the beer talk forum, I can't help but notice this in ohio for ohio breweries too. I'm not a brewer, store owner or distributor, but I see a lot of platform, jackie o and columbus brewing sitting around on shelves. I am assume there is some factor I am not aware that keeps everyone profitable. I'm happy to have access to so many ohio beers, but fighting for shelf space has to suck.

    Anyway, good luck to madtree.

Having beer on the shelf is never a bad thing. Having old beer on the shelf is a bad thing.

That being said, I mostly agree with you. There is a lot of competition for shelf space with just Ohio brews.

MadTree said in a recent podcast that they plan to distribute to the rest of Ohio and all of Kentucky with their first stage of expansion in the new brewery, so I think you'll be seeing it there soon.

Depends. Some beers like the basic brett saisons are around 8-10 but I've also seen Crooked Stave sours run up to $20 a 375ml (going rate at several total wines I visited in SC for Silly Cybies).

Would have been a huge addition to OH years ago. Now pretty much just another brewery fighting for shelf space.

Hmm. Wonder if these are grey or above board.

I would love to answer your question but it doesn't make any sense.

He is asking how they got beer from breweries that don't distribute in Ohio....weather they traded kegs direct with the breweries or went through distributor.

I've wondered the same about big parties like DLD and Huna. How all those logistics work.

Stopped in yesterday to grab a beer and check out MadTree 2.0. It is an awesome facility. Pretty sure it's my new favorite place.

I was gonna say....anytime I ever saw Crooked Stave in other states the only "cheap" ($8 range) beers from them I saw were the basic ones, like the Saisons, Witbiers, etc. Anything barrel-aged or with fruit added was always $12+ easily, but usually over a $1 an ounce for sure. They do make some fantastic beer, but it's not cheap. Will be interesting to see how it sells here.

Just have to say, there's nothing basic about a true Saison, which I believe is what Crooked Stave is producing.

Most consumers in Ohio aren't very familiar with it because very few breweries we have access to make it, but nearly all well-made Farmhouse Ales / Saisons spend a good amount of time developing in oak barrels of some kind.

We're so used to bourbon around these parts that BA stouts seem to take over our thought process when the term "barrel aged" pops up, but in the greater scheme of things those are a relatively new development compared to other styles.

It also has to be reiterated, if referring to bourbon or rum barrel aging, most of the local bottles of the same size already on our shelves are $12.

Was answered in a cincy group - some kind of one-time distribution offer or something (cant remember specifics) - whether anybody really cares or whatever, their PR guy made a point to say it was all done legally.

Also answered in the Dayton Beer Geeks group.

I should know: I asked the question about the legality on there, because the thought of Tropicalia on a regular basis got me stiff as a board and I got my dreams dashed by that gentleman saying it was a one time deal :slight_frown:

I guess you didn't like my wording, but I chose it to differentiate between their higher priced beers and their lower priced beers and that's it. You're talking to someone that loves a good Saison and many Belgian-style beers and Crooked Stave makes some great ones (as I mentioned as well). That being said, I feel like their year round, Saison, Wit, etc. are COMPARATIVELY basic when they have Saisons, Sours, etc. that have spent years in different barrels, have various fruits added, blended with other beers, etc. That's all.

If most consumers in Ohio aren't familiar that would be odd considering how many great Farmhouse Ales/Saisons, Belgian beers in general that we have access to and there are some very good local examples as well.

Jackie O's barrel-aged beers are the only local example I think can think of that are priced like that and as I also stated, many Crooked Stave are above that price point making them expensive. Not that Jackie O's isn't expensive. Of course, I know you aren't fond of barrel-aged beers in general anyhow.
